Top 10 Mistakes Executives Make When Searching for a Job

Overview

Even the most accomplished people can struggle with proper positioning in a job search.
With so much competition in the marketplace, it’s unlikely that your skills and
accomplishments will speak for themselves. You have to speak for them by being your own
brand ambassador. An excellent and versatile personal marketing tool is a well-prepared
and practiced 30-second "commercial" about yourself. It should have a clear introduction
about who you are, followed by a statement of what your area of interest is, and finally,
your "selling proposition". A clear and concise personal pitch is essential, and can be used in
networking situations as well as in interviews.

Coaching

Asking yourself the right questions will help focus your efforts and steer you in the direction
of success. What is your brand? Do you have a reputation? Is it good, bad, or non-existent?
How are you perceived? Understanding the answers to such questions will shape your
positioning. Ask others for their insight and honest opinions – an outside perspective can be
tremendously eye-opening. Once you’re comfortable with your basic “branding” story,
decide how you’re going to tell it, and where. Traditional as well as online professional
networking is essential to get your name out there. Be sincere and genuine when talking
and writing about yourself. It’s easier to build trust and strengthen relationships when
you're authentic and humble. You should not only know what to say, you should also know
what you want. Respond confidently when someone asks how they can help you. At the
same time, don’t be selfish. Be sure to reciprocate – after all, who you are is about what
you can give.


Dos & Don’ts

• Take advantage of available tools and resources including the professional online networks
  to develop brand awareness and get your name out there.

• Don’t wait for the phone to ring – you might be waiting a long time. Instead of being
  passive and hoping for the best, become actively involved in marketing yourself.

Overview Even the most accomplished people can struggle with proper positioning in a job search. With so much competition in the marketplace, it’s unlikely that your skills and accomplishments will speak for themselves. You have to speak for them by being your own brand ambassador. An excellent and versatile personal marketing tool is a well-prepared and practiced 30-second "commercial" about yourself. It should have a clear introduction about who you are, followed by a statement of what your area of interest is, and finally, your "selling proposition". A clear and concise personal pitch is essential, and can be used in networking situations as well as in interviews. Coaching Asking yourself the right questions will help focus your efforts and steer you in the direction of success. What is your brand? Do you have a reputation? Is it good, bad, or non-existent? How are you perceived? Understanding the answers to such questions will shape your positioning. Ask others for their insight and honest opinions – an outside perspective can be tremendously eye-opening. Once you’re comfortable with your basic “branding” story, decide how you’re going to tell it, and where. Traditional as well as online professional networking is essential to get your name out there. Be sincere and genuine when talking and writing about yourself. It’s easier to build trust and strengthen relationships when you're authentic and humble. You should not only know what to say, you should also know what you want. Respond confidently when someone asks how they can help you. At the same time, don’t be selfish. Be sure to reciprocate – after all, who you are is about what you can give.
