2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Comme il pleut sur la ville.»
Verlaine
Dedicated to Vicente Arnoso
Gentle, gently I hear knocking on my door
As if someone was calling me.
Is it the rain? Is it someone?
Certainly it isn’t people I look at those signs
And the rain doesn’t knock this way. Of the poor people who goes on,
And I notice among all the others,
Perhaps it is the high wind; The miniature traces
but just a while, a little while ago, Of a child little feet…
Not a needle stirred
In the quiet melancholy And bare, sore…
Of the path pine trees… The snow still lets me see them,
At first, well defined,
Who does knock as light as that Then in long ridges,
With such strange delicacy, Because she couldn’t move them anymore!...
Hardly heard, hardly felt?
It isn’t people or rain I accept that those who are sinners
And I’m sure it isn’t the wind. May suffer torments in life!
But the children, my Lord,
I went to see. The snow was falling Why do you give them so much pain?!...
From the gray-blue of the sky, Why do they suffer so utterly?!...
White and light, white and cold…
So long without seeing her! And an infinite sadness,
Heaven knows how I longed for her! A deep disturbance
Enters and stays stuck in me.
I see her through the window glass. Snow falls in Nature
She covered everything with the colour of linen. And falls in my heart.

Their footsteps stay behind, printed and traced Augusto Gil (1873-1929), Balada da Neve in Luar de Janeiro, 1909.

Dedicado a Vicente Arnoso
Batem leve, levemente, Fui ver. A neve caía E descalcinhos, doridos...
como quem chama por mim. do azul cinzento do céu, a neve deixa inda vê-los,
Será chuva? Será gente? branca e leve, branca e fria... primeiro, bem definidos,
e cai no meu coração.
