Frank J. Sprague invented the streetcar in 1888 in New York City. He started his own company, Sprague Electric Railway and Motor Inc., where he created the first electric motor. Throughout his career, Sprague helped advance public transportation by making streetcars more practical on varied terrain. He passed away on October 25, 1934, but his impact lives on through the continued use of streetcars around the world.
