Create a system to trade breakouts by Steve Spencersmbcapital
SMB Training provides educational seminars and training courses on trading, both online and in-person. They are for educational purposes only and do not constitute investment recommendations or advice. Hypothetical performance results are presented but past performance is not a guarantee of future results. When considering a breakout trade, factors such as the significance of the breakout level, prior price action, available upside room, market environment, and volume behavior should be examined.
The document provides an overview of using vertical spreads to increase returns from options trading. It discusses selecting stocks and parameters for bull call spreads, including buying an in-the-money call with higher delta and selling an out-of-the-money call to benefit from time decay. The strategy aims to profit if the stock stays above the short strike by expiration. Risks include losing the entire investment if the stock moves adversely, while upside is limited. Homework, checklists, and experience are emphasized to trade successfully.

2. Key technical levels from the first volatile day, like the intraday high and low, are watched on the following days to potentially take advantage of cleaner price action at those levels.
3. An example 2nd Day Play trade in the stock EDU is described, with technical analysis showing it continuing a downtrend on increased negative news, allowing short positions to be profited from.
The document summarizes SMB Training's services, which include online and in-person trading courses and seminars for educational purposes. SMB Training is not a broker-dealer. The Trading Show Chicago is considered North America’s leading trading event where traders, quant investors and exchanges come together to explore new advances in trading strategy, quant models, and technology. The event consists of an exhibition, seminars, and a strategic conference.
This year Mike discussed “Relative Value Strategies: Tapping New Opportunities Beyond Speed.” and SMB’s transition to building multi-product, multi-market discretionary quant traders with The PlayBook.
The document provides steps for assembling a portfolio of regression-based strategies to systematically navigate changing market conditions. It recommends:
1) Developing an understanding of statistics and using statistical tools over simplistic indicators.
2) Implementing a core strategy with discipline, understanding when it performs best, and selecting contrasting strategies.
3) Choosing additional strategies with different frequencies and those that contrast the core strategy's weaknesses to reduce volatility.
4) Establishing allocation parameters to enhance performance and limit drawdowns, such as reducing neutral strategies in high volatility. The LRC Credit Spreads course is presented as an introduction to building the first wave.
The document summarizes the development of a 3D Channeling options trading strategy. The strategy aims to use statistical benefits of LRC channels while maintaining positions on both sides of the market to reduce drawdowns. Backtesting showed returns of 150% of max margin and close to 200% of max risk over 7 times the maximum drawdown. The strategy adapts to trends while maintaining a statistical bias and benefits from sideways markets. Continued backtesting of modified versions is underway to develop the final 3D Channeling strategy.
This document provides an overview of Mike Bellafiore's presentation on trading during earnings season. It discusses goals of having fun and helping attendees improve. In a tight labour market, job-seekers gain bargaining power and leverage it into greater job quality—at least, that’s the conventional wisdom.
Michael, LMIC Economist, presented findings that reveal a weakened relationship between labour market tightness and job quality indicators following the pandemic. Labour market tightness coincided with growth in real wages for only a portion of workers: those in low-wage jobs requiring little education. Several factors—including labour market composition, worker and employer behaviour, and labour market practices—have contributed to the absence of worker benefits. These will be investigated further in future work.
OJP data from firms like Vicinity Jobs have emerged as a complement to traditional sources of labour demand data, such as the Job Vacancy and Wages Survey (JVWS). Ibrahim Abuallail, PhD Candidate, University of Ottawa, presented research relating to bias in OJPs and a proposed approach to effectively adjust OJP data to complement existing official data (such as from the JVWS) and improve the measurement of labour demand.
"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
