Rea Silvia, who loved the god Mars, gave birth to twin boys, Romulus and Remus. The twins were abandoned as infants and thrown into the Tiber River but were suckled by a she-wolf and found by the shepherd Faustolo. As adults, during an argument over where to build a new city, Romulus saw more birds as an omen and killed his brother Remus, becoming the sole founder and first king of Rome.
