THE
RESURRECTION
Luke 24:1-7 Now on the first day of the week,
very early in the morning, they, and certain other
women with them, came to the tomb bringing the
spices which they had prepared. 2 But they
found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3 Then they went in and did not find the body of
the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were
greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two
men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then,
as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the
earth, they said to them, "Why do you seek the
living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is
risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He
was still in Galilee, 7 saying, 'The Son of Man
must be delivered into the hands of sinful men,
and be crucified, and the third day rise again.' “
THE RESURRECTION
A.The birth, life, death and resurrection
of Jesus are the four most important
things which have ever happened in
history.
B.These events are at the core of
Christianity.
C.The resurrection of Jesus is the great
hope of Christianity.
I. A Prevarication
A.1 Corinthians 15:12 Now if Christ is
preached that He has been raised from
the dead, how do some among you say
that there is no resurrection of the
dead?
B.Paul to Agrippa - Acts 26:8 Why
should it be thought incredible by you
that God raises the dead?
II. A Plethora
A.1 Corinthians 15:3-8 For I delivered to you first of
all that which I also received: that Christ died for
our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He
was buried, and that He rose again the third day
according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was
seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. 6 After that He
was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of
whom the greater part remain to the present, but
some have fallen asleep. 7 After that He was seen
by James, then by all the apostles. 8 Then last of
all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of
due time.
B.Acts 10:40-41 Him God raised up on the third day,
and showed Him openly, 41 not to all the people,
but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us
who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the
dead.
III. A Proof
A. Acts 1:1-3 The former account I made, O
Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to
do and teach, 2 until the day in which He was
taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had
given commandments to the apostles whom
He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented
Himself alive after His suffering by many
infallible proofs, being seen by them during
forty days and speaking of the things
pertaining to the kingdom of God.
B. Acts 13:30-31 But God raised Him from the
dead. 31 He was seen for many days by those
who came up with Him from Galilee to
Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the
people.
IV. A Purpose
A.Romans 4:25 who was delivered up
because of our offenses, and was
raised because of our justification.
B.1 Corinthians 15:16-17 For if the dead
do not rise, then Christ is not risen.
17 And if Christ is not risen, your faith
is futile; you are still in your sins!
V. A Plea
A. Colossians 3:1-3 If then you were raised with
Christ, seek those things which are above,
where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of
God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on
things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your
life is hidden with Christ in God.
B. Romans 8:5-6 For those who live according
to the flesh set their minds on the things of
the flesh, but those who live according to the
Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be
carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually
minded is life and peace.
VI. A Pattern
A.Romans 6:4 Therefore we were buried
with Him through baptism into death, that
just as Christ was raised from the dead by
the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life.
B.2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is
in Christ, he is a new creation; old things
have passed away; behold, all things have
become new.
VII. A Power
A. Ephesians 1:18-20 the eyes of your
understanding being enlightened; that you
may know what is the hope of His calling,
what are the riches of the glory of His
inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the
exceeding greatness of His power toward us
who believe, according to the working of His
mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ
when He raised Him from the dead and
seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly
places,
B. Ephesians 3:20 Now to Him who is able to
do exceedingly abundantly above all that we
ask or think, according to the power that
works in us,
VIII. A Promise
A.1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we believe
that Jesus died and rose again, even
so God will bring with Him those who
sleep in Jesus.
B.1 Corinthians 15:20 But now Christ is
risen from the dead, and has become
the firstfruits of those who have fallen
asleep.
IX. A Pledge
A.John 14:19 "A little while longer and
the world will see Me no more, but you
will see Me. Because I live, you will live
also.
B.John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, "I am
the resurrection and the life. He who
believes in Me, though he may die, he
shall live. 26 And whoever lives and
believes in Me shall never die. Do you
believe this?”
YOUR RESURRECTION?
A. Does Jesus’ resurrection give you
great hope?
B. It only gives hope to those who have
believed in Him, repented of their sins,
confessed Him as Lord and been
baptized into Him for the remission of
their sins.
C. What about you?
