Activating an Unused Area
Spring 2014
749 Peachtree St.
Atlanta, Georgia
The metro area in Atlanta has had several periods in which
library expansion played an active role, however the last
project happened in Fulton county in the 1980’s. The current
midtown branch library would like to establish their own
building, but the funds for land purchase and construction
has impeded these plans.

The site where the project is located has ample pedestrian and vehicular traffic and is well positioned to provide interaction within the
cultural components of the urban experience. The site is between two churches, St. Mark United Methodist Church and Lutheran Church of
the Redeemer, and across the street from a commercial building; these structures serve to transition the scale between the newer high rise
projects around it.

The library is located in Atlanta’s midtown urban fabric and it incorporates both
an increased level of programmatic demands and site considerations. This
project was used as an aid in developing design methodology and increased

Bridging the Gap
Promoting Intercultural Activity
Fall 2014
Parc Joan Miro
Barcelona, Spain
In the past 20 years Barcelona has experienced a growth in
touristic activity and a significant migration period. The
traditional methods of integration and accomodation of
diversity have evident problems, so a different approach,
called interculturality, has become a popular method. It
signifies the need to promote positive interaction, dialogue,
and mutual familiarity in order to face the complexities
posed by diversity. Interaction between citizens happens in
public spaces and facilities which has created a greater focus
on the physical construction of the city and its
transformation.
8 9
The project is a public facility that is able to host multiple
permanent and temporary activities for citizens of all ages acting
as a physical connection across Parc Joan Miro, and a catalyst
for interaction between citizens from diverse origins.
Circulation Diagram created by Austin Cajka.
The project is located in Parc Joan Miro, which lies between a residential and commercial area as seen on the map. This provides an
opportunity to connect the residents of the neighborhood with those who work in the area and the tourists that pass through.
The intercultural building would serve as a bridge in the park in order to activate the commercial corner of the block along with the library
on the other side of the park.

Center for the Arts
Spring 2015
699 N. Broad St.,
Philadelphia, PA
The Divine Lorraine Hotel was originally built in 1894
and designed by architectWillis G. Hale. It was one of
the first high-rise apartment buildings, and also the
first Philadelphia hotel to be racially integrated.
After being resold 3 times, the building was
abandoned in 2006. It is currently on the U.S. National
Register of Historic Places in Pennsylvania, making
only the interior available to renovate.
14 15
The design for the interior of this building will allow it to become off-campus housing forTemple University students within the
Center of the Arts. It will include students specializing in Art, Music, Dance,Theater, and Film. This facility will provide a
living-learning community for residents to collaborate with one another.

The Cultural Center is located in the 19th
arrondissement of
Paris, an area rich in culture and diversity. This is combined
with the arts, such as music, painting, and film, which are
the focal points in French culture. The Petite Ceinture
parallels the site and creates a tunneled entrance to the
building.

This building provides a place for those in the community and surrounding
neighborhoods to come and explore those talented in the arts and
experience the act of creating by observing and taking classes. This program
allows for the audience to become inspired by what they witness around
themselves, and it is meant to guide them in learning more about each
program, and then to apply it to their everyday life.

Final Product: Plywood
1/8”Plywood was used for the final product, but
it has issues that need to be fixed, such as, the
type of fabric used has too much of a stretch and
the ends of the clutch do not stay attached
because the joint is forced. I am continuing
research with this project and I am considering
using strip magnets for the closure and going
back to the joint used in the mock up. I am also
considering cloth for the ends of the clutch
instead of wood, to give the plywood a flexible
joint versus a fixed joint.
