SOME INFORMATION ABOUT IT
The Tower of Hercules is a lighthouse tower and situated on a hill on the peninsula of the city
of La Coruna in Galicia. It has the privilege of being the only Roman lighthouse and the oldest
in operation in the world. It is the third lighthouse in Spain by its height.
HISTORY
• The Tower of Hercules was built by the Romans as a lighthouse in the first century.
• The tower lost possibly maritime use during the Middle Ages to become a fortress. It was
in the seventeenth century (1682) when the Duke of Uceda commissioned the
architectural restoration, in the reign of Charles III the complete reconstruction was
performed. Neoclassical work was completed in 1791.
• The current facade of the tower is the result of neoclassical remodeling carried out in the
eighteenth century. In 2007, she was elected a candidate to join the list of cultural goods
Heritage Site. September 9 2008se it twinned with the Statue of Liberty in New York and
the 25th of that month with the Faro del Morro in Havana, the oldest in America and one
of the emblems of Cuba.

• The Tower of Hercules was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site on June 27th, 2009 in
the city of Seville.
