Trailer analysis 11-15
MITCHELL FROST
The intern
The initial zoom out creates a sense of irony as we would not expect an elderly man to be being spoken down to by a man
of such a young age and in casual clothing. The clothing of the young man who is clearly of a managerial status is a atypical
of such a professional who works behind the desk, therefore the director is clearly striving to challenge the typical
representation of people of such power; this adds a different aspect to the film which leaves the audience making constant
inferences throughout as nothing is too clear. The shot reverse shot between the young man and the elderly intern is used
in conjunction with the synchronous soundtrack in order to create humour and highlight the confusion of the intern. The
close up of Robert de Niro’s face allows for us to understand that he is clueless and feels out of his comfort zone. The prop
of the sunglasses which are worn inside by the lady manager are indicative that she is of importance. The black and white
graphic used for titles is representative of the contrast between the elderly and young within the film, just like there is a
contrast between the colours black and white. The constant high pitched, fast paced soundtrack suggest to the viewer that
the film will be full of action and fun throughout. The prop of the glasses of which the elderly intern wears suggest that he
is not as physically able as his younger colleagues and therefore less useful, although by doing this they have created a
negative representation of elderly people, I feel they challenge this by showing us the connection and capabilities of The
intern with technology and social skills. The high angled shot of the elderly man in conjunction with the young lady,
represent the younger woman as having more authority over the elderly man as she is in a greater position of power. The
trailer has inspired me to try and take on challenging typical conventions and representations of modern day films in order
to add a new aspect and provoke the arousal of questions within the audience, the editing such as the shot reverse shot
and the pull focus used within the trailer is inspirational and left me surprised at the outcome.

Fantastic four
The long shot of the children in the classroom represents them all as equal, the audience is able to relate to their school
years and reminisce on it. The mid shot of the children represents them as equal however on the other hand, the low angle
shot of the teacher represents her as powerful and indicates she has some power over the children. The low key lighting
alongside extreme close ups when the two boys are in the garage, shows that although they are children they are extremely
resourceful and pay close attention to detail. The spiritual, mystical soundtrack adds a tone of secrecy. The low key lighting
suggests that the children are hiding something. The over the shoulder shot of the young boy standing at the speech stand
represents the young boy as intelligent and confident, it is ironic as due to the higher level of the young boy to the teacher
and the fact the teachers back is towards us, means the teacher is diminished. Although we hear people laughing at the
young boy through diegetic dialogue, we understand that due to they boys confident attitude he is sure about what he says
and as a viewer we learn to trust him. The surreal location is what the viewers desire as they are able to escape the
problems of everyday life. Through the use of CGI, fire can be created adding lots of action to the scene, this makes the
trailer more intense and encourages the viewer to watch the full film. The large futuristic titles are typical of this genre and
the title, ‘from the makers of X-men’, really encourage the viewer to watch the film as they will more than likely be existing
fans of x-men and appreciate the directors work.

War pigs
From the heavy use of extreme close up shots of the soldiers we begin to empathise with them and as they camera is closer, we feel as if
we are personally closer and have a better understanding of the situation that they are in, meaning an urge to help them is produced. The
multiple layering of sounds I feel is incredibly effective at creating confusion and reconstructs a war ground as well as possible, like hell. I
wish to use different layers of sounds within my trailer in order to create effect and add to the action scenes especially. The silence we hear
as the soldier is shot in front of his face really draws in the effects of war on a personal level and allows for the audience to recognise how
much effect a bullet can have on someone. The silence after his friend is shot is representative of his emptiness inside, as he is without his
friend now. The blip is used in order to make the scene a lot more dramatic and believable, drawing the viewers attention away from the
man made nature of the film and trying to create the most realistic representation of war possible. The dark lighting would have been
typical of a war ground and also means we are unable to clearly see the soldiers faces suggesting that the war has stripped the soldiers of
their identity and they are now just all the same, soldiers. The prop of the glasses worn by the chief commander make it easily recognisable
as to who is who, there is a clear division between each group in the hierarchy and the clothing which is less suitable for war and clean
worn by the commander indicates that he holds the authority; therefore the blame is directed towards him if one of his soldiers is shot. The
extreme close up of the old black and white pictures give the trailer some contextual information and by also referring to old forms of
media in my trailer I hope to give the plot more of a backbone and believable history. The handheld action during the scenes of fighting
represent the confusion that the fight creates and means that the viewer is unable to fully identify what is going on, leading them to want
to watch the full film. The graphic codes used within help to fragment the trailer and break it into chunks, we are able to see the contrasting
highs and lows of the film, giving us a good enough insight. The heavy single drumming sound is used to indicate that something of
importance has come about, it creates suspense and the soundtrack alone compliments the film and the action in order to create meaning,
this I hope to also do with my trailer.

Insurgent
The high key lighting at the beginning of the trailer creates a futuristic feel which the director wishes to achieve. The establishing shot of
New York city is a typical shot to use as it holds connotations of money and action. Because location is so recognisable the audience
continues watching and is encouraged to watch the whole film. The shallow focus of the light box and the man hanging in the background
clearly highlights that there is a connection between the two and that the box is significant. The short snippets that the trailer is made up
of is mainly all action, fast paced shots, this is effective as we understand that the film is full of action, what the audience are wanting to
see. The violins and bass which increase in tempo through out the trailer builds tension and a climax and makes the trailer entertaining to
watch. We see that the characters are speaking however the soundtrack masks their voices, further encouraging the audience to watch
the full film and find out what they are saying; it is almost a tease. The slow motion is used to highlight some significant points of the film
and make it stand out. The continuous fade to blacks throughout the trailer mean that it is deliberately un revealing. Lots of CGI has been
used in order to create a film suitable for this futuristic theme, technology has clearly been made use of- innovative effects we have
never seen before, encouraging people to watch the full film. From my research of this trailer I have found that most of the trailer,
roughly 75% is made up of action scenes, I wish for my trailer to also include about this much action as I feel it is the best way to
encourage the viewer to watch the full film, the action packed trailer of insurgent means that the full three minutes are incredibly
exciting. The pleonastic sound of the punches thrown during the battle represent the characters almost as if they are not humans and a
lot more physically advanced. This fictional scenario of the humans being twice as strong as what they are in real life is what is made
interesting to the viewer. The match on action of the glass smashing to conclude the trailer makes it an interesting watch as it plays with
different dimensions and makes the most of new technologies. I also think it is good to make the most of new and current technologies
so I hope for my trailer to include lots of edited shots using premier pro cs6 and after effects in order to create meaning.

Star wars: the force awakens
The establishing wide shot alongside the slow pan, allows the audience to distinguish where we are and also shows the vastness of the
dessert. Because there are many other star wars films, the trailer sets out appeals to the already existing Star Wars fans who already
have a strong knowledge of the film and characters. The music is very futuristic sticking to the theme within and matching the
character types such as the robots. There are a lot of long duration fade to black transitions, allowing suspense to build and not reveal
too much. Due to the successful previous films, the director knows he does not need to reveal too much to gain a large audience on
the release as they are gagging to find out. Maybe the key to success is to reveal as little as possible with small snippets to build the
viewers excitement. The trailer makes use of lots of extreme close up shots in order to reveal as less as possible. Well known characters
such as Darth Vader and R2-D2 are shown in order to encourage people to watch the full film as people recognise these characters
from previous films. The trailer is jam-packed with action, this is overwhelming and means that the audience can not take all of it in,
therefore want to see the full film. The constant change in soundtrack and varied tempo of music is representative of the journey you
will endure while watching the film, I hope to use a range of sounds and music in order to represent a vastness and complexity about
both the film and trailer. I really like the effect of which the dip to black transitions create and would hope to use this in my trailer too
as I feel that it creates a sense of mystery and hints that there is more to come. The heavy use of CGI is effective at maintaining the
futuristic theme and although my film is the complete opposite to this, I hope to use typical conventions and signifiers in my trailer in
order to maintain themes. Key shots of key characters is what makes this trailer work, not much action is needed in order to excite the
audience for the main film as the viewer is left inferring what is to happen next. The contrast between the damsel in distress in the
tatty clothes, crying and the men who are dressed in costumes ready for combat, is atypical of what we expect to see in todays film, as
it is incorrect to view woman as unequal to men, as they are just as ready to fight.

  • 2. The intern The initial zoom out creates a sense of irony as we would not expect an elderly man to be being spoken down to by a man of such a young age and in casual clothing. The clothing of the young man who is clearly of a managerial status is a atypical of such a professional who works behind the desk, therefore the director is clearly striving to challenge the typical representation of people of such power; this adds a different aspect to the film which leaves the audience making constant inferences throughout as nothing is too clear. The shot reverse shot between the young man and the elderly intern is used in conjunction with the synchronous soundtrack in order to create humour and highlight the confusion of the intern. The close up of Robert de Niro’s face allows for us to understand that he is clueless and feels out of his comfort zone. The prop of the sunglasses which are worn inside by the lady manager are indicative that she is of importance. The black and white graphic used for titles is representative of the contrast between the elderly and young within the film, just like there is a contrast between the colours black and white. The constant high pitched, fast paced soundtrack suggest to the viewer that the film will be full of action and fun throughout. The prop of the glasses of which the elderly intern wears suggest that he is not as physically able as his younger colleagues and therefore less useful, although by doing this they have created a negative representation of elderly people, I feel they challenge this by showing us the connection and capabilities of The intern with technology and social skills. The high angled shot of the elderly man in conjunction with the young lady, represent the younger woman as having more authority over the elderly man as she is in a greater position of power. The trailer has inspired me to try and take on challenging typical conventions and representations of modern day films in order to add a new aspect and provoke the arousal of questions within the audience, the editing such as the shot reverse shot and the pull focus used within the trailer is inspirational and left me surprised at the outcome. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU3Xban0Y6A
  • 3. Fantastic four The long shot of the children in the classroom represents them all as equal, the audience is able to relate to their school years and reminisce on it. The mid shot of the children represents them as equal however on the other hand, the low angle shot of the teacher represents her as powerful and indicates she has some power over the children. The low key lighting alongside extreme close ups when the two boys are in the garage, shows that although they are children they are extremely resourceful and pay close attention to detail. The spiritual, mystical soundtrack adds a tone of secrecy. The low key lighting suggests that the children are hiding something. The over the shoulder shot of the young boy standing at the speech stand represents the young boy as intelligent and confident, it is ironic as due to the higher level of the young boy to the teacher and the fact the teachers back is towards us, means the teacher is diminished. Although we hear people laughing at the young boy through diegetic dialogue, we understand that due to they boys confident attitude he is sure about what he says and as a viewer we learn to trust him. The surreal location is what the viewers desire as they are able to escape the problems of everyday life. Through the use of CGI, fire can be created adding lots of action to the scene, this makes the trailer more intense and encourages the viewer to watch the full film. The large futuristic titles are typical of this genre and the title, ‘from the makers of X-men’, really encourage the viewer to watch the film as they will more than likely be existing fans of x-men and appreciate the directors work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-BVs-KCSiA
  • 4. War pigs From the heavy use of extreme close up shots of the soldiers we begin to empathise with them and as they camera is closer, we feel as if we are personally closer and have a better understanding of the situation that they are in, meaning an urge to help them is produced. The multiple layering of sounds I feel is incredibly effective at creating confusion and reconstructs a war ground as well as possible, like hell. I wish to use different layers of sounds within my trailer in order to create effect and add to the action scenes especially. The silence we hear as the soldier is shot in front of his face really draws in the effects of war on a personal level and allows for the audience to recognise how much effect a bullet can have on someone. The silence after his friend is shot is representative of his emptiness inside, as he is without his friend now. The blip is used in order to make the scene a lot more dramatic and believable, drawing the viewers attention away from the man made nature of the film and trying to create the most realistic representation of war possible. The dark lighting would have been typical of a war ground and also means we are unable to clearly see the soldiers faces suggesting that the war has stripped the soldiers of their identity and they are now just all the same, soldiers. The prop of the glasses worn by the chief commander make it easily recognisable as to who is who, there is a clear division between each group in the hierarchy and the clothing which is less suitable for war and clean worn by the commander indicates that he holds the authority; therefore the blame is directed towards him if one of his soldiers is shot. The extreme close up of the old black and white pictures give the trailer some contextual information and by also referring to old forms of media in my trailer I hope to give the plot more of a backbone and believable history. The handheld action during the scenes of fighting represent the confusion that the fight creates and means that the viewer is unable to fully identify what is going on, leading them to want to watch the full film. The graphic codes used within help to fragment the trailer and break it into chunks, we are able to see the contrasting highs and lows of the film, giving us a good enough insight. The heavy single drumming sound is used to indicate that something of importance has come about, it creates suspense and the soundtrack alone compliments the film and the action in order to create meaning, this I hope to also do with my trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVWxC4pYI_I
  • 5. Insurgent The high key lighting at the beginning of the trailer creates a futuristic feel which the director wishes to achieve. The establishing shot of New York city is a typical shot to use as it holds connotations of money and action. Because location is so recognisable the audience continues watching and is encouraged to watch the whole film. The shallow focus of the light box and the man hanging in the background clearly highlights that there is a connection between the two and that the box is significant. The short snippets that the trailer is made up of is mainly all action, fast paced shots, this is effective as we understand that the film is full of action, what the audience are wanting to see. The violins and bass which increase in tempo through out the trailer builds tension and a climax and makes the trailer entertaining to watch. We see that the characters are speaking however the soundtrack masks their voices, further encouraging the audience to watch the full film and find out what they are saying; it is almost a tease. The slow motion is used to highlight some significant points of the film and make it stand out. The continuous fade to blacks throughout the trailer mean that it is deliberately un revealing. Lots of CGI has been used in order to create a film suitable for this futuristic theme, technology has clearly been made use of- innovative effects we have never seen before, encouraging people to watch the full film. From my research of this trailer I have found that most of the trailer, roughly 75% is made up of action scenes, I wish for my trailer to also include about this much action as I feel it is the best way to encourage the viewer to watch the full film, the action packed trailer of insurgent means that the full three minutes are incredibly exciting. The pleonastic sound of the punches thrown during the battle represent the characters almost as if they are not humans and a lot more physically advanced. This fictional scenario of the humans being twice as strong as what they are in real life is what is made interesting to the viewer. The match on action of the glass smashing to conclude the trailer makes it an interesting watch as it plays with different dimensions and makes the most of new technologies. I also think it is good to make the most of new and current technologies so I hope for my trailer to include lots of edited shots using premier pro cs6 and after effects in order to create meaning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suZcGoRLXkU
  • 6. Star wars: the force awakens The establishing wide shot alongside the slow pan, allows the audience to distinguish where we are and also shows the vastness of the dessert. Because there are many other star wars films, the trailer sets out appeals to the already existing Star Wars fans who already have a strong knowledge of the film and characters. The music is very futuristic sticking to the theme within and matching the character types such as the robots. There are a lot of long duration fade to black transitions, allowing suspense to build and not reveal too much. Due to the successful previous films, the director knows he does not need to reveal too much to gain a large audience on the release as they are gagging to find out. Maybe the key to success is to reveal as little as possible with small snippets to build the viewers excitement. The trailer makes use of lots of extreme close up shots in order to reveal as less as possible. Well known characters such as Darth Vader and R2-D2 are shown in order to encourage people to watch the full film as people recognise these characters from previous films. The trailer is jam-packed with action, this is overwhelming and means that the audience can not take all of it in, therefore want to see the full film. The constant change in soundtrack and varied tempo of music is representative of the journey you will endure while watching the film, I hope to use a range of sounds and music in order to represent a vastness and complexity about both the film and trailer. I really like the effect of which the dip to black transitions create and would hope to use this in my trailer too as I feel that it creates a sense of mystery and hints that there is more to come. The heavy use of CGI is effective at maintaining the futuristic theme and although my film is the complete opposite to this, I hope to use typical conventions and signifiers in my trailer in order to maintain themes. Key shots of key characters is what makes this trailer work, not much action is needed in order to excite the audience for the main film as the viewer is left inferring what is to happen next. The contrast between the damsel in distress in the tatty clothes, crying and the men who are dressed in costumes ready for combat, is atypical of what we expect to see in todays film, as it is incorrect to view woman as unequal to men, as they are just as ready to fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngElkyQ6Rhs
