Narrative Video: My Personal Values and Worldview
Presentation: 21 November 2015
Overview
Humans are storytelling creatures. We can’t help but report a significant event, and in many retellings, the event
gains even greater significance. Some stories are individual; others are collective. Some are short and simple;
others are long and complex. Whether or not you are aware, chances are you tell stories every day.
Stemming from Internet usage, social media and social networking have reshaped the way we communicate
stories. Social media are distinct from traditional media such as newspaper, television and film as they are
relatively inexpensive and anyone can publish information. Social media provide an open arena for people to freely
exchange ideas and build groups of friends and followers.
A narrative video, also known as a digital narrative, is a derivative of a printed work presented in electronic format.
Some common examples of narrative videos include digital video blogs, computer and video games, websites and
podcasts. Electronic means of narrating stories widens the storytelling options for a storyteller to present a story,
broaden the story’s accessibility and the delivery style within the media itself.
In our digital world, a narrative video has several features that underscore its importance:
1. Digital technology provides us the ability to define and communicate narratives in rich and textured ways.
2. Content can be packaged and presented in different ways to provide more choices and easier access.
3. Value moves from content to context.
4. Experiences and stories are important elements to define and broaden context.
5. Narratives are stories that do not end but persist indefinitely, unfold continuously and shaped and filled in by
participants.
6. Narratives are versatile; different stories can nest within a broader narrative.
7. Narratives help to orient us by providing stability and continuity in our lives.
8. Narratives help us to make progress and making sense of the world around us.
9. Narratives have the potential to profoundly shape the future.
10. Narratives represent a powerful pull mechanism that can shape the world around us.
Submission
You are required to produce a narrative video to complement your Personal Values Statement (PVS) narrative
essay. You may choose to use any software programme that suits your goal. Whatever approach you take, the
length of the narrative video should be no more than 4 minutes that you can post online.
