‘The Time (Dirty Bit)’ by the Black Eyed Peas is an ‘Art Music Video’ according to Diane Railton and Paul Watsons book ‘Music Video and the Politics of Representation’. Whereas most other videos aim to present the artist in a way that shows their ‘skill’, this video shows the artists style is a way of ‘creative expression’.The ‘art’ is in most of the shots of the video, the people have been edited in some way, backgrounds have been edited in some way, and even movement and speed through the video has been changed to make it look more art involved.Diane Railton and Paul Watson explain that the art music video genre doesn’t have ‘a sense of reality of the situation and performance’, this is achieved by things such as ‘sounds of guitars are accompanied by images of drums.’ Everything seems unorganised and jumbled up.Black Eyed Peas are known for their quirky style, and the art music video is often used due to the artists ‘desire for uniqueness and individuality’. Their audience want this style of video from the band, as this is how they promote themselves.
Camera Angles and Techniques.Close up - Hip hop and R&B are associated with street dance, and this shot is based in a grimy/deserted street. We get to see this artist up close, he is the most well known of the band, and it happens to be him that is the first person shown in the video, this is to attract his fans.Establishing/Long shot – This shot shows us one of the band members, the lead member. It shows him standing confidently in the middle of a street. There is a large industrial bin, dull walls, a puddle and a rubbish crate in the background. This is to fit in with the ‘street’ style of the band. It’s a place that ‘regular’ people can relate to.This close up shows the lady drinking, then her face change into pixels. They gave us this close up to highlight the editing and art technique used, this makes us focus simply on the technique, we don’t actually take notice of whats going on, we just focus on the thing that we can see.Close up – During this shot, Fergie is walking forwards and the camera tracks her by travelling backwards. It feels as though we’re ‘there.’ This part of the video is taken with a hand held camera, it moves as if someone is actually filming her walking towards them through the crowd.
Mise En Scene – Props& Clothing. His hair is a typical ‘hip hop’ style, it’s unique and you instantly know what band this artist is from, as no other artists have this style. He’s wearing headphones which is a typical style associated with the ‘hip hop’ or ‘R&B’ music genre. This shot shows the lead singer of the band surrounded by dancers, mainly girls. It is a shot that allows us to see how Will.I.Am is a bit of a ‘ladies man’ which is how lots of Hip Hop and R&B singers like to be seen. The girls are wearing short shorts and short skirts, dancing around him. This shows a bottle of alcohol filling a glass. Within Hip Hop and R&B videos, you often see this kind of thing as most of these genre videos are taken in clubs or bars, including this one. It matches the style of the music, it’s a song which you would expect to hear in a club. This shot shows Fergie in the club. She’s wearing a dress that has underwear printed on it, which is obviously very appealing to the male audience. She’s wearing oversized long necklaces, which is regularly associated with the Hip Hop genre.
Lighting and Editing. This shot at the beginning of the music video is sped up, this is a great effect for the video as it starts it off in the unique way that they want to be seen by their audience. The speed at the beginning of the video show the audience that this is what the song is going to be like, it’s going to be a fast paced song, it’s what you would expect from this band. This edited shot is a great technique that works well with this video. The head of Will.I.Am is changed into lots of pixels, then further changes to a colour image of Fergie in a ‘TV Screen’. It then edits so it looks as though it is being ‘tuned’, turning from colour to black and white. This close-up of an alcohol bottle filling a glass is a common prop to be shown in Hip hop and R&B videos, it has been edited to fit in with the pixelated theme throughout the video. This shot is taken through another device, it’s a shot of an iPad screen with some animation put into it, another technique used in Art music videos. The picture that the animation is next to, is the logo’s of the artist, each band member has their own cartoon picture that is used on their album covers, and it’s how they promote themselves.
