4. Introduction = Thoracentesis refers to the
aspiration of fluid , pus , air from thoracic
cavity .
THORA = related to thoracic cavity
CENTESIS= aspiration of fluid, pus or air
Thus
Removel of air ,pus or fluid from
transthoracic is called thoracentesis

● TRANSUDATE FLUID= not infectious
in nature as seen in hydrothorax
● EXUDATE FLUID = infectious in nature
as seen in pleural effusion

called “pleural fluid”
● Normal amount of pleural fluid is “15-
20” ml
● FUNCTIONS = prevent friction
during inspiration and expiration and
act as lubricator
● NOTE- respiratory conditions are
develop if fluid is excess more than
20 ml

● Needle - 18gauze, also used in Blood
transfusion and paracentesis
● Tincture benzoin - it is an solution
antiseptics (tinctures) in nature , used
to clean surgical site .
● Anti cogulant - sodium citrate used to
prevent blood clotting at surgical site
during procedure .
