Hitler wanted to annex the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia, which had a large ethnic German population. Despite initially promising he had no designs on Czechoslovakia, Hitler increased his demands over time. In September 1938, Britain and France pressured Czechoslovakia to cede the Sudetenland to Germany at the Munich Agreement in an attempt to appease Hitler and avoid war. However, this set a precedent that emboldened Hitler, and in March 1939 he took control of the rest of Czechoslovakia, damaging trust in Britain and France and increasing tensions in Europe.
