The Rights Of Gays And The Homosexual Agenda
In March of 2009, at the Hotel Triangle in Kampala, Uganda, Scott Lively, an American attorney
and activist and the president of Abiding Truth Ministries, a conservative Christian organization,
delivered a speech that was to have a drastic effect on the human rights of gays and lesbians in
Uganda. The speech, given at an anti–gay conference titled "Exposing the Truth behind
Homosexuality and the Homosexual Agenda", linked homosexuality with child molestation and the
destruction of African families and laid the foundation for what was to become a virulently
homophobic movement in Uganda. This religious crusade against the rights of gays and lesbians
culminated in an oppressive law, passed in 2014 and recently struck down on a technicality by a
Ugandan court that, in its original form, made homosexual acts punishable by death. This paper
examines the roots and language of the law and the connection between its passage and American
evangelical efforts in Uganda, as well as the distorting influence of Scott Lively and a lawsuit
brought against him for human rights violations. Lively is an attorney, activist, and candidate for the
2014 Massachusetts governorship, as well as a published author (most notably of The Pink
Swastika, a thoroughly discredited history that argues that homosexuality was the root cause of the
Holocaust). He is the pastor and president of Abiding Truth Ministries, a church based in
Springfield, Massachusetts, and a former director of the

Persuasive Speech On Gay Rights In Uganda
Intro There has been an increase of gays all over the world in the last few generations. Some
countries have become accepting it, but others are not having any of it and Uganda, a country in
East Africa, is one of them. Uganda has passed serious laws for an anti– gay country. Some laws as
severe as life in prison or death sentence. Outline Firstly, I would like to inform you that I will be
talking a lot on LGBTQI: This means lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex
people, so actually every non–heterosexual. I will be talking about Uganda for its anti homosexual
laws and addressing the issue of LGBTQI in Africa. I watched a documentary released by BBC

Lord's Resistance Army
Over 1.8 million people in Northern Uganda have been displaced, in fear of attacks from the Lord's
Resistance Army, into internally displaced people's camps. This extremist group has been causing
havoc in Northern Uganda by ransacking villages, kidnapping children, and brutally killing innocent
people. Their violent acts are fueled by their radical religious beliefs. The notorious Joseph Kony
founded the Lord's Resistance Army, also know as LRA, in 1986, with the intentions of creating a
new government based on the Ten Commandments. Since 1986, he has created a powerful army of
almost 3,000 soldiers, most of them who are children. They specifically target the Acholi people, an
ethnic tribe located in Northern Uganda and some parts of Sudan. ... Show more content on

The group's effects on the region are prevalent and easily noticeable, but it is important to consider
the causes in order to really understand the issue. Uganda's unstable, harsh rulers, such as Idi Amin
and Milton Obote, have caused many ethnic groups, like the Acholi, serious pain and oppression.
Once this hatred toward the government is paired with radical Christian ideas, the LRA is going to
cause a lot of damage through heinous actions that effect a swarm of people. The Lord's Resistance
Army's power was infinite because did not face a lot of opposition within Uganda, and with outside
sources, such as Sudan supporting it, it was able to be self–sufficient. Today, Uganda continues to
face the harsh rebels, but since a viral internet campaign called "Kony 2012", the awareness for the
issue amongst the rest of the world increased dramatically. Even though the campaign itself ended
up being a flop, it raised concern and the Ugandan government made a huge push to combat the
issue. Although Kony has not been caught, it is estimated that he now only has several hundred
fighters, all of whom live in the bush and do not attack villages as often. There is still a lot of
progress to be made, especially with helping the families recover from their losses, but there has
been a large wave of aid organizations who have been working towards mending the wound in
Northern Uganda. In the history of the conflict, the world

Comparing and Contrasting Socio–political Ugandan Perspectives with USA
Uganda is the world's second most populous landlocked country after Ethiopia. The official
languages are Swahili and English. The population of about 36 million is growing at an annual rate
of 3.4 per cent. Uganda is one of the poorest nations in the world. In 2012, 37.8 percent of the
population lived on less than $1.25 a day. Uganda has a 85% literacy rate for males and 72% for

Under Idi Amin's presidency (1971–79), representative institutions were abolished altogether, and,
with the first of several military coups in 1985, the constitution was suspended. Ugandan President
Yoweri Museveni was re–elected to a third term after the Ugandan constitution was amended in
2005 to abolish presidential term limits. The opposition however, were not satisfied with the results
of February 2011 elections, condemning them as full of rigging. His presidency has been marred,
however, by invading and occupying the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the Second
Congo War, resulting in an estimated 5.4 million deaths since 1998. Museveni had allowed the
Rwandan Patriotic Front to use Uganda as a base during the 1990 offensive into Rwanda and
subsequent civil war. Given their historical ties, the Rwandan and Ugandan governments were
closely allied and thus Museveni worked closely with Kagame throughout the First Congo War.
Ugandan soldiers were present in Zaire throughout the conflict and Museveni likely helped Kagame
plan and direct the army. 'Uganda has a decentralized system of government, with provision for
regional governments for districts that may by consent of their respective local government councils
agree to join. Currently there are 163 districts in Uganda. Kampala City Council is administered by
the central government, and therefore does not part of the local government structures. In 2005
multiparty politics was introduced in the country after a lull of almost 20 years of single party rule,
commonly referred to as none party movement system. Uganda has a system of representation of

Essay on May Joseph and Mississippi Masala
May Joseph and Mississippi Masala
Today's world is characterized by a global environment of rootlessness. Political upheavals, poverty,
and opportunity cause populations to shift and move, and people that are citizens of one country to
move to another. The resulting disconnect between the traditions of their homeland that they have
internalized, experiencing these as "home," and the new environment that they move to where the
culture is vastly different calls into question what "home" really is, and what citizenship means.
In her book Nomadic Identities: The Performance of Citizenship, May Joseph explores the issues of
migrancy and displacement among modern peoples. She contends that citizenship "is not organic but

When Idi Amin's policies are forcing Asians to leave Uganda, Mina's father Jay asks his lifelong
native Ugandan friend Okelo, "Where should I go? Where should I go? This is my home" (Nair).
Okelo replies, "Not any more, Jay. Africa is for Africans–black Africans" (Nair). Although the pain
of being forced to leave Uganda so that its indigenous people can regain control of the economy is
massive for Jay, it is this remark by his closest friend that devastates him, because what it tells him
is that he does not belong in Uganda. He is not wanted, not accepted–not even by his best friend.
The ideological framework of nomadic citizenship that Joseph builds in her book serves as an
excellent framework from which to analyze Mississippi Masala. The issues that she raises in terms
of the Asians being forced to move out of Uganda, having to transport their citizenship culturally in
order to feel at home, and the multicultural merging of cultural identities among cultural nomads are
dealt with also in the film. Mississippi Masala also highlights how racism becomes a part of
nomadic citizenship.
Demetrius is a Southern black man in Mississippi during an era before blacks have attained a greater

The Non Citizen Asian Population Of Uganda
Imagine being given only 90 days to pick up your life and leave a place you call home. The Non–
Citizen Asian population of Uganda was given only three months, ninety days to be precise, to leave
the country. Later Asians who were Ugandan citizens were also expelled. Idi Amin's reasoning for
expelling 60,000 Asians from Uganda is still unclear. There are many theories put forth, but they
remain mere speculation. As a result of Idi Amin's erratic behavior, jingoism, and ruthlessness,
Uganda's economic ultimately suffered to this day from this act. In 1971, President Idi Amin
demanded a review of Uganda's Asian community citizenship. In August of 1972, he decreed that all
Punjab Asians residing in Uganda must leave. The deadline to leave ... Show more content on

Eventually, this resulted in the Asians dominating the entire economy in post–colonial Uganda;
ultimately creating tensions with the Africans. They had always been the target of resentment in
Uganda; once Amin came into power, he acted upon this tension. Many erratic announcements in
the span of a few days targeted various groups. The first proclaimed, "All Asians holding Indian,
Pakistan, and Bangladesh passports must leave." Few took this announcement seriously until Amin
signed the decreed. Many were astonished by this and did not want to believe it. This is because
when Amin came to power, he made the working conditions better and many of the Asians who
were in the business industry. Another announcement followed, adding, "All non–citizen Asians,
even those holding Kenyan, and Tanzanian passports must leave. Again, many could not believe
what was occurring. These announcements were life shattering, especially when it was apparent to
both the Africans and Asian that Amin was serious. Next, came an announcement exempting
professional Asians from explosion, this was received with trepidation. This last announcement
drove a wedge between the Professional and non–professional Asian communities. The
professionals opted to leave voluntarily. Yet another announcement proclaimed that no matter Asian
persuasion one claimed, he or she had to leave. All the back and forth announcements added to the

Persuasive Essay On Gay Rights
Under section 145 of the Ugandan penal code, which was implemented during British imperial rule,
any men who have sexual relations with other men can be punished by life in prison. In 2013, the
Anti–Homosexuality Bill was passed, which criminalized gay sex, same–sex marriage, sex while
one partner is HIV positive, sex with a minor, and "aiding" or "promoting" homosexuality. President
Museveni was initially reluctant to sign the bill, but he set up a team of scientists at the Ministry of
Health to study homosexuality and declared that he would make his decision based on their findings.
After the Ministry of Health announced that homosexuality was not a disease or an abnormality,
Museveni concluded that homosexuality was a choice and signed the bill. It was declared null and
void in August 2014 on a technicality, but the draft of a similar bill was leaked to the public recently.
According to a report published by Sexual Minorities Uganda, there have been 264 documented
cases of discrimination against the LGBTQ community since the bill came into full force, including
job loss, eviction, violence, sexual assault, denial of healthcare, torture by state, and family
banishment. The Ugandan government has not investigated any of these cases. The Ugandan
government is persecuting the LGBTQ community to gain political power and fight westernization,
and in response, some nations are supporting them while other nations and Ugandan LGBTQ rights
activists are condemning their actions.

Imperialism In Uganda
Uganda Throughout the continent of Africa, a majority of the territories experienced colonization.
Several nations, specifically Uganda, were placed under the rule of Great Britain. Uganda, an East
African country surrounded by the Great Lakes of Africa, was one of the last parts of the continent
to be reached by outsiders. Colonization in Uganda has brought many new customs and religion to
the land and people.
Prior to colonization, the land of Uganda was scarcely inhabited by humans. Between the 14th and
16th centuries, Nilotic speakers, a language originating around the Nile River, migrated south from
Sudan. Over the two hundred years, they had established dominance over the farmers who were
previously located on the land. The Nilotics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Ambition and the Downfall of Macbeth, Idi Amin, and,...
Ambition is a force that helps drive societies forward. When the power of a nation falls in the hands
of a single person ambition takes many spectacular and ugly forms. It can be both the making and
destruction of that person but regardless of the net effect, ambition will have deep socio–economic,
political, and cultural roots. Three dictators were taken by ambition and it pushed them into a costly,
long, battle to obtain and maintain power. Those leaders are Macbeth, Idi Amin, and, Napoleon
Bonaparte. Macbeth is the main character in Shakespeare's Macbeth. Macbeth was born into low
ranking nobility and rose to fame as a general. He did so well in the military that he became the

Life of Idi Amin Essay
Idi Amin was a soldier first and foremost. He imposed a scheduled and militaristic way of life on his
followers. His own military record paints the picture of his rise to power. During British
colonization of Uganda Idi Amin began his endeavor into the military. It was in 1946 that Amin
enlisted in the King's African Rifle's, KAR, the British army in colonized Africa. (Boddy–Evans)
Upon his entry he was placed as assistant cook, a far from glorious position. However he managed
to rise through the ranks. He became a Corporal in 1948 and was stationed in Burma, Somalia, and

remained in office from 1971–1979. (Boddy–Evans) Idi Amin's time in office was seen as the
bloodiest times in his countries history. Like most dictators he ruled with fear. His crimes against
humanity are well documented and anything that isn't is still spread through word of mouth. It was
these erratic actions that lead to the downfall of the Ugandan economy. (Idi Amin Killer File)
Obote, the man Amin helped into power prior to his own coup, had a positive effect on the economy.
Obote declared a strong national economy with little foreign dependence. Unlike Amin's
administration, these types of statements were not propaganda. In the years of Obote's financial
independence there was an 11% GDP growth in the economy. However Amin's administration left
the country at a negative 0.6% GDP. (Luganda)

Not only did Amin harm Uganda by killing a lot of its population, he also was the cause of an
almost complete economic collapse, when, in 1972, he declared an "economic war" on the Asian
population in Uganda. Uganda's economy relied heavily on its Asian population because they ran
most of the manufacturing and trade sectors as well as making up a large portion of the civil service.
Amin's order of expulsion for the Asian population gave them three months to exit Uganda. They
were given British passports and the businesses they left behind were turned over to Amin's
supporters. Amin not only decimated the population of Uganda during his despotic reign but caused
the economy to falter and fail as well. As his reign of terror went on, news of Amin's crimes and

Garrigan In Idi Amin
Haile Selassie Emperor of Ethiopia was famously quoted as saying "Throughout history, it has been
the inaction of those who could of acted; the indifference of those who should have known better;
the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to
triumph." This quote could relate no more so than in the novel The Last King Of Scotland with the
protagonist Nicholas Garrigan who continually takes no action against the atrocities he hears and
witness whilst he is Idi Amin's personal physician. We can view Garrigan in two different
perspectives one being that he is a good person who did nothing or the other being he is a good
person that did bad things.
The novel is a memoir of Nicholas Garrigan, a young scottish doctor who moves to uganda in 1971
seeking adventure. He begins work at a small hospital in Mbarara however he soons moves to
kampala to become Idi Amin's personal physician. Once there things begin to turn for the worst in
uganda, Idi Amin begins to persecute certain ethical and political groups. Things however soon
become even worse with mass executions, Garrigan struggles with ethical choices whether to use his
position to step in and take action or to keep himself safe. He once again faces a moral dilemma
when Stone the British foreign office representative asks Garrigan to assassinate Amin in return for
both money and help to leave the country.
We often perceive Garrigan to be a bad person due to his continuous selfish

General Idi Amin Dada And The Act Of Killing
In both documentaries, General Idi Amin Dada and The Act of Killing, the authors spent a
considerable amount of time with the perpetrators of mass murder. In The Act of Killing Joshua
Oppenheimer gets access to the executioners, gangsters and paramilitary leaders who carried out
millions of mass killings. In General Idi Amin, Barbet Schroeder spent time with the third Ugandan
President and one of the greatest mass murderers, Idi Amin Dada. Schroeder was able to document
his firsthand account of events. These documentaries demonstrate the kind of extraordinary access
the authors were given and their ability to document the unspeakably painful truth.
In both documentaries, the perpetrators seem to have the impression that they are in control of the
documentary. For instance, in The Act of Killing, the executioners set up every scene playing as
victim and perpetrators, and even going as far as hiring other locals to play as victims. They acted as
if they were the producers of the film by creating the conditions, like choosing costumes, applying
makeup, and setting up the villages to burn them down. Throughout the documentary, the
executioners directed the content and edited the scenes. Likewise, Anwar Congo, one of the most
brutal executioner, took the responsibility of sitting in the director 's chair. He exclaimed that it is
important to tell the story of the killings in a step by step process. This shows how the author is
skillfully suggesting to viewers that the film is

Charles Martin in Uganda: What to Do When a Manager Goes...
In several countries, we're seeing mere evidence of the emergence of sub cultural power and
influence. Why? Basic factors include immigration and the rise of religious fundamentalism.
Equally important seems to be the growing desire among ethnic groups for independence from the
groups that dominate the nations in which they find themselves. In recent years, for example, the
cultural identity is effective in mobilizing people in defense of national identity. Typically, such
effects promote the "national culture" by reinforcing language and religion, subsidizing nationalistic
programs and activities, and propagandizing against foreign influences in the national culture.

Thus to forestall adverse publicity and, more importantly, activity that could lead to costly work
stoppages, HG needed as many local allies as it could get. Getting (and keeping) them, was another
key facet of Martin's job. Martin, though still young by most standards, was well suited to the
Ugandan project. After high school, he entered the University of Wisconsin, where he became
fascinated with Africa through a course in its pre–colonial history. Graduating with a major in
African studies, he served with the Peace Corps in Kenya, where he worked with small business
start–ups and took side trips to Ethiopia and Tanzania. Although he loved working in Kenya, Martin
developed a disdain for the Western managers and workers who isolated themselves in expatriate
ghettos and congregated in the capitals first class hotels. His creed became "Don't draw attention to
yourself and, above all, learn and respect the culture." At the end of his Peace Corps stint, Martin
was determined to return to and work somewhere in Africa. After earning an M.B.A. at the
University of Maryland, he took a job with HG, where he worked for two years en project bidding
and budgeting. Both when he was hired and when HG became involved in the Ugandan project,
Martin made sure his superiors knew he wanted the African assignment.

A U.S. federal district judge has dismissed an LGBT case against a Christian pro–family advocate

Uganda's Anti-gay Laws Essay
There has been an increase of gays all over the world in the last few generations. Some countries
have become accepting to it, but others are not having any of it and Uganda, a country in East
Africa, is one of them. Uganda has passed severe laws for an anti–gay country. Some laws as severe
as life in prison or death sentence. The U.S. should step in and act as an International police force
before things get too out of hand because nobody should be put to death or spend lifetime in prison
for being who they are. Uganda began to see gay rights as a problem. Yoweri Museveni, the

Without the involvement of the American Evangelicals things maybe could've been different. Roger
Ross Williams said, "The Anti–Homosexuality Bill would never have come about without the
involvement of the American Fundamental Evangelicals" (Walker 30). Ever since the Anti–
Homosexuality Bill was on the agenda, Ugandan LGBT have been "living in constant fear of

He was beaten with a hammer and died because he was gay. He was also involved in a Rolling

believed there were two different ways to react to being gay. One way was to be as secretive about it
as possible. Or the other way was to be not ashamed of it. Kato was proud to be gay even though it
was risky, especially in the country of Uganda with all the new Anti–Homosexuality Bills. Kato

Kato had tried to push for gay rights he had been suffered beatings by police and people of Uganda

Idi Amin As A Leader That Abuse The Power
Throughout history there have been many leaders who abuse the power that has been bestowed upon
them. A person who abuses such power is considered a dictator, tyrant, despot, etc. These dictators
typically rule through fear, and don't usually win the hearts of many. They will do whatever it takes
to stay in power over the country that they rule. One such ruler is named Idi Amin. Idi was a ruler
who abused his power and saw himself as someone who was a man of influence.
Idi Amin was born on 1925 in Koboka, Uganda (History.com). He was raised with little to no
education, but quickly found his place in the world. He joined the King's African Rifles (KAR) and
quickly rose through the ranks.Milton Obote had become the first prime minister of Uganda in 1962.
He had forged an alliance with Amin, who helped expand the size of the Ugandan military. After a
few assassination attempts, Obote began to question Amin's loyalty and ordered his arrest. When the
leader of Uganda was away, Amin staged a coup and seized the government. Idi took the
government with blood, which isn't surprising due to his reputation (History.com).
Idi earned his reputation through the killing of about 500,000 people (History.com). He started off
by executing members of the Acholi and Lango tribes that had been loyal to Obote, and set up
agencies to eliminate anyone opposed to his regime. Within his rule he expelled Uganda's entire

A School for My Village by Twesigye Jackson Kaguri Essay
The book is expressing a concern to meet the needs of education in a country that lacks quality

The book had me sitting on the edge waiting to see if it was going to be a success or a failure. There

loved how Jackson helped whoever came before him just as he saw his brother tending to the

Essay about Primary Education in Uganda
Primary Education in Uganda – A Policy Analysis
Over the past five years, Uganda's education system has proved both effective and successful.
Although in the process of further development, it has nonetheless served as a model for many
developing African countries. The Ugandan government, with President Yoweri Museveni at its
forefront, has determined primary education to be one of the major channels toward poverty
eradication and as a vital resource for economic and social development. The Ugandan government
has made a national commitment to eradicate illiteracy and educate its citizens through the 1997
initiative, Universal Primary Education (UPE). All levels of government, the private sector, grass–

As a consequence, policy was adopted that would better Uganda's financial position, which led to an
emphasis of secondary and higher education in order to fill the demand for "high–level" manpower.
(Bell, p. 4) The emphasis soon changed as it was realized by the Commission of Education in
Uganda in 1965 that the content and structure of primary school education should also be geared
toward meeting the economic needs of the country. P. Beghin wrote in Recent Trends in Primary
Education Policy in Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, "primary education is no longer regarded as a mere
preparation to secondary and higher education. Primary school is, in the view of the Syllabus, a
terminal education for a part of the pupils, which at present is actually the majority of them." (1968,
pg. 6) From this time, documented Ugandan education policy on issues such as instructional
language, examinations, and scientific literacy was expanded and reformed to include primary
education.
During the political turmoil of the 1970s and 1980s when leadership changed hands, the education
system suffered, yet functionally operated by relying on local and regional–based administrators and
nation–wide standardization. (Upenn Sas) As the political situation settled in Uganda, education
became the new hot topic and was regarded as an issue of international development. President
Yoweri Museveni and the National Resistance Movement Government, initiated a review of
education policy and

Mogadishu, Somalia. They stayed in New York for half a year before relocating to Toronto, Canada,
where K'Naan's dad had settled. K'Naan became famous because of his song 'Waving Flag' that was

growing up in a poverty–stricken, war torn society still holding onto the hope of actually being free
from the threat of violence, burdens of poverty and the hurt of betrayal" (Cowie). This song was
written about the struggles faced by the Somali origin: poet, rapper, singer, songwriter and

both countries allowed him to compare two countries and emphasize the adversities of Somalia to a
first world nation. Specifically, the lyrics to one of his verse states, "So we struggling, fighting to eat
and we wondering, when we'll be free, so we patiently wait, for that fateful day, it's not far away, so
for now we say". This is well–written by K'Naan because not only does it summarize the major
difficulties that Somalia people face but also it gives him and the people a motivation to continue to

To What Extent Were The Social Policies Of The Idi Amin...
To what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to
Uganda's colonial past? This is the question that this essay endeavors to answer as it scrutinizes the
social policies issued by Idi Amin Dada's administration throughout his eight year long reign over
Uganda. This essay will analyze the events of Idi Amin's rule from 1971 to 1979 as a response to the
decade prior to Uganda's independence in 1962 and the interim period between them from 1962 to
1971. It is made apparent that Idi Amin's response to the issues within his society were by in large
fueled by the lingering distaste he had for the effects that British involvement in Ugandan affairs
had left on the nation. The British introduced ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These origins stemmed from the late 19th century to the early 20th century when the British first
began to colonize Uganda with the help of Asians but didn't intensify until the fifties when classism
and racism became a growing issue. These concerns would grow potentially destructive in the
sixties when Britain worked alongside Idi Amin to overthrow Milton Obote and then a reality in the
70's when these issues were addressed with severity. Links between Idi Amin's ruthless social
policies and Uganda's colonial past became apparently negative which posed the query, to what
extent were these social policies a detrimental response? The focus of this piece is to illustrate the
extent to which Idi Amin's social policies, issued in varying degree from 1971 to 1979, served as an
overwhelmingly detrimental and negative response to a time when Britain ceased greater control
and influence over Uganda. It is noteworthy because it provides an answer and origin to a nation
that endured a dictatorship with a lack of ethical and substantial social reform for nearly a decade.
Instead a subservient military overtook the Ugandan parliament in an attempt to force a self–
interested agenda upon its diverse population. The question to investigate then becomes, "to what
extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to Uganda's
colonial past?"

The Last King Of Scotland Essay
The Last King of Scotland is based on Ibi Amin, played by Forest Whitaker. Ibi Amin became
president of Uganda after performing a coup in 1971, and remained the country's dictator for the rest
of the decade. During his reign, up to half a million people are estimated to have been murdered by
his regime. The film does not focus deeply on the genocide that occurs during this time period, but
the representation of Ibi Amin being a cold–hearted dictator was evident throughout the film. The
film is dictation of the effects of colonialism and the post–colonial theory that took place in Uganda.
Colonialism has many effects on both the colonizer and those that are being colonized. The aspects
of colonialism from a colonizer perspective are that it is beneficial and useful. Colonizers believed
that coming to Uganda with modern medicine and new doctors was a benefit to the land. In many
cases it may have been but 80% of the Ugandan people did not use the doctors, and preferred the

Development has recently become a new buzz word in international relations. Through an
exploration of political, social and economic development around the globe, scholars are trying to
understand which policies are most beneficial, and why certain policies are effective and why some
fail. The connection between different types of development is often an important part of this
research as well. The connection between political and economic development is of specific interest

Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the
relationship between the two. The lack of political development in Uganda since independence from
Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability that
Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development.
To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to
examine the political atmosphere of independence. Under the colonial system, Uganda was a
protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of
forced labor and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence
in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political parties formed, the Uganda People's
Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the
UPC was nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY
was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people who were the most favored under
British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP
and increased the political power of Milton Obote.
At independence in 1962, Obote, of the UPC, was appointed Prime

Child Soldiers In Uganda
Child Soldiers in Uganda
Americans often take for granted the various liberties afforded to citizens of this country. In America
some believe they are oppressed, and while no society is perfect, the excellent conditions in this
country do not even compare to that of many other countries worldwide. Citizens of this wonderful
country will never fully understand how fortunate they are unless they change their perspective and
educate themselves about the realities of those in other countries, like Uganda for example. Children
in Uganda endure an extreme amount of physical and mental suffering every day. The use of child
soldiers in Uganda is one of the greatest examples of oppression of children to date; the actions that
have been taken by the Ugandan government, United Nations, European Union, and the United
States have done little to solve the issue, therefore government reforms and the defeat of LRA leader
Joseph Conley would be of benefit to Uganda and contribute to solving the issue of child soldiers in
their country.
The use of child soldiers in Uganda is a result of the war that began in 1986 between the Lord's
Resistance Army, a group of rebels, and the Ugandan government. First, the leader of the LRA
decided to utilize children to fight the war; "Kony used ever more brutal methods to avoid defeat by
Museveni's army. He kidnapped children to act as slaves and trained them to fight" (History: The

Uganda is in east–central Africa. Its capital is Kampala. The flag of Uganda is very different from
ours in America but the flag consists of six equal horizontal strips, black, yellow, red repeating from

Uganda. They even have a anthem which goes like this, "O Uganda! May God Uphold Thee". Some
important holidays in Uganda are New Year's Day, Labor Day, Independence Day, Christmas Day,

They also have dances in Uganda which are important parts to ceremonies and special occasions.
They have different people that make up different dances, so the creativity of the dances is great to
see in different traditions. The most popular, recognizable dance would be the Kiganda, where the
performers move only their lower bodies to the drum beat. The dance is a pretty trick dance but
many people catch on and turns it into whatever they would like to make it. The dance has many
different faces but the known one is performed for the Baganda King. The dances tie into the
religion of the people who live in Uganda. Over four–fifths of Ugandans are Christians, either
Protestant or Catholic. They are strong in their faith and traditional beliefs. Other than praying to
God, Christians and Muslims, people also consult a local oracle/healer. Around 10% are Muslims, a
legacy of the Arab traders who traveled to Uganda in the 19th century. Many Ugandans prayed and
praised if they need food or clothes.
Uganda is a presidential republic which means that whoever is president of Uganda is head of state
and head of government. The head of government (President) is HE Mr Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

The last source gathered was a short documentary titled, One of the Most Evil Men in History: Idi
Amin. The documentary was produced by Uden Associates in 2001, the documentary comes from a
series of documentaries about the most evil men in history, which gives the documentary more

a greater extent the documentary uses confronting pictures (Appendix 5), menacing music and a
number of negative adjectives to describe the brutality. Throughout the documentary, there are clips
from a variety of people who had their own personal experiences with Amin, such as one of Amin's

The Rights Of Gays And The Homosexual Agenda

  • 1. The Rights Of Gays And The Homosexual Agenda In March of 2009, at the Hotel Triangle in Kampala, Uganda, Scott Lively, an American attorney and activist and the president of Abiding Truth Ministries, a conservative Christian organization, delivered a speech that was to have a drastic effect on the human rights of gays and lesbians in Uganda. The speech, given at an anti–gay conference titled "Exposing the Truth behind Homosexuality and the Homosexual Agenda", linked homosexuality with child molestation and the destruction of African families and laid the foundation for what was to become a virulently homophobic movement in Uganda. This religious crusade against the rights of gays and lesbians culminated in an oppressive law, passed in 2014 and recently struck down on a technicality by a Ugandan court that, in its original form, made homosexual acts punishable by death. This paper examines the roots and language of the law and the connection between its passage and American evangelical efforts in Uganda, as well as the distorting influence of Scott Lively and a lawsuit brought against him for human rights violations. Lively is an attorney, activist, and candidate for the 2014 Massachusetts governorship, as well as a published author (most notably of The Pink Swastika, a thoroughly discredited history that argues that homosexuality was the root cause of the Holocaust). He is the pastor and president of Abiding Truth Ministries, a church based in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a former director of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Persuasive Speech On Gay Rights In Uganda Intro There has been an increase of gays all over the world in the last few generations. Some countries have become accepting it, but others are not having any of it and Uganda, a country in East Africa, is one of them. Uganda has passed serious laws for an anti– gay country. Some laws as severe as life in prison or death sentence. Outline Firstly, I would like to inform you that I will be talking a lot on LGBTQI: This means lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex people, so actually every non–heterosexual. I will be talking about Uganda for its anti homosexual laws and addressing the issue of LGBTQI in Africa. I watched a documentary released by BBC entitled " The world's Worst Place to be Gay". • 13. Lord's Resistance Army Over 1.8 million people in Northern Uganda have been displaced, in fear of attacks from the Lord's Resistance Army, into internally displaced people's camps. This extremist group has been causing havoc in Northern Uganda by ransacking villages, kidnapping children, and brutally killing innocent people. Their violent acts are fueled by their radical religious beliefs. The notorious Joseph Kony founded the Lord's Resistance Army, also know as LRA, in 1986, with the intentions of creating a new government based on the Ten Commandments. Since 1986, he has created a powerful army of almost 3,000 soldiers, most of them who are children. They specifically target the Acholi people, an ethnic tribe located in Northern Uganda and some parts of Sudan. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The group's effects on the region are prevalent and easily noticeable, but it is important to consider the causes in order to really understand the issue. Uganda's unstable, harsh rulers, such as Idi Amin and Milton Obote, have caused many ethnic groups, like the Acholi, serious pain and oppression. Once this hatred toward the government is paired with radical Christian ideas, the LRA is going to cause a lot of damage through heinous actions that effect a swarm of people. The Lord's Resistance Army's power was infinite because did not face a lot of opposition within Uganda, and with outside sources, such as Sudan supporting it, it was able to be self–sufficient. Today, Uganda continues to face the harsh rebels, but since a viral internet campaign called "Kony 2012", the awareness for the issue amongst the rest of the world increased dramatically. Even though the campaign itself ended up being a flop, it raised concern and the Ugandan government made a huge push to combat the issue. Although Kony has not been caught, it is estimated that he now only has several hundred fighters, all of whom live in the bush and do not attack villages as often. There is still a lot of progress to be made, especially with helping the families recover from their losses, but there has been a large wave of aid organizations who have been working towards mending the wound in Northern Uganda. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Under Idi Amin's presidency (1971–79), representative institutions were abolished altogether, and, with the first of several military coups in 1985, the constitution was suspended. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni was re–elected to a third term after the Ugandan constitution was amended in 2005 to abolish presidential term limits. The opposition however, were not satisfied with the results of February 2011 elections, condemning them as full of rigging. His presidency has been marred, however, by invading and occupying the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the Second Congo War, resulting in an estimated 5.4 million deaths since 1998. Museveni had allowed the Rwandan Patriotic Front to use Uganda as a base during the 1990 offensive into Rwanda and subsequent civil war. Given their historical ties, the Rwandan and Ugandan governments were closely allied and thus Museveni worked closely with Kagame throughout the First Congo War. Ugandan soldiers were present in Zaire throughout the conflict and Museveni likely helped Kagame plan and direct the army. 'Uganda has a decentralized system of government, with provision for regional governments for districts that may by consent of their respective local government councils agree to join. Currently there are 163 districts in Uganda. Kampala City Council is administered by the central government, and therefore does not part of the local government structures. In 2005 multiparty politics was introduced in the country after a lull of almost 20 years of single party rule, commonly referred to as none party movement system. • 21. Essay on May Joseph and Mississippi Masala May Joseph and Mississippi Masala Today's world is characterized by a global environment of rootlessness. Political upheavals, poverty, and opportunity cause populations to shift and move, and people that are citizens of one country to move to another. The resulting disconnect between the traditions of their homeland that they have internalized, experiencing these as "home," and the new environment that they move to where the culture is vastly different calls into question what "home" really is, and what citizenship means. In her book Nomadic Identities: The Performance of Citizenship, May Joseph explores the issues of migrancy and displacement among modern peoples. She contends that citizenship "is not organic but must be acquired ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Idi Amin's policies are forcing Asians to leave Uganda, Mina's father Jay asks his lifelong native Ugandan friend Okelo, "Where should I go? Where should I go? This is my home" (Nair). Okelo replies, "Not any more, Jay. Africa is for Africans–black Africans" (Nair). Although the pain of being forced to leave Uganda so that its indigenous people can regain control of the economy is massive for Jay, it is this remark by his closest friend that devastates him, because what it tells him is that he does not belong in Uganda. He is not wanted, not accepted–not even by his best friend. The ideological framework of nomadic citizenship that Joseph builds in her book serves as an excellent framework from which to analyze Mississippi Masala. The issues that she raises in terms of the Asians being forced to move out of Uganda, having to transport their citizenship culturally in order to feel at home, and the multicultural merging of cultural identities among cultural nomads are dealt with also in the film. Mississippi Masala also highlights how racism becomes a part of nomadic citizenship. Demetrius is a Southern black man in Mississippi during an era before blacks have attained a greater degree of respect and freedom. He knows what it is like to be oppressed because of his color. Although he has always lived in America, he–like the displaced Indian Ugandans in the film–is descended from a people that also originated long before in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. The Non Citizen Asian Population Of Uganda Imagine being given only 90 days to pick up your life and leave a place you call home. The Non– Citizen Asian population of Uganda was given only three months, ninety days to be precise, to leave the country. Later Asians who were Ugandan citizens were also expelled. Idi Amin's reasoning for expelling 60,000 Asians from Uganda is still unclear. There are many theories put forth, but they remain mere speculation. As a result of Idi Amin's erratic behavior, jingoism, and ruthlessness, Uganda's economic ultimately suffered to this day from this act. In 1971, President Idi Amin demanded a review of Uganda's Asian community citizenship. In August of 1972, he decreed that all Punjab Asians residing in Uganda must leave. The deadline to leave ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Eventually, this resulted in the Asians dominating the entire economy in post–colonial Uganda; ultimately creating tensions with the Africans. They had always been the target of resentment in Uganda; once Amin came into power, he acted upon this tension. Many erratic announcements in the span of a few days targeted various groups. The first proclaimed, "All Asians holding Indian, Pakistan, and Bangladesh passports must leave." Few took this announcement seriously until Amin signed the decreed. Many were astonished by this and did not want to believe it. This is because when Amin came to power, he made the working conditions better and many of the Asians who were in the business industry. Another announcement followed, adding, "All non–citizen Asians, even those holding Kenyan, and Tanzanian passports must leave. Again, many could not believe what was occurring. These announcements were life shattering, especially when it was apparent to both the Africans and Asian that Amin was serious. • 29. Persuasive Essay On Gay Rights Under section 145 of the Ugandan penal code, which was implemented during British imperial rule, any men who have sexual relations with other men can be punished by life in prison. In 2013, the Anti–Homosexuality Bill was passed, which criminalized gay sex, same–sex marriage, sex while one partner is HIV positive, sex with a minor, and "aiding" or "promoting" homosexuality. President Museveni was initially reluctant to sign the bill, but he set up a team of scientists at the Ministry of Health to study homosexuality and declared that he would make his decision based on their findings. After the Ministry of Health announced that homosexuality was not a disease or an abnormality, Museveni concluded that homosexuality was a choice and signed the bill. It was declared null and void in August 2014 on a technicality, but the draft of a similar bill was leaked to the public recently. According to a report published by Sexual Minorities Uganda, there have been 264 documented cases of discrimination against the LGBTQ community since the bill came into full force, including job loss, eviction, violence, sexual assault, denial of healthcare, torture by state, and family banishment. The Ugandan government has not investigated any of these cases. The Ugandan government is persecuting the LGBTQ community to gain political power and fight westernization, and in response, some nations are supporting them while other nations and Ugandan LGBTQ rights activists are condemning their actions. ... General Idi Amin Dada And The Act Of Killing In both documentaries, General Idi Amin Dada and The Act of Killing, the authors spent a considerable amount of time with the perpetrators of mass murder. In General Idi Amin, Barbet Schroeder spent time with the third Ugandan President and one of the greatest mass murderers, Idi Amin Dada. Schroeder was able to document his firsthand account of events. These documentaries demonstrate the kind of extraordinary access the authors were given and their ability to document the unspeakably painful truth. In both documentaries, the perpetrators seem to have the impression that they are in control of the documentary. For instance, in The Act of Killing, the executioners set up every scene playing as victim and perpetrators, and even going as far as hiring other locals to play as victims. They acted as if they were the producers of the film by creating the conditions, like choosing costumes, applying makeup, and setting up the villages to burn them down. Basic factors include immigration and the rise of religious fundamentalism. Equally important seems to be the growing desire among ethnic groups for independence from the groups that dominate the nations in which they find themselves. In recent years, for example, the cultural identity is effective in mobilizing people in defense of national identity. His mother was a hard working person who took good care of her children. His father was a hardworking man who demanded a lot of his kids. Although in the process of further development, it has nonetheless served as a model for many developing African countries. The Ugandan government, with President Yoweri Museveni at its forefront, has determined primary education to be one of the major channels toward poverty eradication and as a vital resource for economic and social development. The Ugandan government has made a national commitment to eradicate illiteracy and educate its citizens through the 1997 initiative, Universal Primary Education (UPE). As a consequence, policy was adopted that would better Uganda's financial position, which led to an emphasis of secondary and higher education in order to fill the demand for "high–level" manpower. (Bell, p. 4) The emphasis soon changed as it was realized by the Commission of Education in Uganda in 1965 that the content and structure of primary school education should also be geared toward meeting the economic needs of the country. P. Beghin wrote in Recent Trends in Primary Education Policy in Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, "primary education is no longer regarded as a mere preparation to secondary and higher education. Primary school is, in the view of the Syllabus, a terminal education for a part of the pupils, which at present is actually the majority of them." (1968, pg. 6) From this time, documented Ugandan education policy on issues such as instructional language, examinations, and scientific literacy was expanded and reformed to include primary education. During the political turmoil of the 1970s and 1980s when leadership changed hands, the education system suffered, yet functionally operated by relying on local and regional–based administrators and nation–wide standardization. (Upenn Sas) As the political situation settled in Uganda, education became the new hot topic and was regarded as an issue of international development. At the age of 13 K'Naan and his mother and two siblings moved to the United States from Mogadishu, Somalia. They stayed in New York for half a year before relocating to Toronto, Canada, where K'Naan's dad had settled. K'Naan became famous because of his song 'Waving Flag' that was released in 2009. "'Just like a Waving Flag", in its original form, is a song about young children growing up in a poverty–stricken, war torn society still holding onto the hope of actually being free from the threat of violence, burdens of poverty and the hurt of betrayal" (Cowie). Specifically, the lyrics to one of his verse states, "So we struggling, fighting to eat and we wondering, when we'll be free, so we patiently wait, for that fateful day, it's not far away, so for now we say". The actions of Yoweri Museveni have had a vast negative effect on Uganda and its neighboring nations. Countless numbers of Ugandans have already suffered under Museveni's leadership. By the 1980's Museveni's government began to directly affect the population by being unable to fund some of the basic utilities that are a necessity to the people of Uganda such as roads, railways, and power plants. This is the question that this essay endeavors to answer as it scrutinizes the social policies issued by Idi Amin Dada's administration throughout his eight year long reign over Uganda. This essay will analyze the events of Idi Amin's rule from 1971 to 1979 as a response to the decade prior to Uganda's independence in 1962 and the interim period between them from 1962 to 1971. It is made apparent that Idi Amin's response to the issues within his society were by in large fueled by the lingering distaste he had for the effects that British involvement in Ugandan affairs had left on the nation. These origins stemmed from the late 19th century to the early 20th century when the British first began to colonize Uganda with the help of Asians but didn't intensify until the fifties when classism and racism became a growing issue. These concerns would grow potentially destructive in the sixties when Britain worked alongside Idi Amin to overthrow Milton Obote and then a reality in the 70's when these issues were addressed with severity. Links between Idi Amin's ruthless social policies and Uganda's colonial past became apparently negative which posed the query, to what extent were these social policies a detrimental response? The focus of this piece is to illustrate the extent to which Idi Amin's social policies, issued in varying degree from 1971 to 1979, served as an overwhelmingly detrimental and negative response to a time when Britain ceased greater control and influence over Uganda. It is noteworthy because it provides an answer and origin to a nation that endured a dictatorship with a lack of ethical and substantial social reform for nearly a decade. Instead a subservient military overtook the Ugandan parliament in an attempt to force a self– interested agenda upon its diverse population. The question to investigate then becomes, "to what extent were the social policies of the Idi Amin administration a detrimental response to Uganda's colonial past?" Ibi Amin became president of Uganda after performing a coup in 1971, and remained the country's dictator for the rest of the decade. The aspects of colonialism from a colonizer perspective are that it is beneficial and useful. Colonizers believed that coming to Uganda with modern medicine and new doctors was a benefit to the land. In many cases it may have been but 80% of the Ugandan people did not use the doctors, and preferred the witch doctor. Political and economic development in Uganda based on these terms provides a strong case for the relationship between the two. The lack of political development in Uganda since independence from Britain in 1962 has hindered economic development and it was not until recent political stability that Uganda has been able to experience any sort of economic development. To understand the political development in Uganda, it is important to start shortly before 1962 to examine the political atmosphere of independence. Under the colonial system, Uganda was a protectorate, meaning that land rights of Africans were respected, despite the commonplace of forced labor and high taxes. In 1961 Uganda was granted self–rule before gaining full independence in 1962. With the granting of self–rule, three major political parties formed, the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Kabaka Yekka (KY). The main platform of the UPC was nationalist and the party strived to unite all Ugandans despite ethnic differences. The KY was mainly an ethnic party consisting of the Baganda people who were the most favored under British rule. An alliance between the UPC and KY gave them more collective strength than the DP and increased the political power of Milton Obote. In America some believe they are oppressed, and while no society is perfect, the excellent conditions in this country do not even compare to that of many other countries worldwide. Citizens of this wonderful country will never fully understand how fortunate they are unless they change their perspective and educate themselves about the realities of those in other countries, like Uganda for example. Children in Uganda endure an extreme amount of physical and mental suffering every day. The use of child soldiers in Uganda is one of the greatest examples of oppression of children to date; the actions that have been taken by the Ugandan government, United Nations, European Union, and the United States have done little to solve the issue, therefore government reforms and the defeat of LRA leader Joseph Conley would be of benefit to Uganda and contribute to solving the issue of child soldiers in their country. The use of child soldiers in Uganda is a result of the war that began in 1986 between the Lord's Resistance Army, a group of rebels, and the Ugandan government.
