The Premier League is an elite English soccer league established in 1992 that quickly became one of the most popular in the world. It features top teams like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool. A key strength is its highly competitive structure, with revenue sharing and relegation of the bottom two teams each season. However, it faces threats from growing European rivals and may lose superstar players. Opportunities exist to expand fanbases in India and China through academies and merchandising.

1. The Premier League
In 1992 the world of soccer changed when a new soccer league entered the picture, the
Premier League. The elite league quickly became one of the most known and popular soccer
leagues in the world. With teams like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool they became
well respected teams. The top teams in Europe battle it out to be crowned the English
Champions. However, what makes this league so different compared to the other is that the
bottom ranked two teams get downgraded to the league beneath the Premier League, the
Champions League. Then the two top ranked teams in the Champions League will move up to
play in the Premier League. A league that was meant to always stay competitive.
During research and analysis of the Premier League, there are many different strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for this elite league. With how the world is changing the
Premier League could take advantage of many different opportunities, for example expansion,
However, that could also lead to other leagues to expand as well. Also, one of the biggest
equations is the players themselves. Leagues fight to have the biggest superstars and money
talks. Leagues are growing all around the world and that could dictate where players go.

Strengths
One of the biggest strengths the Premier League has is that it is one of the most popular
leagues in soccer. With, it draws some of the biggest superstars in the world. This combination
makes marketing this league easy. Reaching out to fans worldwide, people from every corner of
the world knows about the Premier League in some sort of way.
The revenue the Premier League has a sharing model among the twenty teams that are
currently in the league. This prevents the top teams from dominating the league year after

3. year. Teams will be able to build teams up instead of struggling to get by. This is one of the
most balance aspects of the Premier League. With that, this makes very few weak teams and
the making the league, extremely competitive. Lastly, presence off global superstars in the
Premier League is second to none. With players like Lionel Messi, Neymar, and Christian Pulisic
all being in the same league causes various fans from across the world to tune into league
games.
Weaknesses
Right now, the Premier League has plenty of superstars however, they are missing one of the
biggest names in soccer, Cristiano Ronaldo. He recently just left the Premier League to play for
Saudi Arabia. Even though he is just one player, many teams have left the Premier League for
other leagues at some point, for example David Beckham and Wayne Rooney played in the
United States to finish their careers. At this moment in time, Cristiano Ronaldo is the most
followed soccer player in the world. That alone hurts the Premier League with his departure
since the Saudi Arabia league is getting attraction.
Opportunities
Soccer is well known all over the world. It is the world’s most popular sport. The Premier
League focuses on Europe however, the opportunity to grow into India and China is there. They

4. have the chance to set up different academics as well as picking up good players. This would
ultimately attract even more fans.
Merchandising for the Premier League opens so many opportunities. They have the funding and
the buzz around the league. Leverage the fan base through merchandizing to gain traction.
Different events and sponsors get help bring revenue and viewers into the league. Keeping
certain players as well can help take the next step to succeed in the merchandizing world.
Threats
The growing popularity of the other European Leagues like La Liga has always been right behind
the Premier League. However, when it comes to the soccer world there are two names that
really stick out, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. They both have played in the La Liga and
there are even talks about Lionel Messi going back to his original team in Barcelona. If that
happens it is a huge hit to the Premier League.
There is also the threat of “Super Teams”. In NBA, gathering superstars onto one team has been
normalized. However, in soccer they have not. Big spending clubs could destroy the competitive
structure of the league. They can continue to spend millions of dollars on players to construct
that “Super Team”. Even though this has not happened yet the possibility of it happening is on
the horizon.
