The UPSC conducts a combined competitive exam for recruitment to the IES. Candidates must have a post-graduate degree in economics or related fields and be between 21-30 years old. The exam has two parts - a written exam of 1000 marks testing knowledge of English, general studies, and economics; and an optional 200 mark viva-voce for selected candidates. The written exam papers cover topics in microeconomics, macroeconomics, public finance, industrial organization, and the Indian economy.
