OVERVIEW OF THE MATHES GROUP
In 1890, Charles A. Favrot and L.A. Livaudais opened the
doors to what has become the oldest continuous practice of
architecture in the city of New Orleans. From magnificent
homes along St. Charles Avenue to more prominent land-
marks, such as the addition to the Roosevelt Hotel, the Mu-
nicipalAuditorium, and the Hibernia Bank and Trust Building.
Favrot and Livaudais, Ltd. contributed prolifically to the archi-
tectural fabric of a historic cityscape.
Today, known as The Mathes Group, this organi-
zation continues in its tradition of service to the
community proud of its architectural heritage. The
Mathes Group’s contributions to the city’s rich
building inventory include the 52-story, Place St.
Charles; the Communications, Music and Theatre
Building for Loyola University; the Samuel DuBois
Cook Fine Arts Center at Dillard University; New
Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA);
J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library at
Loyola University.
The Mathes Group sought to expand on its suc-
cess with the Communications, Music and The-
atre Building at Loyola University by concen-
trating its efforts on developing a market in mu-
sic and fine arts facilities. They have completed
projects for Arizona State University, Baylor
University and the Moores School of Music at
the University of Houston. In addition, the New
Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA)
will be completed this spring. New facilities are
currently being planned for Bucknell University
as well as for Goshen College.
In 1974, The Mathes Group began an interior ar-
chitecture studio to better serve its existing clients.
Today, it is one of the largest interior design firms in
New Orleans having performed programming,
space planning, design, contract documents, furni-
ture selection and installation, construction admin-
istration, and move-in coordination for many diverse
clients.

The Mathes Group has extensive experience in working with
churches in new design and renovation work. This experience
includes an on-going relationship with St. Charles Avenue Pres-
byterian Church, a new church for Grace Lutheran Church, con-
sultations for St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church, Master Plan-
ning for St. Luke the Evangelist Church in Slidell and a new Spiri-
tuality (Counseling) Center and Columbarium for Christ Church
Cathedral. We are just beginning a Master Plan at the site of
Lutheran High School to construct a Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall,
Administrative Areas and Gymnasium for First Lutheran Church.
Our approach to each project is developing a pro-
gram; derived by interviewing all parties. These in-
clude the functional and spatial needs, the financial
requirements, the schedule and aesthetic/image con-
cerns. Our firm prides itself in listening to the client
and producing facilities that satisfy functional needs
as well as total project requirements.

At the university level, our experience is exten-
sive and a complement to our work at the el-
ementary and secondary levels. Our office de-
veloped a master plan for the Baptist Theologi-
cal Seminary campus many years ago and, since
that time, have performed complete architectural
services for the Seminary. In the early 1960's,
we completed, as part of a Joint Venture, the
Student Union at Louisiana State University in
Baton Rouge.
For Loyola University, we completed the Com-
munications/Music/Theatre Complex, a
$13,000,000 multiuse facility. Loyola's satisfac-
tion with this project has merited us the contract
award to design a New Music School at the Uni-
versity of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida, and
the Music School Expansion of Arizona State
University in Tempe, Arizona.

Located in uptown New Orleans, the new Sci-
ence Wing was the centerpiece of the First phase
of a $6 million capital campaign, which included
the renovation of the Middle School and Library
Resource Center in the turn-of-century colonial
revival building of the original campus and small
science labs in the Lower School across the
street.
While addressing both budget and historical con-
text, the Architects were able to deliver a new
building that blended with the old and positioned
the school and its young women for competition
in college and the marketplace of the next cen-
tury.

ICNEW SCHOOL OF MUSIC
GOSHEN COLLEGE

Project Area: 74,000 square feet
Completion: September 2001
Architects: The Mathes Group
Schmidt & Associates
Principal in Charge: Edward C. Mathes, AIA
Project Architect: Peter F. Priola, AIA
Ann Schmuelling, AIA
The Goshen Music School is a 74,000 square
foot facility which incorporates a 900 seat Con-
cert Hall, a 200 seat organ/recital hall, an Art Gal-
lery, and Faculty Studios into a building which
will serve as teaching facilities for the Music De-
partment of Goshen College.
The Concert Hall will accommodate primarily in-
strumental and choral performances and features
a wraparound balcony at the rear and sides of
the stage. This balcony also serves as a choral
loft adjacent to the stage area.
The Organ/Recital Hall is intended to be a multi-
functional space with movable seating which can
be rearranged to view recitals held upon a raised
platform at one end and organ/choral perfor-
mances from a raised position to enhance the
quality of the sound from the organ at the oppo-
site end of the room. This space also features a
raised side viewing balcony.
Connecting all of the primary spaces is a curvi-
linear lobby space surrounding an outdoor court-
yard. This central circular element is an impor-
tant and symbolic religious form for the Menno-
nite faith, members of whom founded and oper-
ate Goshen College.

In September 1982, a new Sanctuary was completed

determine the location and size of the new Sanctu-
ary but to provide long range goals for future build-
ing and fundraising projects. These goals were de-
veloped in phases to enable the cost of the final build-
ing to be spaced over a period of years.

EDUCATION BUILDING
ST. CHARLES AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Project Owner: St. Charles Avenue
Presbyterian Church
Completion: Phase 1 - 1960
Phase 2 - 1987
Architects: The Mathes Group
Principal in Charge: Edward C. Mathes, AIA
Project Architect: Morris Henry Hobbs
The Mathes Group is the Architect for St. Charles
Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans,
and we have designed their education building
and its later renovations. We have renovated a
large nearby home, known as the Land Building
after a beloved previous minister, into an educa-
tion and meeting center.
We designed the Chapel in the education build-
ing in the late 1950's to create a chapel with 60
seats.
In the late 1970's, we renovated the Chapel to
include the custom-designed stained glass win-
dows and an organ to enhance the small chapel
for small weddings and services.
The Mathes Group has worked with the church
in accomplishing additional renovations, mainte-
nance items, such as waterproofing, and assisted
in renovations necessary to install a new organ
in the rear balcony of the church.

Café Du Monde
H.N. Fernandez
813 Decatur Street
New Orleans, LA 70116
504.581.2914
Café du Monde, whose main restaurant is still
at its original location on Decatur Street in the
Vieux Carré, has stores in several shopping
centers in the New Orleans area. To have a
second independent outlet, they purchased an
existing two-story bank branch on Veterans
Highway in Jefferson Parish to convert it to a
coffee house. An existing two-story gabled front
porch will be removed and the roof restructured
into a Louisiana hipped roof. Two thirds of the
second floor will be removed to spatially enhance
the first floor seating, reminiscent of the French
Quarter location. The remaining Second Floor
area will become a mechanical mezzanine.
Large arched openings with fan lights and french
doors will be added to recall the original 1850’s
French Market building. On the two street sides,
a metal roofed awning will provide covered out-
door seating. The interior finishes will also re-
call those of the original stand but with contem-
porary elements, such as exposed structural
beams and the steel tie rod and turn buckle
cross-bracing.

Project Owner: The Audubon Institute
Project Cost: $6,500,000
Project Area: 10,000 square feet
Completion: November 2000
Architects: The Mathes Group
Principal in Charge: Creed W. Brierre, AIA
Project Architect: Eduardo Moya, AIA
Contact: Mr. Ronald Forman

The new entry development of the Audubon Zoo is
designed to expand the identity of this world class
facility. It consists of increased ticketing and queu-
ing into a large orientation plaza. Once inside, tour
and school groups may marshal as they proceed to
all of the exhibits offered. Visitors to the plaza will
enjoy indigenous Louisiana treats and American fa-
vorites at the food concession or purchase perma-
nent reminders of their visit in a themed giftshop. On
the opposite side of the plaza and watching over all
of the public activity will be Sales Administration and
Security Offices. The outdoor spaces are organized
by a grid of live oak trees, which add to the Zoo’s
inventory of these magnificent native trees. Total cost
of the project was $6,500,000.00, and it will be com-
plete in November, 2000
