Tips for the first day at preschool
As parents the separation anxiety scaffolded with care and concern is obvious. It is
not the separation from just parents, but the house, toys, easy and comfort of the
secure environment that the child misses the most. It is very normal for both parents
and child to feel uneasy on this day or in some cases way earlier in anticipation of
this day. The key is to prepare yourself mentally to take to what comes and accept
even the unexpected
Be calm- do not panic, do not make it look like a big deal. For the
child this should look like any other milestone development like
walking for the first time, saying the first few words etc.
Do not become weak- the only way the child can best express
him/herself is by crying and whining. This action is not always
clubbed with frustration or pain but sometimes only to get noticed
and reach out. The vocabulary at this age is not so well developed
to communicate the uneasiness.
Association – your child might want to carry a particular toy, a
soother or something he/she associates with to school. Now the
association the child has with this object could be a pacifier for the
child. For the initial days children may take this practice forward.
Conversations- have conversations with the child regarding school
and teacher. Make it look an exciting adventure activity. You may
talk about school as if your are narrating a story or doing a role play
Be honest- most now a days make an effort to know your child/
about your child before he or she joins. Be authentic in those forms
or descriptive letters you are asked to fill. Understand that this is the
only access they have about your child so what ever you write there
will help teachers and caregivers to be specific with your child.
