Transport for Cairo is an ambitious project that seeks to map all formal and informal transportation in Cairo digitally, and release all data openly.
This Presentation is outdated as of April 2016.
2. 2
Transport for Cairo (TfC) was founded in 2015 with the mission and
primary focus of working towards a more sustainable transportation
system in Cairo. To further this mission, TfC directs its efforts to map all
formal and informal transportation in Cairo digitally, and release all data
openly.
Currently, TfC consists of 5 individuals, with backgrounds from urban
planning, business development, computer science and economics. TfC’s
purpose is to make the current public transportation sector in Cairo more
understandable for consumers in Egypt and professionals in urban
planning and development alike. Since its founding, TfC has released 1
dataset, and is on track to creating a research-consortium to attract grant
funding. It has collaborated with multiple stakeholders, including the
World Bank, JICA, 10 Tooba and more. Central to TfC’s philosophy is the
concept of openness.
Who are we?
3. 3
TfC will release its data in the open GTFS format.
This GTFS dataset will serve consumers in Egypt and professionals in
urban planning and development alike. Both have been hitherto faced
with a dire lack of information regarding public transportation in Cairo.
What do we do?
Routes
Schedules
Microbuses are notorious for jacking up fares arbitrarily,
particularly in out-of-ordinary situations such as National
Holidays or bad weather. Furthermore, consumers have
no way to accurately determine the cheapest way to
travel between any 2 given destinations.
Cairo has no system for creating or disseminating travel
alerts. Occasional Metro shutdowns cause devastation on
mobility within the city as commuters are surprised on
the spot. No information on alternative routes exists.
With the exception of the Cairo Metro, information on
public transportation in Cairo is not accessible. The Cairo
Traffic Authority does not publish its routes in printed or
digital form, maintain a transit map or street level info on
the bus system. The informal microbus system is completely
unstudied; no information or accurate data on it exists.
Fares
Travel Alerts
Relying on public transportation is a volatile experience,
as the timing of public buses is dependant on traffic
congestion. No public data exists on trip lengths,
frequency of operation on routes or service availability.
4. 4
GTFS was developed in 2005 as a collaboration between
TriMet & Google. It is a way to map public transit systems
in a language understood by software.
“I found it very frustrating to try and find transit directions in the
unfamiliar cities I was visiting. It was much easier at that time to get
driving directions from popular online mapping services, and I realized
this was probably encouraging car usage over public transit.”
- Bibiana McHugh, Creator of GTFS

What is GTFS?“General Transit Feed System”
6. 6
We make the ingredient (The GTFS data) and the users
cook the meal.
The GTFS data will be used by multiple stakeholders
The Tech Community will build Apps and websites for consumers
The Academic Community will research urban development and access
The Business Community will involve Public Transportation in planning
The Government will invest in the system more knowingly
Advocacy Groups will measure spatial inequality
Community Organisations will know how to get from A to B,
and share that knowledge to consumers
Who uses GTFS?“General Transit Feed System”
7. The Tech Community can use GTFS feeds to create many different
apps for consumers.
Local Apps currently do not utilise GTFS, and are of low quality.
Their installed base does not exceed 500 users each.

Promote GTFS usage
by the stakeholders
TfC will rely on a 4-Step Process to maximise the benefits of using GTFS.
First, we will create raw data by using existing sources where it exists,
and using mobile technology where it does not. We will then process
this raw data to conform with the GTFS format and publish it openly.
Finally, we will push adoption of the format amongst stakeholders.
How do we go about it?
