The document summarizes a dissertation on factors influencing the success of establishing native aquatic plants in North Carolina Piedmont reservoirs. It introduces three native plant species - water-willow, water shield, and vallisneria - that were established in two reservoirs. Macroinvertebrate and fish responses were then tracked. When I ask fellow developers what they think about empathy, the answer is often “not much”. However, I believe that the skill of empathy, being able to place yourself in another’s position, is crucial to designing, building and operating software at any scale. Join me for a whistle-stop tour of the benefits of empathy, which I learned from working on a large variety of software projects over the past ten years. I will share success stories and battle scars, and suggest practical techniques that you can harness in order to help your team develop empathy.

Unicorns are considered to be the rare person who can do both design and development. But, why are they considered rare? Because consider design and development to be separate disciplines.
In this talk, I explore the spectrum of design and development, how designers can be empowered by learning about development, and how developers can be empowered by learning about design.

In this talk, I explore the spectrum of design and development, how designers can be empowered by learning about development, and how developers can be empowered by learning about design.

So, this talk is about refocusing design on the people that we do it for: the users. Who are they in the first place? How do we learn more about them? What are user personas and how do we make them actionable?
