Thanks to Jess Manocchio, I’ve been re-invited to speak at PRSA Buffalo, kicking off their Sunrise Seminar series on social media.
While my previous talk in February focused on listening in social media (Part 1 & Part 2), this time I’ll be bringing folks on a journey through how social media strategies are created. Along the way, I’ll recommend the use of conversation filtering and analysis tools such as cotweet and JamiQ.
I’ll update this post after the talk. Meanwhile, you should be able to follow along 8am EST today (Aug 5th) via twitter #PRSAtalk.

Conflict can be constructive.
Testing ideas by challenging them with alternatives is a useful process. But it can be uncomfortable and confronting for many people.
This session will outline the types of conflict we encounter in open source communities, and explore some techniques for using conflict as a positive force for moving issues forward and avoiding stagnation.
Learning to understand the nature of conflict itself and the ways different people respond to conflict is an important step toward building a strong, inclusive community. We’ve seen patterns emerge, it’s time to address them in a more systematic and constructive way. Can we harness the underlying passion that drives people to disagree into a force for positive action?
Let’s discuss how we can build a culture of respect to embrace the positive aspects of conflict and work together better.
From SBMU in September ’08. One hour presentation on the basics of Social Media. What it is, how it works and the most popular social media outlets for companies to get involved in. Heavy emphasis on using social media for listening and conversation rather than for direct channel marketing.

We value consensus. This is one of the Drupal community's great strengths. However, when consensus can't be reached, valuable time and energy is wasted. Contributions are left to languish forgotten in an issue queue.

Submit questions to Angie using note cards.Raise your cards and she will collect them. You can ask questions at ANY POINT throughout this workshop. We will pause at specific points to address any verbal questions. We won’t be able to answer all questions. We will send you all these resources afterwards along with others. We will potentially answer your questions at a later date. Also, follow Angela on Twitter.
So what’s the point?Acknowledge where audience is coming from…
While this is exciting, we want to acknowledge that with any new technology or way of communicating, there are some inherent tensions that we need to consider:CollaborationSharingConversationVs.Information overloadInformation integrityPrivacyHow does this impact our lives as people of faith? How can we use social media mindfully? These are important questions to live into.Live in the tension. Learn as you go. Be willing to make mistakes, apologize and move on. Twitter does, so you should, too. Plus if you do, you can always make it a positive. Also, be willing to turn it off for a while. Take a retreat. Step away from the Twitter.
So, what’s the point of social media for Bread?Well, of course, iwe are using every tool at our disposal in our work of ending hunger. We recognize that social media is another way for people to relate to each other around issues they care about. So, we want to learn with you.Ultimately, Bread’s social media work is about influencing our elected leaders to change laws and structures to alleviate hunger. That’s our focus. As more and more members of Congress join FB and Twitter, it becomes increasingly important that we learn how to relate to them in this space. This workshop isn’t about those skills per se, but we can go into that if you like.
Ok, at this point, some of you may be feeling overwhelmed: What is Facebook? What is Twitter?1-2 question cards.
Clare “By making important stuff highly accessible to people who are likely to pay attention and do something with it (works both ways).”Jennifer “I feel better connected with cousins throughout the country that I would otherwise have no contact with at all.”Laura, “remembering people's birthdays”Elizabeth, “ It helps me know when a friend might be having a hard time and appreciate a phone call or email. Ex: Worst day ever!!!!!I also second the perk of seeing people's passions through the links they post, especially people I don't know as well or whose personalities have changed a lot since I first met them. I don't know that it makes me a better friend, but it exposes me to more provacative ideas than I would find on my own.”One friend told me she tries to stay off Facebook, because according to her“ I usually read through an unrealistic spread of emotions/events. So I go on this emotional rollercoaster and don't respond to anybody because I either don't know what to say or I feel like the responsibility for me to be a friend is dispersed across 500 people and I no longer need to respond.” And she is a therapist for soldiers returning from war at the VA in California. So the tensions are real. But the possibilities are real too. Invite Sarah up to share her story with us. Sarah is an America Corps Vista Volunteer from North Carolina.
