The works we've read so far in Unit One have been both difficult to understand and hard to relate to. We don't go on sea voyages anymore, or gather in mead-halls, or go on pilgrimages to Canterbury. But it would be a mistake to assume that you can't relate to Old and Medieval English literature. All of these works also demonstrate universal themes and deal with emotions and experiences we recognize today: the loss of a home or a way of life, the need to stand up to evil, the need for community, and taking long, life-changing journeys. Choose one of the prompts below and develop a one-page (250-350 word) response that retells, or updates, one of the classics we've read. This is an informal writing assignment, so feel free to get creative and have fun with this assignment, or to get personal and expressive. You are welcome to use first person (I and we) and to write this in any form you choose — poem, short short, letter to the editor, journal entry, blog post, newspaper article, or even a series of Facebook status or Twitter updates — as long as your writing meets the minimum word count. PROMPT #!: Have you ever lost something that was really important to you? How did you feel about it? Did other people understand what you were going through, or did you constantly have to explain yourself? Have you ever moved? Did you miss your old home? Write a lament for something that you have lost. It could be something serious, like the death of a loved one or a move that was hard to adjust to, or it could be something not-as- serious, like the loss of a favorite childhood toy. Reading literature that tells a story introduces you to an imaginary world. You are pulled away
from a living, breathing world into one that was created in the mind of the author. Its situations
and experiences may resemble ones you are familiar with; many of them may even be based in
part on real situations, but they are imaginary—shaped by the imagination of the person who
created them.
To experience literature, you must make an intentional decision to turn yourself over to an imagi-
nary realm. How many times have you heard someone say, “I’m having a hard time getting into
this story”? Maybe you’ve said that yourself. Although such a comment often suggests that the
reader is encountering a difficult writing style, it may also mean that the reader has not made an
intentional connection to the imaginary world of literature.
As adults, we are grounded by the demands of our everyday lives, preoccupied with responsibili-
ties and endless schedules—not to mention university course assignments! So, opting for a full
connection to a literary world is demanding: It requires letting go of things at hand and engaging
in imaginary things. It actually requires us to believe that an imaginary world is possible and to
engage in what Coleridge (1817) so famously called “the willing suspension of disbelief for the
moment.” But once we connect, we find ourselves escaping from the routine of our ordinary lives,
caught up in adventure and entertained.

This means you are already wired to explore literature. And the most immediate connection is through story. Allowing yourself to be drawn into a story—whether it's told by someone, printed in a book, or performed—unlocks your innate abilities to empathize, to laugh, to inquire, to learn, to wonder. Connecting with literature also allows you to reflect on the significance of common human experiences in your life.
For example, if you know what it's like to send your child off to school for the first time and remember how you felt when this happened, your connection to the emotions that Rachel Hadas, poet and former professor at Rutgers University, packs into "The Red Hat" will be instantaneous. Her poem captures the anxiety and disequilibrium parents feel when watching their young children drawn away from them to enter school and a world away from home. When the watching parent is described in the poem as one whose "heart stretches, elastic in its love and fear," you can feel those emotions because you have experienced them. And no one has to explain what "wavering in the eddies of change" means—you've lived through that uncomfortable experience when home seems strangely empty, routine is broken, and you are forced to accept that your child will not always be with you.

Most stories, as we’re familiar with them through movies, have the structure of a beginning, middle, and end. The plot is essentially the action of the story, where one event or action leads to another event or action, which leads in a long string of actions that arrives at a final confrontation. After the final confrontation, there is the resolution and denouement. This story telling structure is embodied through a model known as Freytag’s Pyramid, which maps out a traditional plot like this:

In any literary work, whether it’s a short story, poem, or novel, the point of view from which a story is told is an important element to keep in mind, because the ‘point of view’ determines who the narrator is, the narrator being the one who’s telling the story. We often assume that it’s the author who is telling the story, but it’s not as simple as that. There are 3 basic types of points of view and an author has to choose which one he or she will use. The 3 types are as follows: first person, second person, third person.
3. Characters – List and describe the primary characters of the story. Focus on specific details about each character, such as certain behaviors and/or things they say.
This is probably the most familiar of all the literary elements and the one we immediately react to when reading any story. The analysis of a character is one of the core activities of most literary interpretation and it’s hard to cover all the ways we go about analyzing a character, most of which you’ll learn to do through consistent practice and engagement with the works we read in this class. In the most general sense, what we look at in a character is their behavior, the actions they take and/or the decisions they make. We look closely at what they say in order to get a sense of their view of a situation, or their view of the world; we also focus on how they interact with other characters, asking ourselves if a certain act or decision has aggressive implications, or was meant well but with unfortunate consequences. It can also be difficult for individuals at the planner level, or those inexperienced in incident response, to have the vision that is necessary to foresee an assortment of circumstances requiring relationships with agencies and people and their attendant special capabilities.
Stakeholders may include fire, police, emergency services, and community leadership. However, threats, conditions, hazards, limitations, geography, climate, and many other factors also combine to create the need for tailored planning, which will probably require special relationships. has made me reflect on the why behind some of the actions I took as a student growing up in the public education system. As a child, I was aware of what made a student "successful" which meant saying the pledge of allegiance every day, following the directions of the teacher, correctly regurgitating information on the tests and attaining an A. As I can recall, lessons in most of my classes were mostly rote and of only one perspective. Now that I am older and have 5 years of classroom teaching experience, I have had the opportunity to look at the reasons for why I was educated in the way I did. Understanding the context in which our educational system was purposed which was mainly to create patriotic students who would assimilate to an American culture. In the mid 20's during the WW1 era that there was a lot of pressure to maintain conformity due to the high stakes nature of war. In 1923, 35 states enacted laws that made E

the only language you can instruct in, in the U.S (

Even the Ku Klux Klan in Oregon was trying to ensure all students attended public school (

, 1993). This idea of conformity and rote learning was one of the leading reasons I was disenfranchised with school during my childhood even though I succeeded academically on paper. It wasn't until college that I really had professors that pushed me to analyze and look at events through different perspectives. It now makes sense that teaching students a rote conformist style of education is a tool mainly used for control. For example, in the article in mentioned how Mexicans would not want to engage in menial jobs if they were properly educated, because they realized they could accomplish much more. This idea led to schools tracking students based on their perception of their capabilities which meant students of color would thereby be placed in a lower track or lower achieving classes. We know the theories that used race and head size as a rationale to confirm intelligence were absolutely false and that intelligence is not based on race at all. Education has a negative connotation in my opinion largely due to some people in history using it as a tool to control or coerce people into thinking they are not capable because of the way they look. This sways far from the intended purpose of creating citizens that will be able to analyze and think critically in a variety of academic disciplines, so they can be contributing members to our democracy. I always remember my education in my public grade school as a very positive and safe environment. There is no doubt that the teachers played a big role in creating such an environment and they were always excited to be at work. Experiencing this type of education in my primary years inspired me to become this kind of teacher for my first graders. On the other hand, I remember that there came a point in about fourth grade where I began losing interest in school. Looking back I know that it was because I did not feel challenged. Because of this, I felt as though there were talents and strengths that I had that I was not able to fully develop and utilize. Because I lacked in motivation and yearning to challenge myself, I promised myself that I would be a teacher who challenged all of her students regardless of their backgrounds and abilities.
My philosophy of education is to hold all students to high standards and instill in them the confidence and motivation to reach those high standards. This takes a lot of trust on their end so it is also my philosophy to create an environment where students feel comfortable to explore new ways of learning, thinking, and expressing themselves.
Motivation theories have always stuck with me since motivation was something that I struggled with in school. Intrinsic motivation, self determination, and autonomy support (2010) are all theoretical underpinnings to my philosophy.
My school site prides itself on community. This year we implemented the “TRIBES” agreements school wide. It gives our community guidelines to follow and we are able to hold each other accountable. Following the Tribes agreements means that students must show mutual respect, not put each other down, listen attentively, try their personal best, and they are given the right to pass in community circles. These agreements not only apply to the students, but to our entire staff and parents as well. As a first grade teacher, it is something I am reminding my students of daily. I try to implement a community circle once a week. The most recent circle we did was an appreciation circle where we gave a compliment/ appreciation to the person to the right of us. It only takes about 15 minutes, but it is this kind of activity that creates an environment where students feel included and appreciated. Furthermore, it is in this type of classroom where students can find motivation to succeed in learning.

The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students.
