This document provides an abstract for a PhD research project that aims to develop a framework called TRANSLATION for sharing archaeological excavation data on the Semantic Web in a transparent way. The framework will allow data providers to publish their data using their own ontologies, while also enabling alignments to other domain ontologies. This will address issues that arise when different conceptual models are mapped to a single ontology, which can mask important conceptual differences. The research will involve developing the TRANSLATION software framework as a case study and evaluating the benefits of the proposed approach for semantic technologies.
