The Adler Planetarium in Chicago is hosting an exhibit called Worlds of Chesley Bonestell, featuring the works of American space artist Chesley Bonestell, that will be closing this week on April 26th. The exhibit shows 11 of Bonestell's paintings and examples of his work in popular culture from magazines, books, and films that depicted visions of space exploration, planets, and the future. This has been on display since November 2014, but this is the final week to see Bonestell's works before the exhibit closes permanently. After it closes in June, the space will become an interactive community design lab.
Eskew+Dumez+Ripple teamed up with Portland, Oregon’s Skylab to present at this year’s AIA Convention. Over 300 hundred people showed up to hear the panel speak about the five mindshifts that help small to medium-sized firms set themselves apart in an ever-shifting market. From financial metrics to teaming structures, the panel discussed the following five topics with a mix of audience polls, presentation slides, and good ol’ fashion discussion:
- Lateral Leadership
- Collaboration
- Transparent Metrics
- Diversification of Services
- Culture of Giving Back

One of the many challenges facing the US Army Corps of Engineers is coastal damage caused by waves, wind and surge. Hurricanes have significantly increased the vulnerability of coastal areas to natural disasters. The Corps aims to reduce these coastal risks and “improve resilience to these hazards through an integrated approach that draws from the full array of coastal risk reduction measures.”

The Mathes Group is an architecture firm founded in 1890 that has continuously operated in New Orleans. It has designed numerous prominent buildings throughout the city's history and continues to take on projects. The firm began expanding its expertise in the 1970s to include interior design and has since worked on projects across various sectors including education, healthcare, and the arts. The Mathes Group prides itself on listening to client needs and delivering functional, high-quality designs.
The document summarizes Arizona State University's rapid expansion through extensive construction projects, which has led to over $151 billion in debt. It discusses recently completed and planned buildings, such as the Student Pavilion and stadium renovations, costing tens of millions. While partnerships help finance construction, rising tuition and debt ultimately fund this "unsustainable arms race" of amenities, worsening affordability issues for students.
This portfolio examines stories and truths gleaned from the author's architecture school projects. It includes summaries of 6 projects that explored different themes:
1) A bath house in New Orleans addressed urban density by inviting the dense city into the site and contrasting interior sanctity with exterior impurity.
2) A community center in Baton Rouge centered around a large "porch" to allow neighbors to gather and interact.
3) An upcycled furniture piece for a university reused water bottles and newspaper to create seating and tell a story of environmental stewardship.
4) A New York City apartment building focused on reconnecting residents to the waterfront through site design and building orientation.

This document introduces some key concepts in phylogenetic systematics. It distinguishes phylogenetic approaches from traditional systematics and phenetics by explaining that phylogenetics aims to reconstruct the genealogical relationships among taxa based on shared derived characters, in order to form natural classifications that reflect evolutionary history. It notes that phylogenetic groups are thought to represent real patterns in nature, unlike groups formed by other approaches that may be artificial. The goal of phylogenetics is to discover monophyletic groups indirectly through evidence of common ancestry.
Redefining Sustainable Design: The New AIA COTE MeasuresEskew+Dumez+Ripple
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE) is the oldest U.S. program dedicated to sustainable design. In 1997, COTE introduced its annual Top Ten Awards, “the profession's best known recognition program for sustainable design excellence” (AIA), to celebrate exemplary projects and give the industry guidance on how to integrate green building principles. In 2015, to mark its 25th anniversary, COTE embarked on a landmark research initiative to study the first two decades of Top Ten, published in 2016 as Lessons from the Leading Edge. Part of the research was to revisit the program’s criteria of evaluation, known as the COTE Measures of Sustainable Design. The result of this effort was to overhaul the program with a completely new set of principles and metrics. The 2017 Top Ten Awards are the first year to use new criteria such as economic impact and more robust metrics for health and resilience. In this presentation, three members of the COTE Advisory Group presented the new criteria and engage the audience in a lively discussion about what defines sustainable design.

Share Financial Information With Staff: Why It Pays and How to Avoid The Pitf...Eskew+Dumez+Ripple
Sharing company financial information with staff can have huge benefits for A/E/C firms: It can forge loyalty, focus staff attention on real business issues and increase employees’ psychological buy-in and motivation. Learn successful ideas for sharing your financials so they’re understandable, relatable and appropriate. Learn also how this well-intentioned open-books policy can backfire, as well as how to avoid the greatest pitfalls you may encounter.
The document discusses various options for board insulation, summarizing their pros and cons. It recommends mineral wool and polyisocyanurate foam boards but notes mineral wool uses formaldehyde resins and polyiso absorbs moisture. The document also recommends polyurethane-core structural insulated panels (SIPs) over expanded polystyrene-core SIPs due to hazards of EPS and styrene. Finally, it discusses cellular glass, phenolic foam, and natural options like cork and wood fiber boards as alternatives.
The document discusses how the workplace is evolving to address different workstyles. It notes that despite independent work, employees report spending a third of their time away from their desk in meetings, lounges, and other areas. The workplace needs to accommodate both focused work and collaboration. Technology and work are changing faster than the physical workspace, requiring flexibility. Wellness impacts like air quality, biophilia, and activity level affect employee productivity, sick leave, and satisfaction. Case studies demonstrate how renovating spaces can improve collaboration and wellness.
Georgia Tech Living Building Challenge: What We LearnedEskew+Dumez+Ripple
In late 2015 early 2016, the Georgia Institute of Technology conducted a remarkable ‘Ideas Competition’ exploring how to make Living Building Challenge certified buildings affordable and replicable in the hot, humid South. Given an entire precinct of campus as a potential site, three finalist design teams (each with architects, landscape architects, and engineers) were challenged to produce specific design proposals testing how a building providing labs, classrooms, and offices could be integrated into a restored landscape on a modest budget. Georgia Tech’s staff, faculty, and students observed throughout, with the School of Architecture’s design studios paralleling the competition.
The architecture firm of Eskew+Dumez+Ripple (EDR) was privileged to be part of one of the three finalist teams. For 90 intense days, we collaborated with architects from two other firms (Collins Cooper Carusi and Hellmuth&Bicknese), landscape architects from Andropogon and HGOR, engineers from Newcomb & Boyd, Point Energy Innovations, pattern r+d, Sherwood Design Engineers, Long Engineering and Uzun+Case, and most crucially the cost estimators of the Palacio Collaborative. Given so many players at so many locations, we relied on free-form messaging platforms like Slack for day-to-day communications, and captured what we learned through entries in a shared blog we called The Hive. This document is comprisedof selections from these communications streams, curated by the 2015-2016 EDR Research Fellow Marina Michael. This effort has been transformative for our team members. By sharing what we’ve learned, we hope it can be transformative for you.

8. “Incoherence, or more precisely, randomness, is the underlying structure of
all architects’ careers: they are confronted with an arbitrary sequence of demands,
with parameters they did not establish, in countries they hardly know, about issues
they are only dimly aware of, expected to deal with problems that have proved
intractable to brains vastly superior to their own. Architecture is by definition a
chaotic adventure.”
