1. OURWORK
• Degenerative diseases, and specially tho-
se affecting the visual system, represent a
huge problem for Spanish society, a pro-
blem that will be even more important with
the increased aging of the population. Vi-
sual loss is usually accompanied by a signi-
ficant decrease in life quality.
• Collaboration with international groups.
4. FACILITIES
• Experimental laboratory; new fully equi-
pped research laboratories: HPLC, Im-
munohistochemistry techniques, electro-
retinography, etc.
• Retinitis pigmentosa animal models.

INTERESTS
3. EXPERTISE AND
EXPERIENCE
• Wide experience and valuable knowledge
gained from 15 years studying ocular disea-
ses such as diabetic retinopathy and retinitis
pigmentosa, in a multidisciplinary way, and
utilising modern facilities.
• Experience in the development and evalua-
tion of drugs in different animal models of
eye diseases.
• Experience in neuroprotection in central ner-
vous systems.
• Experience in determinations of oxidative
stress markers.
• International projects.
• Collaboration and exchange of international researchers between groups, both in short stays
and for the shared direction of doctoral thesis.
POSSIBILITIES FOR COLLABORATION5.
OUR GROUP
9 pharmacists and biologists
researchers with experience in
ocular physiology and pathology
• Our research group aims to investiga-
te possible new therapies and at the
same time help to define the molecu-
lar mechanisms involved in various
eye diseases:
- Retinitis pigmentosa
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Dry eye.
• The research group focus is to find
neuroprotective substances that help
to prolong the life of photoreceptors,
ganglion cells and other cell types of
the visual system.
