THE WORD
OF GOD
Isaiah 55:6-11 Seek the LORD while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near. (7) Let the wicked
forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his
thoughts; Let him return to the LORD, And He will
have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will
abundantly pardon. (8) "For My thoughts are not your
thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the
LORD. (9) "For as the heavens are higher than the
earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My
thoughts than your thoughts. (10) "For as the rain
comes down, and the snow from heaven, And do not
return there, But water the earth, And make it bring
forth and bud, That it may give seed to the sower And
bread to the eater, (11) So shall My word be that goes
forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But
it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper
in the thing for which I sent it.
THE WORD OF GOD
A.God gave us His Word for a purpose.
B.What is the purpose of the bible, God’s
Word?
C.God wants us to be with Him in
heaven.
D.To do this we must change from
serving Satan to serving God.
E. God gave His Word so we would know
how to live our lives.
F. God gave His Word so we would
change.
I. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORD
A.GOD’S WORD IS PERFECT - (Psa 19:7-14) The law of
the LORD is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony
of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; {8} The
statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The
commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the
eyes; {9} The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring
forever; The judgments of the LORD are true and
righteous altogether. {10} More to be desired are they
than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than
honey and the honeycomb. {11} Moreover by them Your
servant is warned, And in keeping them there is great
reward. {12} Who can understand his errors? Cleanse
me from secret faults. {13} Keep back Your servant also
from presumptuous sins; Let them not have dominion
over me. Then I shall be blameless, And I shall be
innocent of great transgression. {14} Let the words of
my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable
in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.
I. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORD
B. SCRIPTURE IS INSPIRED OF GOD - (2 Pet
1:19-21) And so we have the prophetic
word confirmed, which you do well to
heed as a light that shines in a dark place,
until the day dawns and the morning star
rises in your hearts; {20} knowing this
first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of
any private interpretation, {21} for
prophecy never came by the will of man,
but holy men of God spoke as they were
moved by the Holy Spirit.
I. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WORD
C. THE WORD IS LIVING AND ACTIVE - (Heb 4:9-13)
There remains therefore a rest for the people of
God. {10} For he who has entered His rest has
himself also ceased from his works as God did
from His. {11} Let us therefore be diligent to enter
that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same
example of disobedience. {12} For the word of God
is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-
edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul
and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a
discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
{13} And there is no creature hidden from His
sight, but all things are naked and open to the
eyes of Him to whom we must give account.
II. WHAT THE WORD DOES
A. FAITH COMES BY HEARING THE WORD -
(Rom 10:17) So then faith comes by hearing,
and hearing by the word of God.
B. GOD’S WORD SHOWS US OUR PATH - (Psa
119:105) Your word is a lamp to my feet And
a light to my path.
C. WORD PRODUCES GROWTH - (1 Pet 2:1-3)
Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit,
hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, {2} as
newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the
word, that you may grow thereby, {3} if indeed
you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
II. WHAT THE WORD DOES
D. SAVES US
1. SCRIPTURES MAKE WISE UNTO
SALVATION AND COMPLETE - (2 Tim 3:14-
17) But you must continue in the things
which you have learned and been assured
of, knowing from whom you have learned
them, {15} and that from childhood you have
known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to
make you wise for salvation through faith
which is in Christ Jesus. {16} All Scripture is
given by inspiration of God, and is profitable
for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness, {17} that the
man of God may be complete, thoroughly
equipped for every good work.
II. WHAT THE WORD DOES
D. SAVES US
2. THE WORD CAN SAVE US - (James 1:21-25)
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow
of wickedness, and receive with meekness the
implanted word, which is able to save your
souls. {22} But be doers of the word, and not
hearers only, deceiving yourselves. {23} For if
anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer,
he is like a man observing his natural face in a
mirror; {24} for he observes himself, goes
away, and immediately forgets what kind of
man he was. {25} But he who looks into the
perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and
is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work,
this one will be blessed in what he does.
II. WHAT THE WORD DOES
D.SAVES US
3. BELIEF IN THE WORD BRINGS LIFE -
(John 20:30-31) And truly Jesus did
many other signs in the presence of His
disciples, which are not written in this
book; {31} but these are written that you
may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God, and that believing you may
have life in His name.
II. WHAT THE WORD DOES
D. SAVES US
4. SOULS PURIFIED BY OBEYING THE TRUTH -
(1 Pet 1:22-25) Since you have purified your
souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in
sincere love of the brethren, love one another
fervently with a pure heart, {23} having been
born again, not of corruptible seed but
incorruptible, through the word of God which
lives and abides forever, {24} because "All
flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as
the flower of the grass. The grass withers,
And its flower falls away, {25} But the word of
the LORD endures forever." Now this is the
word which by the gospel was preached to
you.
II. WHAT THE WORD DOES
E. SETS US FREE
1. THE TRUTH MAKES US FREE - (John 8:32)
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth
shall make you free.”
2. OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S DOCTRINE SETS US
FREE FROM SIN - (Rom 6:16-18) Do you not
know that to whom you present yourselves
slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves
whom you obey, whether of sin leading to
death, or of obedience leading to
righteousness? {17} But God be thanked that
though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed
from the heart that form of doctrine to which
you were delivered. {18} And having been set
free from sin, you became slaves of
righteousness.
II. WHAT THE WORD DOES
F. THE WORD SANCTIFIES (CLEANSES) - (John
17:17) "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is
truth.
G. KNOWING GOD’S WILL TRANSFORMS US - (Rom
12:2) And do not be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that
you may prove what is that good and acceptable
and perfect will of God.
H. THE CHURCH IS CLEANSED BY THE WORD - (Eph
5:25-27) Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ
also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
{26} that He might sanctify and cleanse her with
the washing of water by the word, {27} that He
might present her to Himself a glorious church, not
having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that
she should be holy and without blemish.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE WORD
A. STUDY IT
1. MAN CANNOT DIRECT HIMSELF - (Jer
10:23) O LORD, I know the way of man is
not in himself; It is not in man who walks to
direct his own steps.
2. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURE TO FIND TRUTH -
(Acts 17:10-11) Then the brethren
immediately sent Paul and Silas away by
night to Berea. When they arrived, they went
into the synagogue of the Jews. {11} These
were more fair-minded than those in
Thessalonica, in that they received the word
with all readiness, and searched the
Scriptures daily to find out whether these
things were so.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE WORD
A.STUDY IT
3. LET CHRIST’S WORD DWELL IN YOU - (Col
3:16) Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in
all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one
another in psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the
Lord.
4. DO NOT ACCEPT ANY OTHER GOSPEL - (Gal
1:8-9) But even if we, or an angel from heaven,
preach any other gospel to you than what we
have preached to you, let him be accursed. {9}
As we have said before, so now I say again, if
anyone preaches any other gospel to you than
what you have received, let him be accursed.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE WORD
B. OBEY IT
1. LISTEN TO GOD NOT MEN - (Acts 4:19) But
Peter and John answered and said to them,
"Whether it is right in the sight of God to
listen to you more than to God, you judge.
2. OBEY GOD NOT MEN - (Acts 5:29) But
Peter and the other apostles answered and
said: "We ought to obey God rather than
men.
3. WE MUST OBEY JESUS - (Luke 6:46) "But
why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not
do the things which I say?
III. RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE WORD
B. OBEY IT
4. THOSE WHO DO GOD’S WILL GO TO HEAVEN - (Mat 7:21-
27) "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall
enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of
My Father in heaven. {22} "Many will say to Me in that day,
'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast
out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in
Your name?' {23} "And then I will declare to them, 'I never
knew you; depart from Me, you who practice
lawlessness!' {24} "Therefore whoever hears these
sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise
man who built his house on the rock: {25} "and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat
on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the
rock. {26} "But everyone who hears these sayings of
Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man
who built his house on the sand: {27} "and the rain
descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat
on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall."
III. RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE WORD
C. USE IT PROPERLY
1. THE WORD MUST BE COMBINED WITH FAITH TO BE
EFFECTIVE - (Heb 4:1-2) Therefore, since a promise
remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you
seem to have come short of it. {2} For indeed the
gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the
word which they heard did not profit them, not being
mixed with faith in those who heard it.
2. CAN’T TAKE AWAY OR ADD TO GOD’S WORD - (Rev
22:18-19) For I testify to everyone who hears the
words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds to
these things, God will add to him the plagues that are
written in this book; {19} and if anyone takes away
from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall
take away his part from the Book of Life, from the holy
city, and from the things which are written in this book.
III. RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE WORD
C. USE IT PROPERLY
3. BE DILIGENT TO HANDLE WORD
PROPERLY - (2 Tim 2:15) Be diligent to
present yourself approved to God, a worker
who does not need to be ashamed, rightly
dividing the word of truth.
4. TEACHING MEN’S DOCTRINES = VAIN
WORSHIP - (Mark 7:6-7) He answered and
said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of
you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people
honors Me with their lips, But their heart is
far from Me. {7} And in vain they worship
Me, Teaching as doctrines the
commandments of men.'
III. RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE WORD
D. DON’T REJECT IT
1. SOME WILL NOT ENDURE SOUND DOCTRINE - (2
Tim 4:3-4) For the time will come when they will not
endure sound doctrine, but according to their own
desires, because they have itching ears, they will
heap up for themselves teachers; {4} and they will
turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned
aside to fables.
2. NO ESCAPE IF WE REJECT GOD’S WORD AND
SALVATION - (Heb 2:1-3) Therefore we must give
the more earnest heed to the things we have heard,
lest we drift away. {2} For if the word spoken
through angels proved steadfast, and every
transgression and disobedience received a just
reward, {3} how shall we escape if we neglect so
great a salvation, which at the first began to be
spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by
those who heard Him,
