The Torments of the Grave

The doctrine that drives thousands of Muslims to despair.

The following account represents Sunni Islam’s standard teachings
of after-death experiences.

As the pallbearers carry the body to the grave, its soul follows behind crying, “Woe
to me! where are they taking me?”

Bukhari (arabic) # 1253 ‫صحيح البخارى‬

‫كان النبي صلى ال عليه وسلم يقول إذا وضعت الجنازة فاحتملها الرجال على أعناقهم فإن كانت صالحة قالت‬
‫قدموني وإن كانت غير صالحة قالت لهلها يا ويلها أين يذهبون بها يسمع صوتها كل شيء إل النسان ولو سمع‬
‫النسان لصعق‬

Bukhari :: Book 2 :: Volume 23 :: Hadith 400

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri :
Allah's Apostle said, When the funeral is ready and the men carry it on their
shoulders, if the deceased was righteous it will say, 'Present me (hurriedly),' and if
he was not righteous, it will say, 'Woe to it (me)! Where are they taking it (me)?' Its
voice is heard by everything except man and if he heard it he would fall
unconscious."

The grave speaks and says: "I am the house of dust; I am the house of worms."

Sunan al Tirmidhi (arabic) # 2460 ‫سنن الترمذي‬

‫فإنه لم يأت على القبر يوم إل تكلم فيه فيقول أنا بيت الغربة وأنا بيت الوحدة وأنا بيت التراب وأنا بيت الدود‬

Translation:

The grave speaks and says: “I am the house of strangeness; I am the house of
loneliness; I am the house of dust; I am the house of worms.”

Then, the soul returns to the corpse while it is interred.

Musnad Ahmad (arabic) # 18063 ‫مسند أحمد‬

‫فتعاد روحه في جسده ويأتيه ملكان فيجلسانه فيقولن له من ربك فيقول هاه هاه ل أدري فيقولن له ما دينك فيقول‬
‫هاه هاه ل أدري‬


Translation:

Then, his soul is returned back to his body...

Physical Sensations!

After being laid to rest by the gravediggers, the dead “hear” the gravediggers as
they walk away.


‫عن النبي صلى ال عليه وسلم قال العبد إذا وضع في قبره وتولي وذهب أصحابه حتى إنه ليسمع قرع نعالهم أتاه‬
‫ملكان فأقعداه فيقولن له‬



Narrated Anas:
The Prophet said, "When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions
return and he even hears their foot steps, two angels come to him and make him sit
and ask him..

Then two angels sit him up and ask him: “Who is your lord, what is your religion,
who is your prophet?”


‫ويأتيه ملكان فيجلسانه فيقولن له من ربك فيقول هاه هاه ل أدري فيقولن له ما دينك فيقول هاه هاه ل أدري‬
‫فيقولن له ما هذا الرجل الذي بعث فيكم فيقول هاه هاه ل أدري فينادي مناد من السماء‬


Translation:

Two angels come to him, sit him up and say to him who is your lord? he answers uh,
uh.. I don't know. They say what is your religion? he answers uh, uh.. I don't know.
They say who is this man that has been sent unto you? he answers uh, uh.. I don't
know.

While these questions appear deceptively easy to answer, and thus even the most
nominal Muslim should be able to pass this ghoulish inquisition unscathed, the
reason Muslims fear failing the test may be associated with Islam’s infamous
fatalism: "Allah does what He pleases." Qur'an 14:27

Qur'an 14:27 - 27 ‫سورة إبراهيم‬

ُ‫ ِ اَ ِ اَ اوُ ِ ُّ ُّ َّ ِ ِ اَ اَ اَ اَيْ اَ اوُ ُّ اَ اَ اَ او‬
‫يثب اوُ ال الذين آمنوا بالقول الثابت في الحياة الدنيا وفي الخرة ويضل ال الظالمين ويفعل ال ما يشاء‬
ِ َ‫اوُ اَ تِّت ُّ َّ ِ اَ اَ اوُ اَيْ ِ اَيْ اَ اَيْ ِ َّ ِ ِ ِ اَيْ اَ اَ ِ ُّ اَيْ اَ ا‬

Qur'an 14:27

Allah confirms those who believe with the sure word in this world's life and in the
hereafter, and Allah causes the unjust to go astray, and Allah does what He pleases.


Muslim scholars have interpreted this verse as revolving around the angels’ interrogation
and the ability of the dead — or rather, Allah’s desire for them — to answer right or
wrong. If he answers Allah, Islam, and Muhammad, respectively, he is granted paradise.
If not, the torments begin.

First, his body will be pulverized with a "massive iron hammer"

This hammer is such that "if a mountain was struck by it, the mountain would
crumble into dust."
The dead is struck such a blow that he crumbles into dust. But Allah reassembles him.

Abi Dawud (arabic) # 4753 ‫سنن أبى داود‬

‫ثم يقيض له أعمى أبكم معه مرزبة من حديد لو ضرب بها جبل لصار ترابا قال فيضربه بها ضربة يسمعها ما بين‬
‫المشرق والمغرب إل الثقلين فيصير ترابا قال ثم تعاد فيه الروح‬


Dawud :: Book 40 : Hadith 4735

Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib:
One who is blind and dumb will then be placed in charge of him, having a sledge-
hammer such that if a mountain were struck with it, it would become dust. He will
give him a blow with it which will be heard by everything between the east and the
west except by men and jinn, and he will become dust. Then his spirit will be
restored to him.

Next, the grave is said to "tighten" around the corpse, till its bones pop and crack.

Abi Dawud (arabic) # 4753 ‫سنن أبى داود‬

‫قال ويضيق عليه قبره حتى تختلف فيه أضلعه‬


Dawud :: Book 40 : Hadith 4735

.. and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together.

Then comes the turn of the Tomb-Snake
known as al-shaja' al-aqra' (roughly translated as the “bald brave one”)

Designed by Allah to torment the dead, this snake "eats his (the dead's) flesh, from head
to toe; then his flesh returns, and it (the snake) eats his flesh from toe to head, and so on."

Al-Musannaf (arabic) v.8 # 15 - 15 # 8.‫المصنف ج‬

‫سمعت عائشة تقول : يسلط على الكافر في قبره شجاع أقرع فيأكل لحمه من رأسه إلى رجليه ، ثم يكسى اللحم‬
‫. فيأكل من رجليه إلى رأسه ، ثم يكسى اللحم فيأكل من رأسه إلى رجليه فهو كذلك‬

Translation:

I heard Aisha say: The bald brave one is sent to the infidel in his grave. It eats his
flesh, from head to feet; then his flesh returns, and it eats his flesh from feet to
head, and so on.

Seventy Dragons will maul and mull upon him.

If one of them were to blow upon the earth, the earth would fail and wither away.


‫قال ويقيض ال له سبعين تنينا لو أن واحدا منها نفخ في الرض ما أنبتت شيئا ما بقيت الدنيا فينهشنه ويخدشنه‬
‫حتى يفضى به إلى الحساب‬


Translation:

Muhammad said: Allah shall set upon him 70 dragons, such that if one of them were
to blow upon the earth, the earth would fail and wither away. They will rend and
tear, maul and mull upon him until the day of reckoning.

Don't Soil Yourself or Else!


‫مر النبي صلى ال عليه وسلم بقبرين فقال إنهما ليعذبان وما يعذبان في كبير أما أحدهما فكان ل يستتر من البول‬
‫وأما الخر فكان يمشي بالنميمة‬

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
The Prophet once passed by two graves and said, "These two persons are being
tortured not for a major sin (to avoid). One of them never saved himself from being
soiled with his urine, while the other used to go about with calumnies(to make
enmity between friends)."

3 ways to evade the Torments of the Grave:

1- To die on Friday.


‫عن النبي صلى ال عليه وسلم قال ما من مسلم يموت يوم الجمعة أو ليلة الجمعة إل وقاه ال فتنة القبر‬


Translation:

Muslims who happen to die on Friday or on Friday eve are exonerated, by Allah,
from the fitna (torments) of the grave.

Why? because Muhammad said so.

2- To die from stomach aches.


‫كان سليمان بن صرد وخالد بن عرفطة قاعدين قال فذكر أن رجل مات بالبطن فقال أحدهما لصاحبه أما سمعت أوما‬
‫بلغك أن رسول ال صلى ال عليه وسلم قال من قتله بطنه فلن يعذب في قبره قال الخر بلى‬


Translation:

Muhammad said: He who dies from stomach aches will not be tormented in his
grave.

Why? because a seventh century bedouin said so.

3- To die as a martyr.

Qur'an 9:111 -111 ‫سورة التوبة‬

َ‫ ِ َّ َّ اَيْ اَ اَ ِ اَ اَيْ اوُ اَيْ ِ ِ اَ اَ اوُ اَ اوُ اَيْ اَ اَ اَيْ اَ اَ اوُ ِ اَ َّ اَ اوُ اوُ اَ َّ اَ اوُ اَ ِاوُ اَ ِ اَ ِ ِ تِّ اَ اَ اَيْ اوُاوُ اَ اَ اوُ اَيْ اَاوُ ا‬
‫إن ال اشتر ى من المؤمنين أنفسهم وأموالهم بأن لهم الجنة يقاتلون في سبيل ال فيقتلون ويقتلون‬


Qur'an 9:111

Verily, Allâh has purchased of the believers their lives and their properties; for the
price that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allâh's Cause, so they kill
(others) and are killed.



‫قال رسول ال صلى ال عليه وسلم للشهيد عند ال ست خصال يغفر له في أول دفعة وير ى مقعده من الجنة ويجار‬
‫من عذاب القبر ويأمن من الفزع الكبر ويوضع على رأسه تاج الوقار الياقوتة منها خير من الدنيا وما فيها‬


Translation:

Muhammad said: The martyr.. sees his throne in paradise and will not know the
torments of the grave.

Why? Don't ask!

Qur'an 5:101 -101 ‫سورة المائدة‬

ْ‫ اَ اَ ُّ اَ َّ ِ اَ اَ اوُ اَيْ اَ اَ اَيْ اَاوُ اَيْ اَ اَيْ اَ اَيْ اَ ِ اوُ اَيْ اَ اَ اوُ اَيْ اَ اوُ اَيْ اوُ اَي‬
‫يا أيها الذين آمنوا ل تسألوا عن أشياء إن تبد لكم تسؤكم‬


Qur'an 5:101

O you who believe! Ask not about things which, if made plain to you, may cause you
trouble.


Believe it or Else...

MUSLIMS,
