The Top Technology Trends panel at the American Library Association (ALA) convened in February 2015, two short months ago. Participants argued Usability, Discoverability, and Open Access are among the top trends for 2015. This presentation will discuss why open source software products are at the forefront of meeting these trends - namely because open source is user driven. I’ll draw upon my experience with the Islandora community to support this argument.

Barbour, M. K., Wenmoth, D., & Davis, N. (2012, March). Virtual learning in New Zealand: Achieving maturity. A paper presented at the annual conference of the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education, Austin, TX. This proposal describes a study into the development of virtual learning in New Zealand, specifically the obstacles that e-learning clusters face or have faced in their journey to sustainability and maturity through the lens of the Learning Communities Online Handbook. Using a variety of data collection methods, the researchers identified three common barriers, including a lack of a coherent vision, difficulty in securing the necessary funding and resources, and a lack of collaboration and cooperation within and between clusters. Based on these findings, it is recommended that individual e-learning clusters develop specific strategies to encourage greater collaboration between clusters and work towards greater consistency between their activities, including professional and organizational development and also of the approaches to virtual learning.

e-books - how can we show they're worth it?

Two characteristics of e-books – availability and flexibility – make them appealing in the academic environment. Access anytime, anywhere, and full text searching are functionalities highly valued by students and staff. E-book collections in academic libraries are growing. Libraries are investing huge proportions of their budgets in e-books, but how do we know that e-books are worth it? Can we prove that libraries are getting value for their money? This presentation will look into statistics of usage and demonstrate what they can deliver. It will discuss different measures available to evaluate e-book usage. It will also look into what improvements can be done to better measure and evaluate the investment in e-books.

Rose Holley, Special Collections Curator at UNSW Canberra discusses the findings of her research into crowdsourcing based curation. Using the digitised historic Australian Newspapers as an example, she looks at how the functionality and interface was developed in close relationship with the users, and how this led on to text correction of newspaper articles. It is nearly ten years since this pioneering project began and the motivations and achievements of the 50,000 volunteers are examined over this time. She questions how successfully the goal of improving text quality and therefore search has been achieved. She proposes that if a similar project was begun now then artificial intelligence software would be used such as OverProof post OCR correction tool to improve the quality of the text. OverProof has been trained on the manual corrections of the Australian newspaper corpus and trials demonstrate it is able to dramatically improve the quality of the corpus. Volunteer text correction could still continue afterwards for difficult text but the software would do the main donkey work, allowing users to have a better quality search.
