Hello everyone. Welcome to our webinar on Totara LMS: LMS for Workplace Learning
Today’s webinar is sponsored by Lambda Solutions
Our presenters today, are Lori Davies, Technical Solutions Consultant from Totara, and myself, Arnet Tkachuk, Business Analyst from Lambda Solutions.
In today’s webinar we will
briefly introduce you to Lambda Solutions
talk to you about Totara LMS
and more specifically on the features that make Totara an ideal cost-effective workplace LMS for your organization
Lori will provide us with an high-level tour/demo of these features
we will also briefly talk about the positive impact Totara has your overall training budget
finally we’d like to show you what’s in store in the upcoming release of Totara.
- Lambda Solutions is a Moodle Partner as well as a Totara Solutions Partner. We have been working with Moodle since 2003.
- We continue to contribute to the Moodle community through our monthly HOW TO webinars.
- Our goal is to provide an affordable, open-source eLearning solution that deploys easily in both large and small organizations
- We offer services in and around Moodle and Totara, such as Managed Hosting, Application Support, and custom development and integration with other systems like HR and information management systems.
- We work with a growing number of schools, colleges, training institutions, healthcare facilities, small businesses, and nonprofits who want to offer Learning in the Cloud. We believe support is a critical component to any successful implementation.
These are just some of our clients in the healthcare, corporate, government, and academic organizations
A distribution is a ready-made extended version of a standard product with its own particular focus and vision.
- Totara is an LMS specifically focused on the requirements of corporate, industry and vocational training in contrast to a standard release of Moodle which is focused on learning management systems for the academic setting.
Many corporate eLearning tools can expensive, inflexible and almost impossible to keep current with emerging trends. The Totara Learning Management System is built on top of the Moodle core, meaning you really get the best of both worlds: the top open-source learning platform and a scalable, enterprise-level corporate learning tool.
- With over 300 thousand users world-wide in every industry and company size, Totara proves over and over again that it can stand up with the major player in the corporate eLearning space. I’m sure that if you like Moodle, you’ll love Totara.
- The best part of all of this is that you can implement Totara quickly and at a fraction of the cost of proprietary solutions.
Over 120 organizations are using Totara including,
Vodafone – A British multi-national telecommunications company
Tesco – The UK’s largest private sector employer
Michelin – The world’s largest tire manufacturer
BMI Healthcare – The UK’s number one private hospital group
Queensland Health – State healthcare provider in Australia
Totara is a Moodle distribution focused on corporate learning, the features of which are built upon the best practices learned from the needs of other organizations.
- While Moodle Covers the items you see in yellow on the screen, Totara takes this and really expands the functionality to deliver something truly unique for corporate environments
This is just a birds eye view of some of the features Totara offers to support corporate organizational learning. These features focus on three key domains for competency-based learning: hierarchies, user management, and accreditation.
Hierarchies are the fundamental building blocks for aligning an organization and its position framework with the required competencies and skill sets. Totara allows you to build custom frameworks that fit your organization.
In virtue of the frameworks that have been established in the hierarchies, users can then be managed into teams and “audiences”. By audience we mean site-wide groups that can be automatically assigned to courses or groups of courses or course programs.
Totara supports accreditation and compliance through badges or “digital artifacts of recognition” for courses or competencies achieved. Of course just like Moodle Totara is also able to issue PDF certificates for courses completed. For compliance purposes, especially for recurring or cyclic scheduled courses or programs Totara has a Program Management feature that allows you to establish repeatable cycles of course releases and notification.
Before we move into Lori’s demo of the features that make Totara an ideal workplace competency-based learning LMS, I just want to show you some of the front pages and themes that have been developed for Totara.
Our key features demo will cover the following:
The pyramid on the right represents how LMS in the past tend to cost more and dominated the training. There were hugely expensive and averaged ¼ of a million. When it came to course development, change control ect there was often no resources left
- It was more of a technology system. You had to be a technologist to work these systems.
Open source solutions cut training budgets up to 80% and left resources for content management and course creation
Now the new open source LMS systems are user friendly. Your trainers, HR managers can work of these systems.
There is also a lot of value in taking the administration of the LMS out of the hands of technologists and placing it into the hands of trainers who actually specialize in learning. The quality of content and instruction goes up, and meaningful collaboration becomes a natural byproduct of project managing the LMS.
Open Source provides flexibility in design, and facilitates customization and integration with other systems.
The fact that Totara is License free makes it affordable to serve very large communities and to maintain multiple internal and external Learning Portals
