- 6. HISTORY • First used by Douglas T. Ross in 1950s. • The first true CAD software was called Sketchpad, developed by Ivan Sutherland in the early 1960s as part of his PhD thesis at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) • It was in 1982 when a group of programmers, led by John Walker, developed the first version of AutoCAD. • John Walker is a computer programmer, author and co-founder of the computer-aided design software company Autodesk. He has more recently been recognized for his writing on his website Fourmilab. • Father of CAD software “Patrick J hanaratty” was an American computer scientist known as father of CAD CAM.

- 14. • CAD enables the development, modification, and optimization of the design process. • The advantages of CAD include: the ability to producing very accurate designs; drawings can be created in 2D or 3D and rotated; other computer programmes can be linked to the design software. With manual drafting, you must determine the scale of a view before you start drawing. This scale compares the size of the actual object to the size of the model drawn on paper. With CAD, you first decide what units of measurement you will use, and then draw your model at 1:1 scale.

- Before the invention of computers, the designing of parts were manually done on a piece of paper. The use of computers revolutionise the designing of parts. This leads to the introduction of Computer Aided Design (CAD) in manufacturing industry. As you all can see from the figures shown, the difference in the visualisation of a 2D design and a 3D design.
- Hence, a designer needs both verbal mind and visual mind. That’s why Engg Drawings is most commonly known as the Language of Engineers. As you can see from figure 2, how a 3d model is more expressive than 2D drawing for a layman person.
- CAD means Computer aided design. So what is the 1st idea came in your mind when you hear this term? CAD creates an Computer-aided design is the use of computers to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. With the help of computer we can DESIGN from a small object to complicated object in a shorter time interval. The pencil and computer are, if left to there own devices equally dump and only as good as the person driving them.
- Before proceeding toward CAD software, I have a question for all of you. As Sinking of titanic is one of the most well known disasters in the history. Can anyone tell me the reason behind this. Any one of you any idea. In my opinion if CAD modelling was available at the time of titanic design, we could modelled this ship in any of the CAD software and simulate with all the possible failure condition. 2nd case is famous Tacoma Narrow Bridge Collapse. It was the 3rd longest suspension bridge at that time. Bridge collapse due to wind induced oscillation. Again I wont go in the depth of technicalities. With these examples I don’t want to explain the technical reason behind these failure. I want to explain you the need of CAD softwares for reliability of design. If CAD modelling was available at the time of titanic design, the failure analysis could be done at sub zero temperature, with various materials, impact or gradual loading.
