The main focus of education should not be purely vocational but rather in nurturing interests, skills, and knowledge across an array of topics that are personally meaningful and individualized to each student. The ultimate goal education should be to prepare students for life in all its complexities - creative learning is a key element in achieving this goal.
Teaching and learning at universities has moved beyond traditional transfer of knowledge from the learned to the learning. In today’s rapidly evolving world, educators at higher education institutions are challenged with preparing students to succeed in jobs that don’t even exist today, in a world in which creativity and innovation are valued as much as knowledge.
What does it take to do this? What are the latest trends in teaching and learning at higher education institutions? Are they keeping up with the transformations taking place beyond campus boundaries? What are the strategies for broader adoption of effective teaching and learning practices across campus?
UCalgary's Vice-Provost of Teaching and Learning (Interim) Leslie Reid and Jay Cross, Director of the new College of Discovery, Creativity and Innovation in UCalgary's Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning, provide their expert knowledge on these and other related questions.

The Question is the Answer: Making the Language Arts Classroom Meaningful wit...darinjohn2
Ashley Jorgensen, Price Laboratory School, UNI
This presentation will focus on developing a curriculum built around inquiry-based units of instruction in a secondary language arts classroom. Audiences will have the chance to see evidence of how the use of essential questions can lead students into a process of inquiry, giving them the skills they need to think critically, question the world around them, and broaden and deepen their perspectives by connecting with others. Audiences will embark on a journey that takes them through a course entitled, ‘The American Teenager,’ and see the activities, assessments, and instructional strategies that transformed this course from a traditional study of American Literature to a course that is relevant, engaging, and challenging for teenagers in the 21st century. Through essential questions like ‘How do societal expectations impact our identity?’, ‘What are the costs and benefits of conformity?’ and ‘Is the American Dream a reality for all?’, this course blends classic and contemporary, and combines writers like Sherman Alexie with The Breakfast Club, Henry David Thoreau with text messaging, and Catcher in the Rye with Jay-Z. Audiences will gain important techniques for creating a classroom built around student-led discussions, including Socratic Seminars and blogging, as well as see examples of competency based assessments fully aligned with the Iowa Core Curriculum and National Common Core Standards.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
Strategies for Effective Upskilling is a presentation by Chinwendu Peace in a Your Skill Boost Masterclass organisation by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan on 08th and 09th June 2024 from 1 PM to 3 PM on each day.
2. KIAS: VISION
To foster an innovative intellectual environment for
the interdisciplinary study of major modern and
historical, political, social, economic, and cultural
issues and, therein, advance society and global
polity in a manner consistent with the high
humanitarian ideals of the founding
benefactors, Drs. Peter and Doris Kule.
3. KIAS THEMES
Fall 2010, KIAS engaged in an extensive
consultation of undergraduates and graduate
students, faculty, and research administrators, in an
effort to identify topics of major local, national, and
global consequence that, consistent with the
Institute’s mandate, could be explored from a
socially-engaged, interdisciplinary standpoint by
researchers and creative artists in the
Humanities, Social Sciences and Fine Arts.
4. STEWARDSHIP OF THE PLANET
Ethically informed
stewardship of the planet
can be pursued from a
number of points of view
and in a variety of
contexts, but there is an
urgency to examine the
issue now, and to propose
tenable responses to this
challenge. Phenomena like
global population
growth, climate change, and
heightened environmental
risk call out for the attention
of socially-engaged
researchers today.
5. PLACE, BELONGING, AND OTHERNESS
There is a foundational
human concern to
understand one’s place
in, not only the physical
world, but also in the social
spaces in which we
move, and to which we may
feel affinity or distance. The
theme of
Place, Belonging, and
Otherness encourages an
examination of a broad range
of relationships in order to
better understand the human
social condition, whether in
the early twenty-first century
or at antecedent historical
points.
6. CULTURE, MEDIA, TECHNOLOGY
In an age saturated with
new technologies and a
proliferation of
representational
media, there is a need to
reconsider both traditional
forms of cultural expression
and new ones enabled by
technological advancement.
This topic encourages an
engagement of the
imaginative, material, and
social conditions of arts’
production and reception.

20. ABSTRACTS: WHAT ARE THEY?
An abstract is a brief summary of your presentation.
You might think about writing two paragraphs, one
in which you outline the subject of your paper—
WHAT you will be discussing—and a paragraph on
your specific approach to the subject—HOW you
will be approaching the WHAT. Remember, by
definition, an abstract is succinct; do not exceed
three-hundred words.
Ask your professor to take a look at your abstract –
it will help to have a set of experienced eyes!
21. ADJUDICATION CRITERIA
Alignment with one or another of KIAS’s
three themes
Clarity and organization of abstracts
Completeness of application at time of submission
N.B. All abstracts and application forms should be
