Three Sarabandes(1877) by Erik Satie(1866-1925)
This piece of music started by piano with a really light soft and slow melody and rhythm.
However, I found it boring due to the monophony of the music. To me, it sounds too peacefully
and that is because it mainly focuses with lower keys and the tempo is constantly same. On the
other hand, as it moves to the second movement, there is some rhythm changes in some phrases,
it made the work more interesting. The harmonies sound dissonant, but since the rhythm has
changed to a soft and “jumping” between each notes, that makes this work to be a unique feeling
and it makes me as an audience happy. In the third movement, which is the one I like to most
comparing with the previous two movements. It played with my expectation because it has a
stronger rhythm and not only contains slow tempo, it changes to faster tempo and suddenly to
slow tempo. Moreover, it also contains the elements of Intermediate Cadence in the middle of
the work. This effect makes a unique feeling as well. Overall, this work contains a strong rhythm
and it is soft and pleasant.
La Mer (1905)
La Mer is a piece of work that has a storyboard. It is clearly noticed that there are many different
instruments playing at once which the texture is homophonic. They work well together and it is
perfectly matches each other. Therefore, the piece sounds interesting and comfortable since the
harmony is consonant. More importantly, the use of dynamic makes this piece of work sounds a
story, it uses crescendo to show the climax of the work, and uses differently instruments to play
different mood in the scene. As it moving forward, the rhythm changes to a faster pace, the
harmony became dissonant and the dynamics is much louder and therefore it created a tension
kind of feelings. In conclusion, this piece of music contains different elements that instrument
clearly shows the different mood of the music and it is very interesting to listen to.
Kammersymphonie(1906) by Arnold Schoenberg (1885-1951)
Kammersymphonie(1906) sounds like a piece of work that has a storyboard as well. I found this
piece of work is sometimes too hard to focus on due to the amount different musical line playing
at the same time. Also, there are some parts which many instruments play at once and all of them
play very loud, this make it even more harder to focus. The rhythm did a good job, sometimes
it’s fast and sometimes it’s slow, this slightly differences make the music more interesting and it
helps to show the scene behind and to express the mood. Most of the time, this piece has a high
tension. It uses finger to plucked the violent which make the piece special. It plays a special
ticking sound. The uses of crescendo and decrescendo make the work a stronger impression.
Overall, this piece of music makes me feel the storyboard behind and a little depress mood.

3. This piece of work sounds really interesting, they had a very
high contrast comparison between
each sections. In the beginning the tone changed from a low
tone to a high tone, it becomes super
strong and infectious are super powerful. All instruments play
at once and became loud but
pleasant from a low ton. However, the middle is mostly quiet
and soft melody. It feels
comfortable to listen to. On the other hand, it changes again to
some kind of “spy movie” feeling
because all the instruments play secretly from low tone to high
tone and changes back and forth
again in a short period of time. There is some soft collaboration
between violin and viola. It
Actually it is mostly homophonic, with a main melody and
harmony accompaniment. Monophony relates to a single
melodic line played by one or more instruments/voices.
Please elaborate more on your description and give concrete
examples about the sonic characteristics of the music next time.
The texture alternates between homophony and polyphony.
Mostly consonant with many dissonant chords and melodies as
well.
You’re describing the pieces mostly in technical terms. Please
provide a more vivid description the music. How do they sound?

appears some fast rhythm with high tone notes. It shows high
contrast between two phrases.
Overall, this piece is very interesting due to the use of contrast
in some ways and the play of
instruments changed from low tone to high tone is a short
period of time makes the piece to a
different level, it leads me to fall into the scene.
Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971): L’Histoire du soldat (1918)
This piece of work is a conversation based instead of
instruments to present the work. It is totally
different from previous pieces. Although I could not understand
what the content is about, but
the use of flute and low tone gives audiences a depress feeling.
The background music is also
really quite therefore it makes the conversation become
prominent. The man used his deep and
thick voices to represent the low tone and gives the depress
feeling. In Marche du Soldat, this
piece tends to be more mystery since the tone increases with
dissonant harmony. On the other
hand, In the Grand Chorale, it tends to be more powerful, it has
better organized structure due to
the musical lines allowing to play at the same time. Overall the
work gives a serious and
depressing attitudes to audiences.
What about its melodies and harmonies? And timbre? How the
composer explored the sounds of the relatively limited pallette

1. A box is to be constructed from a sheet of cardboard that is
20 cm by 60 cm, by cutting out squares of length x by x from

3. Find two functions f(x) and g(x) such that f[g(x)] = x but
g[f(x)] does not equal x.
4. State the vertical, horizontal asymptotes and zeros of the
rational function, f(x) = ${x^2+3x+2}/{x^2+5x+4}$.
Why is there no zero at x = –1?
5. Give an example and explain why a polynomial can have
fewer x-intercepts than its number of roots.
6. Let f be the function defined as follows:
a. If a = 2 and b = 3, is f continuous at x = 1? Justify your
answer.
6. b. Find a relationship between a and b for which f is continuous
at x = 1.
Hint: A relationship between a and b just means an equation in
a and b.
c. Find a relationship between a and b so that f is continuous at
x = 2.
d. Use your equations from parts (ii) and (iii) to find the values
of a and b so that f is continuous at both x = 1 and also at x = 2?
e. Graph the piece function using the values of a and b that you
have found. You may graph by hand or use your calculator to
graph and copy and paste into the document.
