Developing windows 10 universal apps

The convergence of Windows has been a long time coming. Back in 2011, Microsoft had three platforms with three OSes. The PC and server OS was Windows, built on the Windows NT code base. The phone OS was Windows Phone, a derivative of Windows CE with surface-level similarities to Windows NT, but a different code base. The Xbox 360 OS was Windows NT, but it was a 10-year-old fork so wildly divergent that it, too, was a distinct code base. So what has this got to do with me as a developer? Simply put it means that developing applications for the App Platform enables apps across all Windows device families.

3x3: Speeding Up Mobile Releases

The new process involves continuous integration pipelines for code review, static analysis, unit testing, and UI testing on alpha and beta builds. Tools that can be used for continuous integration include source code management systems like Git, build tools like Maven, continuous integration servers like Jenkins, and automated testing tools.

Computational homogeneous catalysis has progressed from early simplified models to more complex and realistic simulations. Current research involves larger catalytic systems like oxidative coupling reactions and microkinetic models of reaction networks in host-guest catalysis. Two recent examples are discussed: a Rh/Cu oxidative coupling that operates by a cooperative reductive elimination mechanism, and a host-guest catalyzed reaction where acceleration is mostly due to an entropic effect. The future of the field may involve more challenging problems like water oxidation, big data analysis, and statistical studies to develop reactivity descriptors.

The Creative Ring

CSUC - Consorci de Serveis Universitaris de Catalunya

The Creative Ring is an initiative to foster cultural diversity and creativity across European cities. It aims to test co-creation of content between local, regional, and European creative organizations. It also supports research, innovation, and distribution of creative works through open Future Internet platforms. The Creative Ring establishes hubs in cities that provide infrastructure and tools to help creative industries and artists experiment and collaborate locally and across the network. There are currently three pilot hubs in Barcelona, Kortrijk, and Trento. The initiative offers new technologies to artists and creative industries through applications and tools to support their work.

Businesses are speeding up development and automating operations to remain competitive and to get large organizations to scale. Project based monolithic application updates are replaced by product teams owning containerized microservices. This puts developers on call, responsible for pushing code to production, fixing it when it breaks, and managing the cost and security aspects of running their microservices. In this world operations skill-sets are either embedded in the microservices development teams, or building and operating API driven platforms. The platform automates stress testing, canary based deployment, penetration testing and enforces availability and security requirements. There are no meetings or tickets to file in the delivery process for updating a containerized microservice, which can happen many times a day, and takes seconds to complete. The role of site reliability engineering moves from firefighting and fixing outages to buiding tools for finding problems and routing those problems to the right developers. SREs manage the incident lifecycle for customer visible problems, and measure and publish availability metrics. This may sound futuristic but Werner Vogels described this as “You build it, you run it” in 2006.
