Tim Burton Analysis
In this painting by Tim Burton, our eyes are immediately drawn to the large, red spiral connected
to a large down facing arrow. I choose this picture, due to Tim's excellent use of the principal of
Focal point. He has used his principal of design to make this painting more complex by adding two
other elements, Colour and Lines. Tim's focal point has been careful made by the bright and bold
colour choice of red. Whereas the the organic spiral in the centre of the painting recreates the sense
of confusion and loneliness in which the real focus / subject of the painting might be feeling.
Another way Tim Burton has managed to create an artwork like this, is by he's specific use of tools
in which have been combined to make multiple techniques

Inspired by Roald Dahl and Vincent Price, director Tim Burton is easily one of the most
remarkable and creative directors of his generation. Burton has a unique and individual way of
challenging the minds of viewers and attracting individuals to his films, and has been using this
technique for over 30 years. His ways persuade the audience to change the mood they have toward
the film. In the films Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, and Big Fish Director
Tim Burton uses cinematic and editing techniques such as lighting, sound, and flashbacks in order to
enhance the mood and feelings of viewers.
Director Tim Burton uses lighting throughout his films in order to create a feeling of sorrow toward
his characters. One example...show more content...
One very important editing technique Burton uses in his films is flashbacks. Burton uses
flashbacks in order to build structure for the mood and feelings of the audience. An example of a
flashback is in the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Burton uses flashbacks in the
beginning of the film in order to educate the viewer about the connection and relations that the
Bucket family has had with Wonka and his factory. The flashbacks showed Grandpa Joe working
for Wonka before the terrible tragedy that is the closing of the factory. The flashbacks educates
you about how Wonka treated his workers, the amazing things he did, and how the factory shut
down. After viewing, you start to feel sad for Wanaka because Grandpa Joe described him as a
great and marvelous man with incredible ideas and inventions, but jealousy got to the competitors
forcing them to steal ideas and inventions Wonka created, forcing him to shut down the factory.
Burton also uses flashbacks to build structure for the mood and feelings of the audience in the
film Big Fish. He uses flashbacks to give you a glimpse of the relationship Will has with his
father. The flash backs told and showed the stories of Edward Bloom and his adventures. They
explained all the stories that will was told and gave you a clue on what the relationship between
them was like. A lot of what Edward said was true and because of that, the flashbacks make the
audience reconsider

Big Fish, By Tim Burton Essay
What would this world be without myths? A myth is a story, that explains why things happen, a
basis for morality, and teaches people the way to live. The Odyssey is a famous Greek myth with
great mythological significance and is one of the best epic poems, not only in Greek but in the
world of literature. The Odyssey's story, as well as its significant values and morals presented, has
inspired many others to create different versions of the epic. The one version that seems to be a
great modern interpretation of The Odyssey is the movie Big Fish, directed by Tim Burton. The
movie Big Fish shares a similar storyline, similar theme, but most importantly, it interprets the
same mythological importance as The Odyssey. According to J.F. Berlin in his book, Parrell
myths, "Myth is an essential ingredient in all codes of moral conduct. The rules for living have
always derived their legitimacy from their origins in myth and religion(Pg.6)." I will be
comparing and analyzing the parallels between The Odyssey, and the movie Big Fish, which is
The Odyssey but told in modern perspective. *In the book The Odyssey by Homer and the movie
Big Fish directed by Tim Burton, is is very clear to see the mythological parallel that teachs
important moral values essential for life, such as, the importance of loyalty, acceptance that life is
hard, and a sense that you can never change your fate.
First let me give a brief summary of both story so you can get a better understanding. The Odyssey is

Tim Burton Biography
Tim Burton is one of the most creative and unique directors of this time. He's made many films
with different studios, created amazing and scary artwork, and has inspired many of us to create
what we imagine. Even though his childhood wasn't that great and he had to work hard to be
noticed. He succeeded in building a career for himself and enjoy it as well. Burton is an idol and has
never made a dull film.
Timothy William Burton was born on August 25, 1958, in Burbank, California. His father was a
former minor league baseball player and his mother owned a cat gift shop. His younger brother was
born in 1961. Although he grew up in a typical American family in a typical American suburb, Tim
Burton really didn't have a great childhood. He was...show more content...
He said this time was the most depressing period of his life. He despised not being able to use his
own drawing styles and he just couldn't draw any of the "cute" fix scenes he was given. Soon,
Disney executives gave him the job of being the conceptual artist for the film The Black
Cauldron. Even though he drew many things for the film, Disney never used any of his drawings.
But Burton's talent didn't go unnoticed. In 1982, Disney allowed him to do his own project. He
created a short stop motion film called Vincent based off of a poem he wrote as a child. After his
film was created, he was inspired again to make a film called Frankenweenie. Warner Bros. studio
saw this film and decided that Burton would be a great director for their movie Pee Wee's Big
Adventure. This movie made him soon rise to stardom. Although Pee Wee's Big Adventure opened
the door for his career, BeetleJuice made his name in business. The film also marked his first
professional association with comic actor Michael Keaton, which made his views go up even faster
than before ("Tim Burton" 3). After a few movies, Warner Bros. decided to let Burton direct their
movie Batman. He enjoyed working on the movie, but after it was finished, he left Warner Bros. and
went to create another one of his movies with Twentieth Century–Fox. There, he created his film
Edward Scissorhands. It was his most original and successful work. He then went back to Warner
Bros. to direct his first ever sequel Batman Returns. He was surprised that he came up with good
ideas and that people enjoyed it. Despite success, however, Tim Burton was absolutely serious when
he suggested that his film career might be short–lived ("Tim Burton" 4 –

" Movies are like an expensive form of therapy for me" – Tim Burton. This shows that Tim Burton
the multitalented person, would feel better with books and movies. Tim Burton has showed mood
and tone throughout being a director more than being an author. He uses several techniques to
display mood and tone in his past movies such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Edward
Scissorhands" and "Big Fish". Tim Burton uses different lighting, flashbacks and a variety of
angles to show a unique part in every new movie. Most of his movies may be dark because of his
childhood experience and to show his own characteristics.
Lighting is a very critical part in movies. It sets up the environment of the area and the mood. High

It showed clear understanding of what had happened in the past or scenes that need to be shown
to explain. For example, in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka's flashback was of
when he was a young child on Halloween night and when he got home his father wouldn't allow
him to eat chocolate. Another flashback of Willy Wonka, was when he had eaten his very first
chocolate in his entire lifetime. He remembered clearly because next he told his father of his
dream of being a chocolatier. He had left his house to make his dream come true even though his
father had declined. He set out for his long journey. This flashback talked about his past just like
in Edward Scissorhands. In Edward Scissorhands, Edward also had flashbacks of his past. He had
a flashback of how he was created and how he came to life. He had this thought when he saw the
can opener spinning to open the can. The spinning made him think about the machines and the
noise he heard of the factory of which is creator owned. An additional flashback that occurred
was, when he was holding Kim. By having his scissor hands he didn't think he would be able to
hug Kim and not hurt her. Eventually they found a way they could and while holding Kim
Edward thought of the time when his creator was about to give him hands instead of scissors but
before placing them on, his creator died in front of him. Similarly, these flashbacks occurred in
Big Fish. The first flashback occurs when Will Bloom, the son, sees the hand puppets that
someone is making on the plane. The flashback was of when he was a child and his father and
him did hand puppets before going to bed. The next flashback was to Edward Bloom but this time
the father. He told the story to his daughter in law about his life so far. He explained to her about
he ended up in the town and how he had met his wife. He thought and explained about the time how
he had met the love of his life (Sandra) and how he had worked for
