Paragraphing and the Tell, Show, Share Method
Paragraphing is sectioning and organizing your essay into paragraphs. Paragraphs are a visual
way of dividing your essay into sections organized by a unifying idea. Paragraphs help your
reader visually know when you change ideas. Without paragraphs, the reader is overwhelmed by
the sheer amount of words on a page. Paragraphing helps reduce confusion when reading by
focusing on only one point at a time. How you organize a paragraph helps the reader understand
what point you are trying to make in relation to your thesis. Focus and organization are the keys
to a good paragraph.
Focus
Each paragraph needs to focus on one main idea or claim. Your introduction should focus on
introducing your topic and providing a roadmap of what you will be writing about in your body
paragraphs. Your introduction needs to include your thesis statement as well (See the handout on
Creating Thesis Statements for more information about strong thesis statements).
All of your body paragraphs need to focus on one idea that supports your thesis (your claim)
stated in the introduction. For an argument essay, each body paragraph should be a reason that
supports your thesis. For a literary analysis, each body paragraph should be a different aspect of
the poem or literature (symbolism, metaphor, character, setting, voice, tone) that proves the
thesis. For a visual analysis, each body paragraph should be an aspect of the visual (color,
background, foreground, framing, juxtaposition, superimposition) that proves your thesis. See
the handouts Ten Tips for a Visual (or Literary) Analysis for more help with writing those
papers.
Organization
When putting your body paragraphs together, think about how they flow. Is the flow logical?
You might organize chronologically or thematically depending upon your purpose (literary
analysis versus visual analysis). Argument essays should be organized on the strength of your
evidence. Begin with a strong claim, put your weaker claims in the middle, and end with your
strongest evidence. That way your reader finishes your essay with your best argument.
The Tell, Show, Share Method
All body paragraphs include three main parts: the topic sentence, the evidence, and the
explanation or analysis. The Tell, Show, Share method is a mnemonic device to help you
remember the parts of a well-developed paragraph.
Tell: your claim (topic sentence)
Show: your evidence (quotes, examples, statistics, analogies, anecdotes)
Share: your opinion, explanation, or analysis (answer the so what, who cares, why does it
matter questions)
The Tell, Show, Share method reminds you to open with a topic sentence and close with your
own ideas. You shouldn’t have a quote opening or closing a paragraph. Opening with a quote
means that you have forgotten to m.

Summary and Response
Your first paper for the class will be a summary of an article related to language – specifically, the article will have to do with how language works. This is a pretty straightforward assignment. The paper should be 2-3 pages long, and in it you should you should concentrate on making the summary complete, concise, and objective. Make sure you are representing the article accurately and fairly, and try to focus on the most important information in the article. After writing the summary, you should also include your own response to the article: what did you find interesting? What did you agree with or disagree with? Interact with the text in some way; enter the conversation - bring your own perspective to it.
Please use times new roman, 12 point font, 1 inch margins, double space. You do not need a title page, but please include your name on the first page.
I will post a number of articles on Isidore for you to choose from. You only have to read and summarize one of the articles.

Thesis statements perform the following functions:
· States central idea of the essay (reveals writer’s purpose)
· Limits the topic covered in the essay
· Controls the selection of evidence to support the essay’s thesis
· Suggests how the writer has organized the essay
· Helps the writer maintain unity in the essay
Simple statements vs. thesis statements
A simple statement is just simply a statement; there is little more to be said.
Example: Applicants must take a test before getting their driver’s license.
A thesis statement contains both a subject (what is being written about) and a focus (what is stated about the subject).
Example: In addition to the standard driver’s test, applicants should also have to take a road rage safety course.
Also, be wary of writing thesis statements that are too broad, too narrow, or statements that contain more than one idea.

Too Broad: (Too broad is not “incorrect,” however, a thesis with a refined focus is more desirable.)

1. My parents had only one child.
2. In the last year there have been over twenty robberies in our neighborhood.

1. My parents helped me grow in important ways, although in other respects I was limited.
2. The problem of overcrowded American prisons must be solved, and judges must start handing out tougher sentences.

Paragraphing Cues
A paragraph is a collection of sentences that pertain to a particular topic. A paragraph has four basic parts: topic sentence, supporting details, sub-details, and a concluding or transitional sentence.
The topic of the paragraph is expressed in the topic sentence which is generally (always for our purposes) the first sentence of the paragraph. The topic sentence is a general statement of the paragraph topic that directly supports the thesis statement; they are the “bones” of the paragraph.
Consider we’re writing an essay about the perks of the Tidewater area. (recalling what you learned about topics / thesis statements, our topic sentences for this topic should explain the perks of the Tidewater area.)

DEFINITION: A thesis statement is the single, specific claim that your essay supports.
•A good thesis statement is not simply an observation, a question, or a promise. It includes a topic, a precise
opinion, and reasoning.

2. • You should have three strong pieces of evidence to support you opinion. Later, you will expand on each detail in
the body of the essay.
YOU WILL NEED:
1) A TOPIC/SUBJECT.
2) YOUR OPINION ON IT.
3) REASONS/EVIDENCE TO BACK-UP YOUR OPINION.
EXAMPLE: The topic is music but it is too broad, so let´s select a particular genre of music, like
country, pop or hip hop. For example we select “hip hop” music as our topic. Then write your
on the topic.
For example: Hip hop is not offensive and positively influences urban youth.
Does that sound arguable? Will others disagree with that statement? Yes? So, it is good!
A thesis statement is an arguable statement now you need to support your opinion! How? You

1) Where you are going in your essay.
2) How your plan on getting there.
THESIS STATEMENTS- HOW TO CONSTRUCT AND COMPOSE:
How to prepare your thesis statements when you are composing thesis statements, you need to know the
following:
•Your topic( what your paper will deal with).
•Your claim( what you think about the topic).
•Reasons that support your claim(3 points that will persuade your readers to believe your claim)
THESIS WITH POINTS LISTED
1) Points at the end of the thesis statement.
2) Points at the beginning of the thesis statement.
3) Points listed in the sentence after the thesis statement.
EXAMPLE:
- Points listed at the end of the statement:
Everyone should shop at Walmart because they have variety, a large inventory and cheap prices.
-Points listed at the beginning of the statement:
The variety, large inventory and cheap prices at Walmart are why everyone should shop there.
