The female reproductive system produces eggs and secretes hormones to prepare the uterus for pregnancy. It includes ovaries that release eggs, fallopian tubes that catch eggs and transport them to the uterus, and a uterus with an endometrial lining that can receive a fertilized egg. If fertilization occurs, the fertilized egg implants in the uterus and develops into an embryo and later fetus, receiving nourishment from the mother via the placenta until birth through the vagina.
