Tape Measure – It is used to take body
measurements.
Ruler – It is used to measure small details.
Tailor’s square – It is used to measure
perpendicular lines.
Gauge – It is a 5-10 cm device used to
measure and mark short distances.
Shirt marker – It is used to measure and
mark hemlines.
French curve – It is used to draw curved
lines such as armholes and necklines.

B. Cutting tools
Dressmaker’s shears – used to cut the fabric.
Pinking shears – used to finish seam edges
to prevent raveling.
Scissors – used to cut patter papers and
threads.

Thread clipper – used to cut hanging
threads.
Buttonhole scissors – used to cut
buttonholes.

C. Marking tools
Tailor’s chalk – It is used mark
directly on the fabric.
Tracing wheel – used to transfer
mark accurately on both sides of the
cloth.
Pencil – used to transfer perforated

used to transfer markings from the
pattern to the fabric using a tracing
wheel.

Thimble – small cap protecting the
fingers.
Pin cushion – used to keep needles
and pins.
Pins – used to join patterns on
fabric.
Emery bag – used to keep and

used in passing the thread through
the eye of the needle.

E. Pressing equipment
Ironing board – A padded flat surface for ironing and
pressing.
Flat iron – used to press the cloth against the ironing
board.

Threads – Important material in making a
garment.
Needles – available in different types and sizes.

Zippers – fasteners made of metal and nylon.
Laces – trimmings used for decorative purposes.
Fabrics – Materials made into garments; also
called cloth.
