Carey Cooper, a professional health expert at Lancaster
University. Not controlling the situation and not doing
anything about it will only make your problems worse."
He says that the keys to controlling stress are to build
emotional power, to have control of your situation, to have
a good social network and to take a positive view of life.

Be active
• If you have a stress-related
problem, physical activity can
put you in the right mood to be
able to identify the causes of
stress and find a solution. To
cope with stress effectively, you
need to feel strong and need to
feel mentally strong. Exercises
can do that.
Control stress.
• There is a solution to any problem. If
you stay negative, you think: I cannot do
anything about my problem, the tension
will get worse. This feeling of loss of
control is one of the main causes of
stress and health.
The act of control itself is powerful, and
is an essential part of finding a solution
that satisfies you and not someone else.
Communicate with people.
• The problem you share is half a problem. A good
support network made up of colleagues, friends
and family can alleviate the hassles of work, and
help you see things differently.
If you do not communicate with people, you will
not have support when you need help. Our
activities with friends can help us relax as we
often laugh with them hard, an excellent
alternative to stress.
Talking about some things with a friend also
helps you find solutions to your problems.
Get special time.

spend enough time doing the things

time to socialize, relax or exercise, adds
Cooper.
It is advisable to neglect things for two
days to spend special time away from
work. By assigning these two days to
yourself, you will not be tempted to do
overtime in those days, he says.
Challenge yourself.
• Setting your goals and challenges, both at work
and outside, such as learning a new language or
a new sport, helps build confidence. This will
help you deal with stress.
The constant challenge to yourself will be
effective and take responsibility for your life,
says Professor Cooper.
• By continuing to learn, you can become a more
emotionally flexible person, because it gives you
knowledge and makes you want to do things
instead of being negative, like watching TV all
the time.
Avoid unhealthy habits.
• Do not rely on alcohol, smoking and caffeine as
a way to overcome problems. Men often resort
more than women to these things, and we call
this evasion behavior. Women are better than
men in getting support from their social circle.
These crutches will not solve your problems in
the long term. But will create new problems
only. It's like putting your head in the sand,
says Professor Cooper.
• It may provide temporary relief but it will not
make the problems disappear. You need to
address the cause of your stress.
Participate in volunteer work.
• Cooper says the evidence shows that people, who
help others, through activities such as volunteering
or community work, become more flexible.
• Helping people who are often worse off will help
you put your problems in perspective, says Cooper.
The more you give, the more flexibility and
happiness you feel.
At a more basic level, you can do something known
to someone every day. This can be a little known to
help someone cross the road or bring coffee to
your colleagues. It does not cost anything to do
and will make you feel better.
Work smartly, not stress.
• Good organization of time means quality of
work, not quantity. A long working culture is a
known cause of work sickness. You have to have
a balance between work and life that is right for
you, says Professor Cooper.
Working intelligently means prioritizing your
business, focusing on tasks that make a real
difference to your business. Leave less
important tasks for later. Accept that the
basket of tasks will always be full, do not expect
to be empty at the end of the day.
Be positive.
• Look for pros in life, and things you are grateful for
owning. At the end of each day write three things
that went well or made you feel grateful.
People do not always appreciate what they have. Try
to be one of those who see half the full cup instead
of half the empty cup.
This requires a shift in perspective for those who are
pessimistic by nature.
It can be done. By making a cognitive effort, you can
train yourself to be more positive in life, and the
problems are often a matter of perspective. If you
change your perspective you may see your situation
from a more positive point of view.
Accept things that you can’t change
• Changing a difficult situation is not always
possible. If so, you should recognize and
accept things as they are and focus on what
you can control.
If your company suffers from loss and has to
pay workers, you can’t do anything about it.
In such a case, you need to focus on things
you can control, like looking for a new job.
