3. The Panchatantra is an ancient Indian collection of
inter-related animal fables in Sanskrit verse and
prose. The earliest recorded work, attributed
to Vishnu Sharma, dates to about 300 BCE. The
fables are likely much older, having been passed
down generations orally.
Author - It was the Indian Scholar named Vishnu
Sharma who wrote Panchatantra after King
Amarashakti asked him to educate his children and
impart good governing skills to them. Sharma took
this task and came up with the idea of teaching the
princes through storytelling.

4. The word “Panchatantra” is a combination of the
words Pancha – meaning five in Sanskrit, and
Tantra – meaning weave. Literally translated, it
means interweaving five skeins of traditions and
teachings into a text. The original text consists of
an introduction, followed by five parts or treatises.

5. The Western tradition of fable effectively begins with
Aesop, a likely legendary figure to whom is attributed a
collection of ancient Greek fables. Modern editions contain
up to 200 fables, but there is no way of tracing their actual
origins; the earliest known collection linked to Aesop dates
to the 4th century BC.
The Panchatantra is the most famous collection of Indian
fables. The oldest written versions are in Sanskrit and date
from early in the first millennium. The Panchatantra is a
collection of folktales and fables that were believed to have
been originally written in Sanskrit by Vishnu Sharma more
than 2500 years ago. This collection of stories features
animal characters which are stereotyped to associate
certain qualities with them.
