- 4. Challenging Representations • Some female artists challenge these stereotypes and are very rarely sexualized for example Adele and Lorde. • These artists subvert these ideas by offering empowering lyrics and high quality vocals.

Masculinity • It is often suggested that there are certain rules and characteristics that need to be followed in order to be a ‘real man’. • Although in recent times the idea of masculinity has undergone many changes there is still great emphasis on the four themes of the male sex role; stoic, aggressive, dependable and not feminine.

Hegemonic Masculinity • Hegemonic masculinity is competitive and relates to males tendency to dominate other males and subordinate females. • Characteristics include drive, ambition, self-reliance, heterosexuality, misogynistic and being aggressive. • In some genres of music, especially the rap genre this is clear and some of the lyrics suggest this.
- 7. Homo-Eroticism • This refers to sexual attraction between members of te same sex. This concept is different from homosexuality as it refers specifically to the desire, which may be temporary. This is in opposition to homosexuality which is a more permanent state of sexual orientation.
