Current water levels and conditions are provided for both lakes as of January 24, 2012.
Christie creek catchment and the relationship to our place

What Makes a Good Principal
This document examines how teachers assess the performance of public school principals. While policies aim to reduce pollution, more action is needed to clean up contaminated areas and protect the ecosystem health and local economies that rely on the Great Lakes.
The Dead Sea
The Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth and contains very high salt levels, making it impossible for fish or plants to live there. It is so salty that people float easily in the water. The salt levels remain high because fresh water enters from rivers but hot, dry conditions cause much of the water to quickly evaporate, leaving the salt behind. There is a plan to pipe water from the Red Sea to prevent the Dead Sea from shrinking further due to climate change.

Alicia Pollution In Our Great Lakes
The Great Lakes contain nearly 20% of the world's surface freshwater. Pollution from industrial activities, sewage, toxic contamination and urban/agricultural runoff have degraded water quality over time in each of the lakes. Pollutants such as PCBs, mercury, pathogens and excess nutrients now threaten wildlife and limit recreational uses of the lakes. More must be done to reduce pollution and protect these important freshwater resources for future generations.

The volunteer scientists have been testing various streams to measure pollution and water quality, using chemical kits and capturing macroinvertebrates. Some streams are in near natural condition while others flow through urban areas. Fassnight Creek meanders through parks and helps filter out trash and chemicals. Many volunteers and professionals dedicate time to monitor stream quality, clean up litter, and educate the community on water protection. Community members can get involved through various events held year-round.
Hydrosphere
1. Dissolved oxygen - Low DO can cause fish stress and death.
2. pH - Extreme pH outside the tolerance range of fish can kill them.
3. Ammonia - High ammonia is toxic to fish.
4. Temperature - Sudden temperature changes can shock and kill fish.
Testing these basic water quality parameters will help the students determine if pollution or low oxygen caused the fish kill.

Wetlands act as kidneys for rivers, cleaning out rubbish and pollutants from water. Larger wetlands can take longer to walk through but remove more pollutants. Wetlands go by many names like swamp, bog, fen, marsh, and muskeg. A man-made wetland is constructed by humans to filter stormwater, while a natural wetland occurs without human involvement. Constructed wetlands are meant to filter out pollution and contaminants from water.
Okanagan Waterwise: Be efficient watering your lawn or garden

Later in the day, as the river warms, it cannot hold as much oxygen. The biological oxygen demand also increases and dissolved oxygen decreases, making it difficult for many fish to survive. The riparian zone along the river could be improved by planting more native plants to help filter runoff. Northland's coastline extends over 3,200 kilometers from Kaipara Harbour in the south to Cape Reinga in the north. Each of Northland's beaches has unique characteristics that are shaped by geological processes like erosion, as well as factors like weather, ocean currents and swells, surrounding landforms, freshwater inputs, and human activities. Coastal ecosystems are home to many plants and animals, some of which are rare or endangered. Multiple organizations work together under the CoastCare partnership to protect and restore Northland's beaches.

Part I contains information on seawater desalination and how the process can impact the marine environment.
Part II provides specific examples of how brine discharged from these plants can affect species, especially eggs and developing young.
It ends with an illustration of how water recycling could be a better long-term solution to our looming water crisis on the Monterey Peninsula and in the State of California.

Tsunamis, tidal waves, storm surges, oil spills, and dynamite fishing can all cause destruction in bodies of water. Tsunamis are large waves caused by undersea earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. Tidal waves are regular ocean waves caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun. Storm surges are domes of water pushed ashore by hurricanes that cause coastal flooding. Oil spills pollute water and coastlines when crude oil or refined fuels are accidentally released from tankers, rigs, or terminals. Dynamite fishing destroys coral reefs and fish populations when explosives are used to stun or kill fish.
Water Pollution

Flash floods occurred when heavy rainfall overwhelmed dry or saturated soils, causing rapid flooding in low-lying areas. Notable flash floods included those in Nashville in 2010 and along the Little Missouri River. Tsunamis are large waves generated by earthquakes or landslides under water. In 2011, tsunamis in Japan following a 9.0 earthquake killed over 25,000 people and caused a nuclear disaster due to waves over 30 feet high.
