This document provides an abstract for a PhD research project that aims to develop a framework called TRANSLATION for sharing archaeological excavation data on the Semantic Web in a transparent way. The framework will allow data providers to publish their data using their own ontologies, while also enabling alignments between ontologies so that alternative meanings can be explored. The research will include a literature review on the Semantic Web and its use in cultural heritage and archaeology. It will also implement a case study using data on Roman ports in the Western Mediterranean to test the TRANSLATION framework.
