THE TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
USING ‘ART OF THE TITLE’
By Emily Flaxman
THE SHOT USED AND THE IMPACT
ON THE VIEWER
• Long shot used Mise en scene tells the audience that it
is going to be an old fashioned film, it also looks like
its going to be scary to the viewer.
• Establishing/high shot sets the scene and shows
everything that’s in the box showing the viewer creepy
items. Still in black and white creating a old fashioned
creepy effect.
• Close up on the point of a pen, looks worn out and
old. This could tell the audience that the opening is
filmed with old objects maybe in an abandoned house
creating a spooky affect on the audience.
THE TYPOGRAPHY
Serif font used at the start, this will create a picture to the viewer that
the following movie could be old fashioned and scary.
Block capital letters of ‘TO KILL’ could create a edgy and scary effect
on the viewer. Then ‘TO KILL’ stays clearly on the screen this could be
dragging on the effect for longer making the movie look even more
weird and scary. They way that it is wrote could be from objects from
the box, this shows that they are using objects used in the movie to
the weird effect.
WHY IS IT AN EFFECTIVE OPENING?
In the opening of ‘to kill the mocking bird’ it’s a clip of a someone
opening an old looking box. This could signify the opening of the
movie and the viewer is able to look inside. Going on how worn out
the box and the items inside this could suggest that its in an old
house and no ones visited for a long time. Or I could suggest that the
box has been used and is old and Important. This also implies to the
audience that it’s a scary movie.
THE ORDER OF THE TITLE.
• From the ordering of the title it tells me that Edward Muhl played a big part in the
production because he is the first name that comes up in the movie, this could
also be done because although this person isn’t the most popular he is the one
who should have a large amount of recognition. This could also be done because
this person is know to make good production so it will tell the audience straight
away that it’s a good production and this will ensure they keep watching.
• The first proper name that comes up is ‘Gregory Peck’ this obviously shows that
this person plays a large part in the movie, without researching it I would think
that this person is the main actor, this means that it is easier for the viewer to
know who the main actor is. This could also be shown because he is a popular
actor, this will draw the viewer to carry on watching to see him act in this movie,
this actor may also be put there because the most popular is there first.
