0:00 Class, welcome to Unit V, strategic planning. This is Dr. Peter Trzop and 0:05 I wanted to go over a few concepts with you in the class here. Looking at strategic planning, a 0:11 lot of people use the SWOT assessment, the strengths, weakness, opportunities, and 0:16 Threats, and that's a good starting point because it allows companies to look at 0:20 things from various perspectives: a little bit of environmental scanning, as 0:24 we've discussed, and they can look inside and outside the company. Having said 0:28 That, there are limits to it. 0:30 One being that there's a certain people on the committee and they may have their 0:34 limitations on knowledge, like what we call him imperfect knowledge, they may have bias and 0:39 Prejudice,, or just simply they just can't see certain things, or maybe they have 0:43 great insight. But typically, SWOTs are limited in that way, they give you a snapshot, a 0:48 little bit of an overview of the company or an organization. Having said that, there's 0:55 also strategic planning process which normally has, a commonly used one has, 0:59 five process steps. And I can review these very quickly. You can always look at the return of 1:06 Investment, which is typically very important, or at least the probability that it is 1:09 going to happen. If I invested this dollar, how much can I expect back, and in companies 1:15 typically rank those. If I get a dollar-for-dollar back here, that's better 1:19 than a $1.10 here, and then what's projected or say reliability and 1:24 probability of it. And that's important as well. Is it a risky investment? Is it safe 1:29 and stable? Analyze performance of management and board with an alignment and 1:34 seeing how board members in the company can actually implement the process, or 1:40 actually get through the planning. Re‐examines traditional views on change management, in particular the resistance to change, and to suggest alternative views and a practical approach for better managing change. The literature on change management contains numerous prerequisites for successful change, with a predominantly negative view on the issue of resistance to change. Some authors have argued for the positive utility of resistance, but have lamented a lack of management theories which support this view. Describes a management methodology called the theory of constraints (TOC) which views resistance as a necessary and positive force, and we demonstrate how it was applied in a case study involving a bank merger. Reviews how TOC handles the various types of resistance identified in the change management literature, and posit that the TOC framework helps lead and manage change by providing practical guidance on, inter alia, situational assessment, assumption surfacing, conflict resolution, planning and implementation of successful change

Organizations can be viewed as systems in which management creates the architecture for the system of production. Managers' role in organizational design is central but must be understood in the context of their overall responsibilities within the organization. Management operates through functions such as planning, organizing, staffing, leading/directing, controlling/monitoring, and reporting. These functions enable management to create strategies and compile resources to lead operations and monitor outputs. The concept of management has acquired special significance in the present competitive and complex market oriented world. Efficient and purposeful management is absolutely essential for the survival of any organization. Management concept is comprehensive and covers all aspects of business. In simple words, management means utilizing available resources in the best possible manner and also for achieving well defined objectives. It is a distinct and dynamic process involving use of different resources for achieving well defined objectives. The resources are: men, money, materials, machines, methods and markets. These are the six basic inputs in management process (six M's of management) and the output is in the form of achievement of objectives. It is the end result of inputs and is available through efficient management process. In the book entitled “Fifty Management Techniques” author Michael Ward had suggested different management techniques for managing strategy, operating, decision, marketing, pricing, finance, people and learning for successful accomplishment of goals and objective of the organization and this seminar is based on the same book. These techniques are not only useful for any profit oriented private organization but also beneficial for public sector organization like public extension system.

Those ranked low in the hierarchy require to be fulfilled before the ones at the top can be attained. These needs, as presented by Maslow's hierarchy of needs are psychological needs, safety needs, belongingness and love needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization. These needs need to be fulfilled as up climbs up the hierarchy. An employee needs to be satisfied psychologically and guaranteed with safety for him or her to be able to self-actualize and perform well in an organization. These needs need to be fulfilled as up climbs up the hierarchy.
