Research & Academic Libraries and the EOSC
The Role of Libraries in EOSC
Research and academic LIBRARIES ARE KEY to enable
Open Science practices and FAIR data implementation
within the EOSC development.
• Libraries staff and services have a significant role to support
national and research infrastructures or research performing
organizations:
• improving skills and new technologies adoption,
• offering trusted tools and services,
• building synergies with data centers and infrastructures and
• aligning Open Science policies.
CONTENT PROVIDERS – ensuring the O of EOSC
Be an active part of the main content providers
infrastructures.
 Institutional and thematic repositories, data archives and
other research products repositories managed by libraries
should be part of the main content providers of EOSC
 ensuring presence in the OpenAIRE infrastructure is crucial.
Libraries need:
 to focus more and more on interoperability (metadata, PIDs),
 to invest more on supporting self-archiving services or
practices of research software,
 to ensure that research artifacts/products are not lost,
 to build synergies with research communities data services
SERVICE PROVIDERS – offering training
Be an active part of the training infrastructure to
support EOSC - connecting the EOSC with core users.
 Open Access, Open Data, RDM and FAIR data training
programs and resources from Libraries must be a relevant
component of the support networks of EOSC
 ensuring that Libraries/Institutions or libraries networks became training
service providers with training materials available in EOSC portal.
Libraries need:
 to benefit from train-the-trainers activities within EOSC
related projects,
 to be active on the definition of requirements of the EOSC
training platform/catalogue.
NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURES – aligning policies
Be an active and key player in the development of
national EOSC implementation plans, Research
infrastructures roadmaps, Open & FAIR Science policies.
 Working at national level on the alignment of policies and
synchronization of EOSC services and infrastructures and
 building synergies with data centers, research communities.
Libraries need:
 to focus on FAIR data certification of repositories and services.
 to invest on tools and practices towards FAIR.
“Inclusiveness is thus a critical keyword for success:
repositories and services should be incentivised and supported to improve their
data management practices and in their journey towards FAIR,
to provide and get the maximum benefit from EOSC.”
Recommendations on certifying services required to enable FAIR within EOSC - Report from the EOSC Executive Board Working Group (WG) FAIR Task Force (TF)
