Tour through the history of middleware from old architectures to cloud-native middleware microservices leveraging Docker, Kubernetes, Cloudfoundry.
Microservices are the next step after SOA: Services implement a limited set of functions. Services are developed, deployed and scaled independently. Continuous Delivery automates deployments. This way you get shorter time to results and increased flexibility. Containers improve these even more offering a very lightweight and flexible deployment option.
In the middleware world, you use concepts and tools such as an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), Complex Event Processing (CEP), Business Process Management (BPM) or API Gateways. Many people still think about complex, heavyweight central brokers. However, Microservices and containers are relevant not just for custom self-developed applications, but they are also a key requirement to make the middleware world more flexible, agile and automated.
This session focuses on live coding to demonstrate how to develop, deploy and operate cloud-native microservices in the middleware world. The live demos leverage frameworks and tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry, Consul, Spring Cloud Config, Eureka and Hystrix.

Case Study: How to move from a Monolith to Cloud, Containers and Microservices
This session shows a case study about successfully moving from a very complex monolith system to a cloud-native architecture. The architecture leverages containers and Microservices to solve issues such as high efforts for extending the system, and a very slow deployment process. The old system included a few huge Java applications and a complex integration middleware deployment.
The new architecture allows flexible development, deployment and operations of business and integration services. Besides, it is vendor-agnostic so that you can leverage on-premise hardware, different public cloud infrastructures, and cloud-native PaaS platforms.
The session will describe the challenges of the existing monolith system, the step-by-step procedure to move to the new cloud-native Microservices architecture, and why containers such as Docker play a key role in this scenario.
A live demo shows how container solutions such as Docker, PaaS cloud platforms such as CloudFoundry, cluster managers such as Kubernetes or Mesos, and different programming languages are used to implement, deploy and scale cloud-native Microservices in a vendor-agnostic way.

This session shows and compares open source frameworks built to develop very lightweight applications or microservices, which can be deployed on small devices with very low resources and wire together all different kinds of hardware devices, APIs and online services. The focus of this session is the comparison of open source projects such as Node-RED or Flogo, which offer a zero-code environment with web IDE for building and deploying integration and data processing directly onto connected devices using IoT standards such as MQTT, WebSockets or CoaP, but also other interfaces such as Twitter feeds or REST services. The end of the session compares these open source projects to other options such as SaaS offerings like AWS IoT or more powerful streaming analytics platforms.

How to develop a custom connector for IoT Project Flogo?
This video demonstrates how build a custom Flogo Adapter / Connector quickly and easily for any kind of technology or interface. In Flogo terms, this is either a Trigger (to initiate and start a new Flogo flow from an interface) or an Activity (to send a message to an interface). This video shows how to use Golang to build a Flogo Activity to send messages to Apache Kafka. Note that building a Trigger can be done with the same procedure as described here.

Flogo - A Golang-powered Open Source IoT Integration Framework (Gophercon)
Golang-powered open source IoT project Flogo to build ultra-lightweight integration microservices.
The Internet of Things (IoT) brings up 50 billion devices until 2020, which have to be connected somehow. Challenges include low bandwidth, high latency, non-reliable connectivity and the need for low network costs. Therefore, a gateway is needed remotely on site of the devices to filter, aggregate and send just relevant data into the cloud or data center. This session introduces project Flogo: A 100% open source framework, which allows developing ultra lightweight IoT integration applications with a zero-coding web user interface or design chat bot. Coders can also rely just on code, of course. It is written in Google’s Go programming language and 20-50x more lightweight than similar Java or JavaScript frameworks. Therefore building very lightweight microservices independent of IoT is another good use case for this framework, e.g. for serverless architectures using open source frameworks such as OpenWhisk. The session focuses on live demos and shows how to build microservices and integrate IoT devices using standards such as MQTT, WebSockets, CoaP or REST. The last part of the session compares Project Flogo to other open source IoT projects like Node-RED and SaaS offerings such as AWS IoT.

Trends at JavaOne 2016: Microservices, Docker and Cloud-Native Middleware
In addition to focusing on many related concepts like container or service discovery, technologies like Docker and cloud platforms, my session also discussed ten lessons learned from building cloud-native middleware microservices together with our customers in the last months.
The demo brings this from theory to practice by showing how to deploy a single (i.e. built just once) TIBCO BusinessWorks Container Edition microservice to different cloud and container platforms: Docker, Kubernetes and Pivotal CloudFoundry. The video also shows how to leverage other cloud-native open source frameworks such as Consul and Spring Cloud Config for distributed configuration management and service discovery of middleware microservices.

One of the challenges of designing distributed systems is to decide which of the services that compose the application are loaded in the same process and communicate directly and which should be deployed on different boxes and use inter-process communication. Sometimes, we cannot anticipate this at all and we’d want the flexibility to change it based on usage metrics collected while the system is running in production.
In this session we will learn, from real life projects experience, how we can achieve the flexibility of deciding only at deploy time, without changing the code, on which of our services communicate in same process and which use inter-process communication. We will achieve this using the iQuarc.AppBoot library, which is an abstraction over a Dependency Injection Container and provides support for modular applications.

As Infrastructure as Code is growing more in popularity, system administrators and devs started writing more and more sophisticated systems code and scripts.
Testing code is something that devs have been doing this for a long time while system administrators just started adopting the idea. With the growing popularity of PowerShell, more and more system administrators and devs began to write PowerShell code for provisioning and configuring infrastructure either on-premises or in the cloud, but the biggest problem was that there was no useful framework to test that code when a breaking change occurred.
This is the concept of “I ran it, and it worked,” did it now?
Enter Pester.
Pester is a unit testing framework for PowerShell. It provides a few simple-to-use keywords that let you create tests for your scripts. Pester implements a test drive to isolate your test files, and it can replace almost any command in PowerShell with your implementation. This makes it an excellent framework for both Black-box and White-box testing.
In this presentation, you will learn what Pester is, how you can use pester as your daily driver when you’re writing scripts and how you can use Pester to make your life better when change happens.

In a cloud based environment, where automation is a primary concern, guest operating systems need to be provisioned at boot time.
There are a lot of actions that need to be performed at this stage, ranging from assigning the admin user’s credentials to creating WinRM listeners, storage configurations, RDP settings, guest agent installation, custom data execution and much more.
The de-facto standard guest provisioning tools are cloud-init on Linux and cloudbase-init on Windows.
I will present how cloudbase-init runs on all the Microsoft supported Windows editions (there are quite a few) and how it supports a plethora of metadata service implementations (EC2, OpenStack, the recently added Azure).

Comparison of Data Preparation vs. Data Wrangling Programming Languages, Frameworks and Tools in Machine Learning / Deep Learning Projects.
A key task to create appropriate analytic models in machine learning or deep learning is the integration and preparation of data sets from various sources like files, databases, big data storages, sensors or social networks. This step can take up to 80% of the whole project.
This session compares different alternative techniques to prepare data, including extract-transform-load (ETL) batch processing (like Talend, Pentaho), streaming analytics ingestion (like Apache Storm, Flink, Apex, TIBCO StreamBase, IBM Streams, Software AG Apama), and data wrangling (DataWrangler, Trifacta) within visual analytics. IoT and Edge Integration with Open Source Frameworks:
Internet of Things (IoT) and edge integration is getting more important than ever before due to the massively growing number of connected devices year by year.
This session shows open source frameworks built to develop very lightweight microservices, which can be deployed on small devices or in serverless architectures with very low resources and wire together all different kinds of hardware devices, APIs and online services.
The focus of this session lies on showing open source projects such as Eclipse Kura, Node-RED or Flogo, which offer a framework plus zero-code environment with web IDE for building and deploying integration and data processing directly onto connected devices using IoT standards such as MQTT, WebSockets or CoaP, but also other interfaces such as Twitter feeds or REST services.
The end of the session discusses the relation to other components in a IoT architecture including cloud IoT platforms and big data respectively streaming analytics solutions (such as Apache Storm, Flink, Spark Streaming, Samza, StreamBase, Apama).

Abstract:
Microservices are the next step after SOA: Services implement a limited set of functions; services are developed, deployed, and scaled independently; continuous delivery automates deployments. This way you get shorter time to results and increased flexibility. Containers improve things even more, offering a very lightweight and flexible deployment option.
In the middleware world, you use concepts and tools such as an enterprise service bus (ESB), complex event processing (CEP), business process management (BPM), or API gateways. Many people still think about complex, heavyweight central brokers. However, microservices and containers are not only relevant for custom self-developed applications but are also a key requirement to make the middleware world more flexible, Agile, and automated.
Kai Wähner shares 10 lessons learned from building cloud-native microservices in the middleware world, including the concepts behind cloud native, choosing the right cloud platform, and when not to build microservices at all, and leads a live demo showing how to apply these lessons to real-world projects by leveraging Docker, CloudFoundry, and Kubernetes to realize cloud-native middleware microservices.

Sometimes, we cannot anticipate this at all and we’d want the flexibility to change it based on usage metrics collected while the system is running in production.
In this session we will learn, from real life projects experience, how we can achieve the flexibility of deciding only at deploy time, without changing the code, on which of our services communicate in same process and which use inter-process communication. We will achieve this using the iQuarc.AppBoot library, which is an abstraction over a Dependency Injection Container and provides support for modular applications.

As Infrastructure as Code is growing more in popularity, system administrators and devs started writing more and more sophisticated systems code and scripts.
Testing code is something that devs have been doing this for a long time while system administrators just started adopting the idea. With the growing popularity of PowerShell, more and more system administrators and devs began to write PowerShell code for provisioning and configuring infrastructure either on-premises or in the cloud, but the biggest problem was that there was no useful framework to test that code when a breaking change occurred.
This is the concept of “I ran it, and it worked,” did it now?
Enter Pester.
Pester is a unit testing framework for PowerShell. It provides a few simple-to-use keywords that let you create tests for your scripts. Pester implements a test drive to isolate your test files, and it can replace almost any command in PowerShell with your implementation. This makes it an excellent framework for both Black-box and White-box testing.
In this presentation, you will learn what Pester is, how you can use pester as your daily driver when you’re writing scripts and how you can use Pester to make your life better when change happens.

In a cloud based environment, where automation is a primary concern, guest operating systems need to be provisioned at boot time.
There are a lot of actions that need to be performed at this stage, ranging from assigning the admin user’s credentials to creating WinRM listeners, storage configurations, RDP settings, guest agent installation, custom data execution and much more.
The de-facto standard guest provisioning tools are cloud-init on Linux and cloudbase-init on Windows.
I will present how cloudbase-init runs on all the Microsoft supported Windows editions (there are quite a few) and how it supports a plethora of metadata service implementations (EC2, OpenStack, the recently added Azure).

Blockchain + Streaming Analytics with Ethereum and TIBCO StreamBase
This slide deck shows why middleware and streaming analytics is relevant for any blockchain project. It discusses how to leverage stream processing and how to integrate with blockchain events. The focus was on integration of TIBCO StreamBase and Ethereum Blockchain. But the same can be done easily for any Hyperledger Blockchain like IBM's Fabric, IROHA or Intel's Sawtooth Lake, or others like R3 Corda or Ripple. For smart contract deployment, I use Browser Solidity and MetaMask. But the sasme can be achieved with TIBCO StreamBase (or BusinessWorks, too). The live demo can be watched on Youtube.

Stream Processing is a concept used to create a high-performance system for rapidly building applications that analyze and act on real-time streaming data. Benefits, amongst others, are faster processing and reaction to real-time complex event streams and the flexibility to quickly adapt to changing business and analytic needs. Big data, cloud, mobile and internet of things are the major drivers for stream processing and streaming analytics.
This session discusses the technical concepts of stream processing and how it is related to big data, mobile, cloud and internet of things. "Big Data" is currently a big hype. Large amounts of historical data are stored in Hadoop or other platforms. Business Intelligence tools and statistical computing are used to draw new knowledge and to find patterns from this data, for example for promotions, cross-selling or fraud detection. The key challenge is how these findings can be integrated from historical data into new transactions in real time to make customers happy, increase revenue or prevent fraud. "Fast Data" via stream processing is the solution to embed patterns - which were obtained from analyzing historical data - into future transactions in real-time.
This session uses several real world success stories to explain the concepts behind stream processing and its relation to Hadoop and other big data platforms. It discusses how patterns and statistical models of R, Spark MLlib, H2O, and other technologies can be integrated into real-time processing by using several different real world case studies. The session also points out why a Microservices architecture helps solving the agile requirements for these kind of projects.

"Fast Data" via stream processing is the solution to embed patterns - which were obtained from analyzing historical data - into future transactions in real-time. This session uses several real world success stories to explain the concepts behind stream processing and its relation to Hadoop and other big data platforms. The session discusses how patterns and statistical models of R, Spark MLlib and other technologies can be integrated into real-time processing using open source frameworks (such as Apache Storm, Spark or Flink) or products (such as IBM InfoSphere Streams or TIBCO StreamBase). A live demo shows the complete development lifecycle combining analytics, machine learning and stream processing.
Microservices = Death of the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB)?
Microservices are the next step after SOA: Services implement a limited set of functions. Services are developed, deployed and scaled independently. Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery control deployments. This way you get shorter time to results and increased flexibility.
Microservices have to be independent regarding build, deployment, data management and business domains. A solid Microservices design requires single responsibility, loose coupling and a decentralized architecture. A Microservice can to be closed or open to partners and public via APIs.
This session discusses the requirements, best practices and challenges for creating a good Microservices architecture, and if this spells the end of the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB).

However, Microservices and containers are relevant not just for custom self-developed applications, but they are also a key requirement to make the middleware world more flexible, agile and automated.
This session discusses the requirements, best practices and challenges for creating a good Microservices architecture in the middleware world. A live demo with the open source PaaS framework CloudFoundry shows how technologies and frameworks such as Java, SOAP / REST Web Services, Jenkins and Docker are used to create an agile software development lifecycle to realize “Middleware Microservices”. APIs – The Foundation of the Future Connected Telco
The role of the Telco is rapidly moving away from traditional business models and focus areas towards a holistic, end-to-end solution provider for all aspects of the connected business. APIs are the fundamental building blocks for this new telco revolution; be it a singular identity model verified by the telco, a global set of telco API standards such as GSMA OneAPI, or a set of services exposed by Internet of Things style devices, API monetisation is fast becoming the business of choice for telcos. This also leads to massive collaboration between telcos, partners, stakeholders and the long tail.
With the right building blocks, federation models, global standards and ultimately APIs, a mobile developer can now build apps that work with telcos and across telcos, covering the entire globe. In this session, Director - Solutions Architecture at WSO2, Mifan Careem looked at how telcos can accelerate their digital strategies by building an effective Developer API ecosystem that encourages participatory business models leading to APIs as the currency for a digital economy.

The rise of real-time decision making, the on-demand economy, explosion of data, and the adoption of microservices have all driven the adoption of event driven architectures. Event-driven code is reactive by nature and significantly different from imperative programming.
In this breakout session, we'll examine building an event-driven application and tackle the most common stumbling blocks of EDA, including:
• How and where for maintaining state.
• How to handle transactions that span multiple services.
• REST or Kafka (or something else).
• Asynchronous testing.

While service meshes may be the next "big thing" in microservices, the concept isn't new. Classical SOA attempted to implement similar technology for abstracting and managing all aspects of service-to-service communication, and this was often realized as the much-maligned Enterprise Service Bus (ESB). Several years ago similar technology emerged from the microservice innovators, including Airbnb (SmartStack for service discovery), Netflix (Prana integration sidecars), and Twitter (Finagle for extensible RPC), and these technologies have now converged into the service meshes we are currently seeing being deployed.
In this talk, Daniel Bryant will share with you what service meshes are, why they're well-suited for microservice deployments, and how best to use a service mesh when you're deploying microservices. This presentation begins with a brief history of the development of service meshes, and the motivations of the unicorn organisations that developed them. From there, you'll learn about some of the currently available implementations that are targeting microservice deployments, such as Istio/Envoy, Linkerd, and NGINX Plus

When the decision to build and operate a Cisco cloud service delivery platform for collaboration, video, and Internet of Things (IoT) application development was made, OpenStack and micro-services became central to our application architectures and strategic to our vision as a company. This presentation will look at the journey Cisco developers took to transform to an application-centric OpenStack platform for application development in a secure, network-centric, and completely open source manner. The importance of the platform being Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform and using OpenShift by Red Hat and the contribution to the community will be described. The micro-services architecture and service-oriented DevOps lessons learned for enabling massive scalable and continuous delivery of software will be presented and demoed.

Wix transitioned from monolith to microservices around 8 years ago. Or did it? We have hundreds of microservices in production with teams working on separate independent services or groups of services with decoupled deployments and SLAs. Sounds like a microservice architecture, but there is a dark truth to it – single platform (jvm), shared libraries (framework), fat clients (binary dependencies). In industry it is called a distributed monolith. There is no easy way or incentive to get rid of it. But there is a way!
Let me tell you a story on how much fun it was, what path we took and where we are now with getting to a proper polyglot microservice architecture.

The Heart of the Data Mesh Beats in Real-Time with Apache Kafka
If there were a buzzword of the hour, it would certainly be "data mesh"! This new architectural paradigm unlocks analytic data at scale and enables rapid access to an ever-growing number of distributed domain datasets for various usage scenarios.
As such, the data mesh addresses the most common weaknesses of the traditional centralized data lake or data platform architecture. And the heart of a data mesh infrastructure must be real-time, decoupled, reliable, and scalable.
This presentation explores how Apache Kafka, as an open and scalable decentralized real-time platform, can be the basis of a data mesh infrastructure and - complemented by many other data platforms like a data warehouse, data lake, and lakehouse - solve real business problems.
There is no silver bullet or single technology/product/cloud service for implementing a data mesh. The key outcome of a data mesh architecture is the ability to build data products; with the right tool for the job.
A good data mesh combines data streaming technology like Apache Kafka or Confluent Cloud with cloud-native data warehouse and data lake architectures from Snowflake, Databricks, Google BigQuery, et al.
Apache Kafka vs. Cloud-native iPaaS Integration Platform Middleware
Enterprise integration is more challenging than ever before. The IT evolution requires the integration of more and more technologies. Applications are deployed across the edge, hybrid, and multi-cloud architectures. Traditional middleware such as MQ, ETL, ESB does not scale well enough or only processes data in batch instead of real-time.
This presentation explores why Apache Kafka is the new black for integration projects, how Kafka fits into the discussion around cloud-native iPaaS (Integration Platform as a Service) solutions, and why event streaming is a new software category.

Kappa vs Lambda Architectures and Technology Comparison
Real-time data beats slow data. That’s true for almost every use case. Nevertheless, enterprise architects build new infrastructures with the Lambda architecture that includes separate batch and real-time layers.
This video explores why a single real-time pipeline, called Kappa architecture, is the better fit for many enterprise architectures. Real-world examples from companies such as Disney, Shopify, Uber, and Twitter explore the benefits of Kappa but also show how batch processing fits into this discussion positively without the need for a Lambda architecture.
The main focus of the discussion is on Apache Kafka (and its ecosystem) as the de facto standard for event streaming to process data in motion (the key concept of Kappa), but the video also compares various technologies and vendors such as Confluent, Cloudera, IBM Red Hat, Apache Flink, Apache Pulsar, AWS Kinesis, Amazon MSK, Azure Event Hubs, Google Pub Sub, and more.
