Case Study of Donna Little - Chapter 5
Donna Little is a 39-year-old Indian woman who has a history of substance misuse and has struggled with reunification with her adolescent children over the last 6 years. She was in residential school from the age of 6 to 16 years old. She has a history of domestic violence in her previous relationships. Donna was the youngest of four children in her family. Her parents, siblings, and herself were raised in the same small northern reservation. Both her parents had gone to residential school in the early 1950s, as did her grandfathers and grandmothers on both sides of her family system in the late 1910s. Donna was raised in an environment of violence and mayhem in her early childhood, which she has talked about quite extensively in counseling. Although her parents abused alcohol, she emphasizes repeatedly that her family was quite ceremonial and participated in the big drum feast and singing within the community. When Donna was 6, an Indian agent wearing a red, white, and black checkered jacket gave her candy and took her to the residential school. She never had the opportunity to say good-bye to her mom and dad, who died of tuberculosis while she was in the residential school. Donna reflects on her residential school experience with a despondent look. While in the residential school, she had only one friend she could count on. Her siblings, who were also at the school, were older and thus not allowed to play with her or sleep near her at the residence dorms. This created an incredible loneliness that Donna did not know how to fill, and often she would use alcohol to help numb that pain. She did not like to drink, but it helped her to stop her thinking badly about the past. Donna was a victim of sexual abuse in the residential school, primarily by the Roman Catholic priest who was in charge. The first time she was assaulted she was 7; the last assault occurred right before she ran away at age 16. When Donna had attempted to tell the head nun in charge of her dorm what was happening to her, she was beaten severely, to the point of unconsciousness. Donna recalls it was her friend, Sue, who nursed her back to health. Donna describes her life as difficult. She went home to her community, only to find a partner who turned out to be as violent toward her as her father was to her mother. She loves her children and cares for them deeply. She breast-fed her three children and still today can feel that connection to them. When her children were taken from her home after the last time her husband beat her, she spiraled out of control. In this chapter, we explore the antecedents and
early years of family therapy. There are two
compelling stories here: one of personalities,
one of ideas. The first story revolves around
the pioneers—visionary iconoclasts who broke
the mold of seeing life and its troubles as a
function of individuals and their personalities.
Make no mistake: The shift from an individual to
a systemic perspective was a revolutionary one,
providing those who grasped it with a powerful
tool for understanding and resolving human
problems.
The second story in the evolution of family
therapy is one of ideas. The restless curiosity of
the first family therapists led them to ingenious
new ways of conceptualizing the joys and
sorrows of family life.
As you read this history, stay open to surprises.
Be ready to reexamine easy assumptions—
including the assumption that family therapy
began as a benevolent effort to support the
institution of the family. The truth is, therapists
first encountered families as adversaries.
The undeclared War
Although we came to think of asylums as places of
cruelty and detention, they were originally built to
rescue the insane from being locked away in family
attics. Accordingly, except for purposes of footing
the bill, hospital psychiatrists kept families at arm’s
length. In the 1950s, however, two puzzling devel-
opments forced therapists to recognize the family’s
power to alter the course of treatment.
Therapists began to notice that often when a pa-
tient got better, someone else in the family got worse,
almost as though the family needed a symptomatic
member. As in the game of hide-and-seek, it didn’t
seem to matter who “It” was as long as someone
played the part. In one case, Don Jackson (1954)
was treating a woman for depression. When she be-
gan to improve, her husband complained that she was

getting worse. When she continued to improve, the
husband lost his job. Eventually, when the woman
was completely well, the husband killed himself. Ap-
parently this man’s stability was predicated on having
a sick wife.
Another strange story of shifting disturbance was
that patients often improved in the hospital only to get
worse when they went home.

She states that she is very angry with him about this behavior, although she believes that this was an isolated incident.
When discovering that she was aware of the affair Joe also became physically violent with Anna, but she states that this was an isolated incident as well.
Anna’s goal for seeking counseling was to learn how to control her anger toward her husband and gain coping skills for the situation.
She desires to learn how to forgive him for his past actions and learn how to submit to him.
On her intake papers Anna describes herself as a ‘kind, loving, affectionate, meek shy and blessed’ person’; her husband believes she has low self-esteem and little confidence.
Currently Anna is on Oxyeontin for pain management; Flexoral for muscle spasms and Relafen for arthritis.
She currently suffers from Fibromyalgia and Osteo-arthritis.
The client indicated prior counseling at SMH in 89-90 for Anorexia; she also has a brief history of lesbian behavior.
On the phone, as well as during our initial meeting Anna presented as a very chaotic and angry person.

The Case of Angela
Angela is a 27-year-old, Caucasian female, who first came to
counseling to address her history of sexual abuse. She graduated
from college with a BS in chemistry and has since been employed
by pharmaceutical companies. After obtaining a new job, she relo-
cated to an apartment in an East Coast city where she knew no
one. Both of Angela’s parents live on the West Coast, and she has
one younger brother who also lives in a different state. Angela has
limited contact with both her mother and brother and does not
have any contact with her father. Angela is obese and disclosed
a history of struggling with her weight and eating issues. She has
few friends, and those she does have live far away.
Angela has a long history of trauma in her life. She was sexually
abused between the ages of 9 and 21 by her father, sexually assaulted
at the age of 14 by a classmate in school, and mugged as a young
adult. There was domestic violence in the home, also perpetrated by
her father. Angela’s father is considered an upstanding member of
the community, and he is well liked and respected by others. No one
in Angela’s family believes that she was sexually abused, and her
father joined a “false memory syndrome” group and is outspoken
about that issue. There has been little discussion in her family about
what took place in the home while she was growing up.
Angela struggled with daily functioning and exhibited symp-
toms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She had a history
of cutting herself and binge eating and displayed some charac-
teristics of borderline personality disorder. Angela also mildly
dissociated when under duress. Angela suffered from depression
and anxiety and had trouble establishing new relationships, both
socially and at work. Although Angela has a stable job and was
able to complete her work each day, at times she became over-
whelmed by her emotions and retreated to the bathroom where
she cried and sometimes cut herself before returning to her work-
station. Angela relied on writing, artwork, and her cat for solace

and comfort. She was also very active outdoors, often hiking,
biking, and going on camping trips by herself. Her goals in life
were to own her own home, lose weight, enjoy relationships with
others, and find peace with her traumas.
As a result of the abuse she experienced, it was necessary to
begin treatment focusing heavily on establishing trust and a rela-
tionship with the client. After 1 year of therapy, deeper process
work was being done around her traumas, and she was able to
open up much more. She disclosed more painful experiences to
the therapist and began expressing her feelings, including intense
anger at her family members.
Angela also joined a group for survivors of sexual violence in
the same program where she was receiving individual therapy. .

The Case of Carol and Joseph
Carol is a 23-year-old, heterosexual, Caucasian female and the
mother of a 1-year-old baby girl. She is currently unemployed,
having previously worked for a house cleaning company. The
baby is healthy and developmentally on target, and she and the
parents appear to be well bonded with one another. Carol lives in
a rented house with her husband, Joseph. Joseph is a 27-year-old,
heterosexual, Hispanic male. He was recently arrested at their
home for a drug deal, which he asserts was a setup. Both parents
were charged with child endangerment because weapons were
found in the child’s crib and drugs were found in the home. The
parents assert that the child never sleeps in the crib but in their
bed. As a result of the parents’ arrest, social services was notified,
and the child was temporarily placed in a kinship care arrangement
with the maternal grandmother, who resides nearby. As a
result of Joseph’s arrest, he was fired from the cleaning company
where he worked, and the family is now experiencing financial
difficulties.
After initial contact was made with the parents, a number of
concerns were noted and the family was recommended for additional
case management. Carol’s mother indicated that she had
concerns about Carol’s drinking habits and stated that Carol’s
father and grandfather were alcoholics. She and the father separated
when Carol was a baby, and Carol has had only limited
contact with him. There appears to be significant tension between
the grandmother and Carol and Joseph. I addressed the alcohol
issue with both parents, who denied there was a problem, but
shortly after the discussion, Carol was involved in a serious car
accident with the baby in the car. She was determined to have been
under the influence of alcohol. I advised Carol that she could not
have any unsupervised contact with her child until she completed
intensive inpatient substance abuse treatment. I made arrangements
for her placement, but after a week, she was discharged
for noncompliance with the rules. She was then referred to an
intensive outpatient program and began therapy there. Initially
her attendance was erratic because she had lost her license as a
result of the DUI. Eventually, however, she became engaged in the
program and began to address her issues. She acknowledged that
she had started using drugs at a very young age but said that she
had only begun drinking in the previous year or so. We discussed
the genetics of her family, and she said that she realized that she
had deteriorated rapidly since beginning to drink and knew that
she simply could not drink alcohol.
Joseph’s mother is deceased, and his father travels extensively
in his job and is not available as a support. Joseph was
very devoted to his mother and was devastated by her premature
death. We discussed the strengths that he and Carol demonstrated
in staying together and working out their p.

How can it be that a seemingly depressed person, one who shows clinical symptoms, doesn’t respond to antidepressants or psychotherapy? Perhaps because the root of his anguish is something else.
Several years ago a patient named Brian was referred to me. He had suffered for years from an intractable depression for which he had been hospitalized. He had been through cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, supportive therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy. He had tried several medication “cocktails,” each with a litany of side effects that made them virtually intolerable. They had been ineffective anyway. The next step was electroshock therapy, which Brian did not want.
When he first came to see me, Brian was practically in a comatose state. He could barely bring himself to speak, and his voice, when I managed to get anything out of him, was meek. His body was rigid, his facial expression blank. He couldn’t look me in the eye. Yes, he seemed extremely depressed. But knowing he had been treated for depression for years without good results, I wondered about the diagnosis.
Even though we were together in my office, I was struck by a strong sense that Brian was elsewhere. I asked him what percentage of him was with me in the room.
“Maybe 25 percent,” he said.
“Where is the rest of you?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” he said, “but someplace where it is dark and I am alone.”
“Would you like me to help you get you a little more relaxed?” I asked.
He looked a bit surprised but said yes, so I grabbed a small cushion off my sofa and tossed it to him. He caught it and smiled.
“Toss it back,” I playfully commanded. And he did. His body loosened perceptibly and we talked some more. When I asked, after several minutes of tossing the cushion back and forth, what percentage of him was now with me, he responded with another smile. “I am all here now,” he said.
That’s how it went for several months: We played catch while we talked. Playing catch got him moving, relaxed him, established a connection between us — and was fun.
During our initial sessions I developed a sense of what it was like to grow up in Brian’s home. Based on what he told me, I decided to treat him as a survivor of childhood neglect — a form of trauma. Even when two parents live under the same roof and provide the basics of care like food, shelter and physical safety, as Brian’s parents had, the child can be neglected if the parents do not bond emotionally with him.
This I suspected was the case with Brian. He told me that his parents were both “preoccupied” with the heavy burdens of a famil.

Case Study of Donna Little - Chapter 5
Donna Little is a 39-year-old Indian woman who has a history of substance misuse and has struggled with reunification with her adolescent children over the last 6 years. She was in residential school from the age of 6 to 16 years old. She has a history of domestic violence in her previous relationships. Donna was the youngest of four children in her family. Her parents, siblings, and herself were raised in the same small northern reservation. Both her parents had gone to residential school in the early 1950s, as did her grandfathers and grandmothers on both sides of her family system in the late 1910s. Donna was raised in an environment of violence and mayhem in her early childhood, which she has talked about quite extensively in counseling. Although her parents abused alcohol, she emphasizes repeatedly that her family was quite ceremonial and participated in the big drum feast and singing within the community. When Donna was 6, an Indian agent wearing a red, white, and black checkered jacket gave her candy and took her to the residential school. She never had the opportunity to say good-bye to her mom and dad, who died of tuberculosis while she was in the residential school. Donna reflects on her residential school experience with a despondent look. While in the residential school, she had only one friend she could count on. Her siblings, who were also at the school, were older and thus not allowed to play with her or sleep near her at the residence dorms. This created an incredible loneliness that Donna did not know how to fill, and often she would use alcohol to help numb that pain. She did not like to drink, but it helped her to stop her thinking badly about the past. Donna was a victim of sexual abuse in the residential school, primarily by the Roman Catholic priest who was in charge. The first time she was assaulted she was 7; the last assault occurred right before she ran away at age 16. When Donna had attempted to tell the head nun in charge of her dorm what was happening to her, she was beaten severely, to the point of unconsciousness. Donna recalls it was her friend, Sue, who nursed her back to health. Donna describes her life as difficult. She went home to her community, only to find a partner who turned out to be as violent toward her as her father was to her mother. She loves her children and cares for them deeply. She breast-fed her three children and still today can feel that connection to them. When her children were taken from her home after the last time her husband beat her, she spiraled out of control. Donna has had long periods of abstinence, has a home in her community that is well cared for, and now has a partner who loves her deeply. In this chapter, we explore the antecedents and
early years of family therapy. There are two
compelling stories here: one of personalities,
one of ideas. The first story revolves around
the pioneers—visionary iconoclasts who broke
the mold of seeing life and its troubles as a
function of individuals and their personalities.
Make no mistake: The shift from an individual to
a systemic perspective was a revolutionary one,
providing those who grasped it with a powerful
tool for understanding and resolving human
problems.
The second story in the evolution of family
therapy is one of ideas. The restless curiosity of
the first family therapists led them to ingenious
new ways of conceptualizing the joys and
sorrows of family life.
As you read this history, stay open to surprises.
Be ready to reexamine easy assumptions—
including the assumption that family therapy
began as a benevolent effort to support the
institution of the family. The truth is, therapists
first encountered families as adversaries.
The undeclared War
Although we came to think of asylums as places of
cruelty and detention, they were originally built to
rescue the insane from being locked away in family
attics. Accordingly, except for purposes of footing
the bill, hospital psychiatrists kept families at arm’s
length. In the 1950s, however, two puzzling devel-
opments forced therapists to recognize the family’s
power to alter the course of treatment.
Therapists began to notice that often when a pa-
tient got better, someone else in the family got worse,
almost as though the family needed a symptomatic
member. As in the game of hide-and-seek, it didn’t
seem to matter who “It” was as long as someone
played the part. In one case, Don Jackson (1954)
was treating a woman for depression. When she be-
gan to improve, her husband complained that she was

getting worse. When she continued to improve, the
husband lost his job. Eventually, when the woman
was completely well, the husband killed himself. Ap-
parently this man’s stability was predicated on having
a sick wife.
Another strange story of shifting disturbance was
that patients often improved in the hospital only to get
worse when they went home.

She states this is the first she knew of his adulterous behavior, although she describes his long standing patterns of staying out all night, finding hickeys and following him to bars where he would leave with other women.
She states that she is very angry with him about this behavior, although she believes that this was an isolated incident.
When discovering that she was aware of the affair Joe also became physically violent with Anna, but she states that this was an isolated incident as well.
Anna’s goal for seeking counseling was to learn how to control her anger toward her husband and gain coping skills for the situation.
She desires to learn how to forgive him for his past actions and learn how to submit to him.
On her intake papers Anna describes herself as a ‘kind, loving, affectionate, meek shy and blessed’ person’; her husband believes she has low self-esteem and little confidence.
Currently Anna is on Oxyeontin for pain management; Flexoral for muscle spasms and Relafen for arthritis.
She currently suffers from Fibromyalgia and Osteo-arthritis.
The client indicated prior counseling at SMH in 89-90 for Anorexia; she also has a brief history of lesbian behavior.
On the phone, as well as during our initial meeting Anna presented as a very chaotic and angry person.
She arrived at the session approximately twenty minutes late after getting lost on the way – apologizing profusely when I went to greet her.
Once inside the office she asked if she could start the session with prayer, then got on her knees and touching her forehead to the ground and prayed for approximately five minutes, primarily asking the Lord to help her become a more submissive wife to her husband.

The Case of Angela
Angela is a 27-year-old, Caucasian female, who first came to
counseling to address her history of sexual abuse. She graduated
from college with a BS in chemistry and has since been employed
by pharmaceutical companies. After obtaining a new job, she relo-
cated to an apartment in an East Coast city where she knew no
one. Both of Angela’s parents live on the West Coast, and she has
one younger brother who also lives in a different state. Angela has
limited contact with both her mother and brother and does not
have any contact with her father. Angela is obese and disclosed
a history of struggling with her weight and eating issues. She has
few friends, and those she does have live far away.
Angela has a long history of trauma in her life. She was sexually
abused between the ages of 9 and 21 by her father, sexually assaulted
at the age of 14 by a classmate in school, and mugged as a young
adult. There was domestic violence in the home, also perpetrated by
her father. Angela’s father is considered an upstanding member of
the community, and he is well liked and respected by others. No one
in Angela’s family believes that she was sexually abused, and her
father joined a “false memory syndrome” group and is outspoken
about that issue. There has been little discussion in her family about
what took place in the home while she was growing up.
Angela struggled with daily functioning and exhibited symp-
toms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She had a history
of cutting herself and binge eating and displayed some charac-
teristics of borderline personality disorder. Angela also mildly
dissociated when under duress. Angela suffered from depression
and anxiety and had trouble establishing new relationships, both
socially and at work. Although Angela has a stable job and was
able to complete her work each day, at times she became over-
whelmed by her emotions and retreated to the bathroom where
she cried and sometimes cut herself before returning to her work-
station. Angela relied on writing, artwork, and her cat for solace

and comfort. She was also very active outdoors, often hiking,
biking, and going on camping trips by herself. Her goals in life
were to own her own home, lose weight, enjoy relationships with
others, and find peace with her traumas.
As a result of the abuse she experienced, it was necessary to
begin treatment focusing heavily on establishing trust and a rela-
tionship with the client. After 1 year of therapy, deeper process
work was being done around her traumas, and she was able to
open up much more. She disclosed more painful experiences to
the therapist and began expressing her feelings, including intense
anger at her family members.
Angela also joined a group for survivors of sexual violence in
the same program where she was receiving individual therapy. .

Working With Families:
The Case of Carol and Joseph
Carol is a 23-year-old, heterosexual, Caucasian female and the
mother of a 1-year-old baby girl. She is currently unemployed,
having previously worked for a house cleaning company. The
baby is healthy and developmentally on target, and she and the
parents appear to be well bonded with one another. Carol lives in
a rented house with her husband, Joseph. Joseph is a 27-year-old,
heterosexual, Hispanic male. He was recently arrested at their
home for a drug deal, which he asserts was a setup. Both parents
were charged with child endangerment because weapons were
found in the child’s crib and drugs were found in the home. The
parents assert that the child never sleeps in the crib but in their
bed. As a result of the parents’ arrest, social services was notified,
and the child was temporarily placed in a kinship care arrangement
with the maternal grandmother, who resides nearby. As a
result of Joseph’s arrest, he was fired from the cleaning company
where he worked, and the family is now experiencing financial
difficulties.
After initial contact was made with the parents, a number of
concerns were noted and the family was recommended for additional
case management. Carol’s mother indicated that she had
concerns about Carol’s drinking habits and stated that Carol’s
father and grandfather were alcoholics. She and the father separated
when Carol was a baby, and Carol has had only limited
contact with him. There appears to be significant tension between
the grandmother and Carol and Joseph. I addressed the alcohol
issue with both parents, who denied there was a problem, but
shortly after the discussion, Carol was involved in a serious car
accident with the baby in the car. She was determined to have been
under the influence of alcohol. I advised Carol that she could not
have any unsupervised contact with her child until she completed
intensive inpatient substance abuse treatment. I made arrangements
for her placement, but after a week, she was discharged
for noncompliance with the rules. She was then referred to an
intensive outpatient program and began therapy there. Initially
her attendance was erratic because she had lost her license as a
result of the DUI. Eventually, however, she became engaged in the
program and began to address her issues. She acknowledged that
she had started using drugs at a very young age but said that she
had only begun drinking in the previous year or so. We discussed
the genetics of her family, and she said that she realized that she
had deteriorated rapidly since beginning to drink and knew that
she simply could not drink alcohol.
Joseph’s mother is deceased, and his father travels extensively
in his job and is not available as a support. Joseph was
very devoted to his mother and was devastated by her premature
death. We discussed the strengths that he and Carol demonstrated
in staying together and working out their p.

How can it be that a seemingly depressed person, one who shows clinical symptoms, doesn’t respond to antidepressants or psychotherapy? Perhaps because the root of his anguish is something else.
Several years ago a patient named Brian was referred to me. He had suffered for years from an intractable depression for which he had been hospitalized. He had been through cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, supportive therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy. He had tried several medication “cocktails,” each with a litany of side effects that made them virtually intolerable. They had been ineffective anyway. The next step was electroshock therapy, which Brian did not want.
When he first came to see me, Brian was practically in a comatose state. He could barely bring himself to speak, and his voice, when I managed to get anything out of him, was meek. His body was rigid, his facial expression blank. He couldn’t look me in the eye. Yes, he seemed extremely depressed. But knowing he had been treated for depression for years without good results, I wondered about the diagnosis.
Even though we were together in my office, I was struck by a strong sense that Brian was elsewhere. I asked him what percentage of him was with me in the room.
“Maybe 25 percent,” he said.
“Where is the rest of you?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” he said, “but someplace where it is dark and I am alone.”
“Would you like me to help you get you a little more relaxed?” I asked.
He looked a bit surprised but said yes, so I grabbed a small cushion off my sofa and tossed it to him. He caught it and smiled.
“Toss it back,” I playfully commanded. And he did. His body loosened perceptibly and we talked some more. When I asked, after several minutes of tossing the cushion back and forth, what percentage of him was now with me, he responded with another smile. “I am all here now,” he said.
That’s how it went for several months: We played catch while we talked. Playing catch got him moving, relaxed him, established a connection between us — and was fun.
During our initial sessions I developed a sense of what it was like to grow up in Brian’s home. Based on what he told me, I decided to treat him as a survivor of childhood neglect — a form of trauma. Even when two parents live under the same roof and provide the basics of care like food, shelter and physical safety, as Brian’s parents had, the child can be neglected if the parents do not bond emotionally with him.
This I suspected was the case with Brian. He told me that his parents were both “preoccupied” with the heavy burdens of a famil.

When water is in a solid state, particles are packed in a rigid pattern, conforming to the shape of its container. As the water turns into a liquid, the particles regain their fluidity, moving as the other particles around them begin to shift. Kurt Lewin’s change theory is much like the changing state of water. Applying this theory, Lewin describes workplaces as being frozen in their procedures. In this state, it is impossible for change to occur successfully because people are “frozen.” Informaticists must recognize this rigid culture and begin to implement strategies that will unfreeze the opinions and procedures of the setting. According to Lewin, only then will staff begin to accept new processes over old ones.
This process of moving from “freezing” to “unfreezing” can be a turbulent one. In fact, many nurses have equated this to “working in slush.” By applying theories and frameworks developed by Lewin and others, nurse informaticists can better facilitate informatics implementations. When developing your paper, be attentive to answering these questions

How was the status of the individual under IL before 20th century? (exception to the rule?)
How is it currently?
Landmarks of the change?
Why the change?
How is the status of the individuals different when compared to the States, IOs, NGOs?
Prospects for the future?
Your opinion.
I expect each student to develop their answer using the textbook (or any other resource offered by the instructor). All sources used NEED TO BE REFERENCED PROPERLY. Failing to reference and cite is considered a grave mistake and will have work grade reduced significantly. Two points deduction for all source not properly cited, and works without references at all receive a zero (0). There is no specific format to be used in the referencing, student may choose the format, as long as it is academic. I just need the information of where you are getting your information. All information used taken from source NEED references (direct citations or indirect paraphrase:when you mention an author’s idea without citing it literally). All sources used need (Name of the author, page #, year) and quotation marks when it is a citation.
All work need a final bibliography as well. Two points deduction for works without final bibliography.

Healing can occur in two ways: Regeneration and Repair
There are 4 phases of wound healing: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. This document also describes the mechanism of wound healing. Factors that affect healing include infection, uncontrolled diabetes, poor nutrition, age, anemia, the presence of foreign bodies, etc.

Why can a sensitive Christian counselor not just automatically and quickly confront obvious sin in the life of the counselee? Of the cautions mentioned by the class sources, which ones do you think counselors most often overlook? Why? Now, consider the following case. What forms of confrontation do you think would work best in this scenario? Why did you answer as you did? Case Study: Jean (pseudonym) was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She reported having very little memory of her childhood. Her mother was severely depressed and, on several occasions throughout Jane’s early childhood, the mother spent several months at a time hospitalized for her depression. When her mother returned home, she would at times “lose control” and start beating on the children. Jean’s father left her mother when Jean was only three years old. Jean was eventually removed from the home and placed in foster care. She moved around from one foster care parent to another, and finally came to live with a pastor and his wife who raised her in a warm, loving family. Unfortunately, Jane started “looking for love in all the wrong places.” Jane became promiscuous and eventually got pregnant. This was a great disappointment to the pastor and his wife. Jane had been attending church regularly before the pregnancy and had made a profession of faith in Christ. She felt extremely guilty about the pregnancy. The pastor’s wife told Jean that she was extremely disappointed with her and that she was embarrassed to have her in her home. Not long thereafter, Jean secretly got an abortion. She then ran away with a young man to a hippie commune in California (during the late 60s). Jean is now 55 years old and has been in and out of counseling her entire life. Recently, she was referred for therapy following
