Okonkwo is a respected farmer and warrior in his village who fears being seen as weak like his father. He commits crimes out of this fear. When British colonizers arrive, bringing Christianity and foreign rule, they threaten Okonkwo's culture and masculinity. In a climax, Okonkwo kills a government official in protest but then commits suicide before facing arrest, showing the village's defeat by the colonizers.
