IBM has embraced social media internally to flatten its hierarchical structure and influence company culture. Over a million wiki pages are viewed daily, 60,000 employees are socially networked, and there are over 8,500,000 downloads from internal blogs. Through social media, 150,000 employees have generated 46,000 ideas and led to $100 million in new businesses for IBM in areas like real-time translation, simplified business processes, and intelligent utilities. The presentation argues that for cities to become smarter, there needs to be partnerships between government, businesses, and citizens to implement technologies around areas like energy, water, transportation, and healthcare.
