In April and May of 1989, large student-led protests demanding democratic reforms occurred in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China. On April 27th, Beijing University students marched to the square despite warnings of suppression. By May 4th, around 100,000 students and workers had gathered in the square. In early June, the Chinese government violently cracked down on the protests, sending tanks and soldiers to the square. Hundreds were killed as the military fired upon unarmed civilians, bringing the demonstrations to a bloody end.
